I have to look that one up. Richter scale measures up magnitude ("mag"). there are other, more subjective, scales out there, but richter is good enough to measure up how destructive an earthquake is.
quick (and scary) trivia, richter scale is logarithmic, meaning that the energy curve steepness only gets bigger and bigger, since each level is about 10x stronger than the previous.
oh and richer scale is open, it doesn't have a theoretical ceiling.

Yeah. the difference between a 3 and a 4 isn't much, but the difference between 4 and 5 is frightening ! Why do bikers wear leather ??-á Because chiffon wrinkles too easily.-á -- Paul Lynde |

Actually, its not the energy that is 10 times bigger, it makes the ground move 10 times more as you go from 4 to 5, however the energy is actually 32 times greater, because the actual equation is:
Log(E) = 4.8 * 1.5 * M
Where E = Energy, and M = Magnitude on the Richter scale
10^1.5 = 32

Why did it sink in the first place ? And at which moment in time did it sink ?
I can only assume that it either sank due to the weight of the water, or underlying material got soaked away. (but how ? how dense was the underground ?) |

it moved because the plate shifted, and it was actually a 20m displacement in some places.

Your house is not on a subduction zone :)
Most of the movement where you are is left to right, not up and down.

The waves definitely not feel "left and righ".
I could determine the general direction they where coming from, and it felt like moving up and down in short bursts... /^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_/^\_ (sine wave)
Btw, i was 28km from the epicenter. |

Yes, thats because the Rayleigh and Love waves move in that direction, but, the actual fault movement does not have to be.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Wave
Those are the surface waves which do the damage during an earthquake, the better known P and S waves are not the primary cause of damage. |

Also, the reason it felt much bigger than the other quakes you get in your area is because it was a very shallow quake (around 13km) and fairly close to where everyone lives.
well, in the end it doesn't matter. all that matters is, anything 6 and above is bad. anything 8 and above is pretty much a way of [insert your divinity of choice here] say "**** this place in particular."

by the way... my desk could support the house, I'm pretty sure.
someone's comment about a lack of warning made me consider where I'd put myself if it seemed like things would get really bad...
this desk is so heavy, we've been unable to move it.

It did, a little, as with all major earthquakes:
