Most of us if not all use "wine" to run eve on Linux. The distribution really does not matter, it should run equally well on almost all of them.
If you are new to wine, I suggest you try PlayOnLinux as it does all the work for you. PlayOnLinux is basically a graphical user interface to install and manage wine applications. It also has install scripts which do all the work for you when installing a game. This should be in your Ubuntu repository so you can simply install it from your software center. If not you may find some more information on how to install it on their website:
http://www.playonlinux.com
Current problems are: - "Walking in station" is broken, make sure you don't step out of your pod - Sign-in with the launcher seams to be broken for some of the people (patching should work), however there may be a patch for that. I just start the exe directly, like many others do, even on windows
There may be additional problems if you use anything else than nvidia. ATI for example was pretty horrible for some time, from what i hear that changed a lot and may be no issue at all, but i'm not sure.
There are some sources you may find useful when trying to run eve on linux with wine: https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Install_EVE_on_Linux_with_Wine (not sure if up2date) http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=25823 |

The biggest problem with Ubuntu in particular is the outdated version of Wine that comes in the default repos. Get the latest.
I've had nothing but bad experiences running 3D applications on a VM. |

xubuntu works fine, just follow the Ubuntu 12.04 guide.
BTW, Xfce rules, it's what I use. |
