Burdens the video card further while playing EVE. First, I never see any difference if playing from youtube or not. Second, play the EVE tracks from your folder instead then. Nope. They are in a ridiculous format that has to be converted first. Utter nonsense. Search for the youtube-to-mp3 converter. Besides the shady name it's a legit and usefull tool. I used the whole series of youtube-to tools once. |

you should use the music from the soundcloud page if you want that. or if you don't like the current track playing, there is a "hack" around it - go to the menu, turn the music volume to zero and up again - and a new track magically appears. I'm sorry to tell you this, but your so called adaptive music is crappy technology and needs an overhaul. Of course, no need to believe me... and you won't.
I might be the only one who has enough of all the depressing music when docked or moving around and i might be the only one who wants music that keeps me in mood while i move, when i move.
If you want to learn how to do it right, write a soft synth and implement procedural music creation. I'm sure the demoscene has made significant advances in this regards, so I will leave it as an exercise for you to figure things out yourself.
Yes, this is a very arrogant post. Your so called adaptive music is a joke, dare i say it's a lie you are telling yourself.
Syndicate back in 93 had actual adaptive music. You don't.
I'd appreciate if you didn't unintentionally insult my coding history.
Thanks.

That's some twisting of words and most indeed !! The survey asked if the Jukebox was used, not if people wanted it removed.
I was going to point out the same thing - wanting a feature removed and not utlizing it are two very different things. But CCP misrepresenting the truth is about par for the course by now.
As for the music, as I recall it's great, but I haven't listened to it since shortly after the jukebox was removed.
There's a survey for you: how many players keep the music volume at 0? (In CCP speak, this would mean they want the music removed) |

Interesting that you mention that, because I don't recall such a poll, and certainly would had answered "keep it" -if just because I've always played with the sound on. Sounds like you asked the "multiclient, sound off" wether they would like to invest in a new music player. Amazingly, they said "no".
Next time try and ask the people actually listening to EVE music and sound effects, could you?
The current musical experience of EVE is utterly boring. Listening to the same 5-6 tracks forever is unexciting to the point that i no longer notice wether music plays or not, it's just become background noise. Some weeks ago, I spent half an hour without music and noticed only when I entered a mission... and that felt like a real low.
I am a extremely aural person. I can't conceive playing games without music, have a extremely good musical memory, and last time i checked I could identify over 15,000 musical pieces after listening to a fragment. I *always* know wether I heard something before or don't, even if I can't identify it. Extrapolating from the tracks I can identify vs the ones I just remember, likely there's like 40 or 50,000 musical pieces stored in my memory.
And CCP totally made my EVE aural experience miserable by removing the abbility to shuffle music in game, and replace it with "elevator music" for each system -the same music forever as i usually will spend several weeks in a same system. To the point that i no longer listen to it, it's become just background noise -and I hate that.
But then someone polled the multi-client dudes who kid about "EVE has sound?, haw-haw" and they said they were OK to not be able to play EVE music within EVE. And here we are.
(And no, external sources don't cut it -I run missions, so listening to their music is a part of the EVE experience... go figure yourself how clunky would be to try and keep the music flow synchronized by alt-tabbing applications and switching EVE music on and off...) The Greater Fool Bar is now open for business, 24/7. Come and have drinks and fun somewhere between RL and New Eden! |

p.s. If you wan't to skip a song, you can enter the settings window (ESC key in the client), lower the volume of the music to 0, and then back up you will get a new random track. Perhaps we should add a skip button somewhere if it is needed. YOU ARE THE BEST PERSON EVER!!!!

As much as I like some of the EVE music I haven't turned it on in forever. Music isn't particularly needed or suited to space environs. Particularly music that has an overt melody or drums. Some of the EVE tracks would be better suited in CQ or stations than in space. It sounds like I have the radio turned on in my Rifter or something. I'd rather listen to the murmurings of the universe. Something that creates an atmosphere and mood but isn't a "song". Sparse soundscapes like this would allow for things like stargate hums to become a part of the "music". I used to like to perch on a wormhole and listen to its mumblings when I lived in W-space.
I'd like to see more ambient and nebulous soundscapes like the new nullsec and WH tracks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdJr8A9Kr1I http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6l8wy7Bjs8
I also like the Minmatar and Amarr race-selection music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GB14cZz_G9o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzJerBTjr-k
It would be nice to have the empires distinguished not only by background nebulae but by soundscape as well.
I still like Gallentean Refuge a lot as well. Its a bit more spacy than tracks like Below the Asteroids but still cheery for hisec. And the warbly guitar sound is awesome: https://soundcloud.com/ccpgames/eve-online-gallentean-refuge |

The music is great as always, but gets way way monotonous, way too early.
I liked being able to manually skip around the tracks.
I just always thought it was the strangest thing to remove the jukebox, of all things.

I DISAGREE WITH YOU WHOLEHEARTEDLY
Jon's music is what got me into EVE in the first place. The music is amazing - it seems to CAPTURE the environment of space, the vibrancy and happenings of New Eden so well!
Keep in mind, the music is less about reflecting on the environment of New Eden, but rather the life in New Eden. The optimism, mystery, victory, or fear of pilots is embodied in his music.

Agree with you mostly, but I still want music tracks. Though most should be ambient sounds as you said. And yes, EVE is a dark game and should not have cheerfulness in it-¦s soundtrack. I do like the audio soundtrack like it is without the jukebox, however if there were a "station" mechanic sort of like GTA or Fallout 3 that lets us switch ship audio to one of several "radio stations". This could allow for another mechanic - location-based radio, that notifies you of a unique pirate broadcast in the area, or a broadcast that is only in that part of the solar system or even region-based. Minmitar-related, etc.
This could allow for CCP including broadcasts like EVE Radio or Mad Ani's broadcasts too. |

adaptive music would be like that from homeworld or dune II, that changed based on what was happening, if you were building up, attacking, defending, losing or winning the music would change, that is truly adaptive music, what we have right now, at least for me in null, is just a depressing hum all day long. |

One of my favourite "mission running" tracks is "Retribution". It triggers on some acceleration gate activations, has a slow build up of about 15 seconds, then starts into the heavy guitar & drums. This is about the time it takes to activate the gate and drop into the next pocket.
Of course if all I heard was "Retribution" it would quickly become annoying :)
As for controls, it would be nice to have a shortcut key for pausing the music or turning the music off.

On the topic of procedural/context aware music: I've said it before, and I'm going to say it again: You guys should REALLY look into doing what LucasArts did with their iMUSE technology, ages ago. Nintendo also did something similar in The Wind Waker as well. It allows for hybridizing procedural/context aware music with traditionally composed music, among other things.
On the topic of people turning off the music: I think one of the main complaints about the music in EVE is that it's too monotonous - I think that's not because the tracks themselves are monotonous, but because the soundtrack is, due to it basically always being the same genre: Dark ambient.
Sometimes fast paced, sometimes slower paced, but it's always dark ambient nonetheless. And that's fitting for a space game. But it's not the only thing fitting for a space game, and innovating there would be a good thing. You've already previously vaguely defined the various musical styles of the civilizations (Amarr station sounds, anyone?), perhaps you should expand on this.
Imagine what kind of music you would hear if EVE had WiS and you were walking around a Gallente station. Are you imagining that? Good. Now skip the WiS crap, and move the music design you'd use there right into EVE.

Speaking of sound, I am finding I am missing the chanting in the background of Amarr stations. Can we bring that back? And maybe have announcements from time to time from Empress Jamyl for example encouraging the faithful.
And have similar personality for the other races? Quafe ads for the Gallente, or for revitaliizing tourism in the beautiful Algintal Constellation.. State propaganda in the State.. "Support the State by buying official Made In The State merchandise today."
Sounds that remind of Matar in the Matari stations.. birds, flutes, drums, water.. (Gallente are also known for the environmentalism and love of nature as well.)
Just a few things off the top of my head in terms of station soundscapes. |
