EDIT: generally speaking that is. Not all PVP fits include tackle, and some PVE fits use webs to better apply damage
Those are two specific examples, but the differences can be greater than that. The only way to answer this question generally is that a PVP fit is designed to fight players and counter tactics typically employed by players, whereas a PVE fit is desgined to maximize efficiency against NPCs. |

Note how the PvE fit is tanked specifically for Guristas rats with kinetic and thermal hardeners. It can tank around 500dps of mixed kinetic/thermal damage and has 118k EHP vs those damage types. But vs EM damage, it can only tank 180 and has just under 40k EHP. A PvE fit will frequently be cap stable. Even though this fit is not, it still gets 3'15" even with MWD running, which is enough for belt ratting and moving around to the next target. A Purifier stealth bomber would be able to solo this fit, especially when supported by rats.
PvP fit sacrifices some tank for tackle. But it has a very flat resist profile and sports 63-73k EHP vs every damage type I have loaded in EFT. A hallmark of shield tanked pvp fits is the EM hardener used to plug the resist hole. T2 Warp Disruptor and meta 4 webber are pretty much mandatory. This can definitely kill a bomber of any race if the pilot is able to keep the bomber inside of point range. Free Ripley Weaver! |

PvP ships are generally geared towards...
- having enough of a tank to survive unknown and often multiple types of damage over a short period of time (burst and buffer tanking is preferred). - locking down or inhibiting the escape of a target (stasis webifiers, warp disruptors/scramblers, etc) and/or - dealing as much damage as possible in a short period of time (either high volley strike or high damage per second) - being mobile (to get in range of targets or safety) - resisting, avoiding, countering, and/or killing Ewar as quickly as possible.
What PvP fits mainly suffer from is a lack of endurance due to the fact that they draw as much performance as possible in as short of time as possible. They are generally "capacitor inefficient."
PvE ships are generally min/maxed towards...
- absorbing large, [more or less] specific, and predictable amounts of damage over a long period of time (which means that active tanking and some form of capacitor stability is vastly preferred) - dealing a consistent rate of damage over a large amount of time (range is king)
All other considerations are usually secondary (mobility, locking down targets, etc) which makes PvE ships very vulnerable to more tactically flexible PvP ships.
I will also add that PvP ships CAN perform PvE activities, but are generally less efficient than PvE ships. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Lies, don't listen to them. There's no difference in fits. If you can run L4 missions in it, you can and should PVP in it. Stuck In Here With Me:-á http://sihwm.blogspot.com.au/ |

What Mr. Chrysoprase probably means to say is that he feels that any ship should be prepared to engage in PVP at all times, given that there is no area of the entire EVE universe where you cannot be attacked. It's possible to put together a mission ship that's capable of withstanding ganks, but you sacrifice PVE efficiency.
(I'm assuming that's the intent, because the only other interpretation is that Mr. Chrysoprase is looking for cheap kills, and that would simply be ungentlemanly.) In PVP you try to outlive all the things done to you like ECM, Cap Neuting, Unexpectable incoming dmg type... and after all that you finally put remaining resources on DPS. And since you die at a relatively high % you probably end up fitting affordable mods.
In PVE you already know what youll face and you can optimize your fit against that certain NPC. This primarily gives you the change to 'put everything on DPS' to hasten your harvest. Its very very easy to save all your PVE fits against specific NPC and just dock-and-refit from Fitting Browser and youll always have close to optimal fit in any encounter with NPC.
However, with help from Logistics and Warfare Links you may fit PVP against PVE no problem. In addition to almost never needing to refit youll never need any expensive ships/mods eiher.
Whats being overshadowed in the sample fits within our general community is Fleet Fits. If you fit solo youll always be short of resources, while ofc it may be creative and alot of fun. But with dedicated fleet fits with distinct roles youll end up with ships fitted much different from sample solo fits. |
