Hi , i am really confused in choosing my career path. I am mostly interested in WH & missions and occasionally wanted to do Faction wars.
I have some 1.7m SP. i was reading some forums where they complained that Drone boats are no longer viable and Drone boats are not able to solo even lvl 4 missions. is that true ??
i am really confused which one to choose. 1. HAC (Tech 2) 2. AF (tech 2) 3. Drone boats --> carriers 4. or level tech 1 ships like BC/BS.
Can you please help ?
Thanks, -Bala. |

People whine a lot.
What changed recently is that mission NPCs have gotten an AI update and NPCs will now switch targets and occasionally target drones. So, you have to actually watch your drones and recall them when they get attacked. It means more micromanagement and you can no longer go get a coffee while your drone do the mission for you.
But drone boats are still more than capable of doing missions.
Nothing changed for WH, Sleepers had always been targeting drones. And nothing changed for PvP.
For lvl 4 missions, I'd suggest a HAC or a T1 BS (including drone ships).
Carriers would be a bit overkill and anyway can only be used in low & null. You can use them, but why risk such an expensive ship? I've heard that AFs can do lvl 4s, but they are far from efficient (lack of gank). |

Regarding if Drone boats are useless now.
Do you want to....
A. Play AFK. Accept mission, warp to it. Deploy drones and go do something else. Come back in 30 minutes and hand in mission.
OR
B. Play EVE. Accept mission, warp to it. Deploy drones and play the game, keeping an eye on aggro and pull back drones if needed etc.
If A => Yes, Drone boats are useless. CCP why did you nerf my risk free, AFK money making.
If B => No, you're totally fine. Go out and kill stuff with your drones. Want to have some chat in game? Need help to get into the game as a new player? Just join my channel: Crazy Dutch Guy |

You have a ways to go. If anything Drone Boats are more viable than ever in both PVE and PvP as well as WHs. I would recommend that if that is the way you want to go, train into T2 drones FIRST. |

In fact it depends which drones you use : if you use mobile drones, as they will indeed be more often targeted, and as they need time to travel back to your bay if you call them back, you risk more than before to lose some, that's true. But if you use sentries and stay just next to them, the recall is immediat, or you can use remote repair, and they rock ! Sentries mean a big bay (125m-¦), a big bandwith (125mb/s) and the right bonuses. So concretly there are not so many ships for that : - the Dominix (T1 battleship) - the Ishtar (T2 cruiser) - the Gila (pirate cruiser) These 3 ships are perfectly able to run lvl 4 missions. |

Just to point that there is life outside of candy land we call high sec, you have some neat anoms in Nul that drones work very well.
1- warp in at distance 2- deploy sentries 3- :fap: to your favorite anime 4- Deploy salvage drones 5- ???? 7- Proffit |

should still be fine ...
Drone Navigation Computers may help with survivability ... The other alternative is Sentries + MJD in a BS
The DNC should make Heavy Drones fast enough to avoid much of the incoming damage they can get whilst in the process of recalling.
This is purely theory atm ... haven't actually tested it, and people aren't commenting in the Ships & Modules forum |

Training drones to V is super-useful. That'll let me get ECM drones and really screw with people.
Sure they can be countered, but that's true of anything. |

Remote repair Dominix (drone boat) are used heavily in upper class wormholes to run sites in groups. If you have any interest in joining a wormhole corp you can't really go wrong with drones. (Even if you aren't flying a pure "drone boat" a months worth of drone skills will benefit you greatly in most other ships anyway). www.ensignyooch.wordpress.com |

Drone ships are still very viable in all the areas you listed, and in fact some of them got significant buffs recently. You just have to use the right drones on the right ship at the right time.
Bala Subramanian wrote: i am really confused which one to choose. 1. HAC (Tech 2) 2. AF (tech 2) 3. Drone boats --> carriers 4. or level tech 1 ships like BC/BS.
All of them!
The progression I recommend is:
- Tristan / Algos -- T1 drone frigate and destroyer. Cheap, disposable, effective. Fly them a lot, and die a lot in them.
- Ishkur -- Great drone-based T2 assault frigate. Bit pricier, but still good for learning the ropes.
- Vexor -- Hardy drone cruiser. Around the same total price as Ishkur when fully fit, but uses bigger drones, and is slower.
- (Vexor alternative:) Arbitrator -- Amarr drone cruiser. Flimsier than the Vexor, but gets tracking disruption bonuses, and more drones (albeit smaller ones).
- Myrmidon -- Even hardier drone battlecruiser.
- (Myrmidon alternative:) Prophecy -- Amarr drone battlecruiser. Very, very tanky, but very slow as well. Works very well when sitting on an enemy's face and using energy neutralizers in addition to drones.
- Dominix -- The ultimate T1 drone ship. Slow battleship with amazing drone bonuses.
- (Dominix alternative:) Armageddon -- Amarr drone battleship. Slightly poorer drone bonuses, but it receives a range bonus to energy neutralizers instead, allowing it to nuke targets' capacitor from 30+ km away.
- Ishtar -- T2 heavy assault cruiser. A Vexor with the drone capabilities of a Dominix. Very specialized.
- Carrier, etc
This progression is powered by the "don't fly what you can't afford to lose" philosophy, in addition to "learn by doing".
Some extra tips:
- It's not just the damage of the drones that matters. Consider their speed, range, tracking, and tank as well. For example, even if you get "bigger numbers", do not use heavy drones from 50 km away. You'll just lose them when they get shot and you can't pull them back to safety fast enough.
- T2 drones are a huge improvement over T1 ones. Get them ASAP.
- Drone Interfacing is a magical skill that increases drone damage by 20% per level. Train it to IV or V ASAP if you're intent on sticking with drones.
- Don't neglect other weapon systems. Some ships, like the Ishkur, also benefit a lot from using hybrid weapons in combination with their drones. Others, like the Amarr drone boats, benefit from energy neutralizers. Just because your ships don't strictly need their high slots for damage doesn't mean they should ignore high slot modules.
Good luck!
Disclaimer: Most of my experience is in PvP; there may be a better progression for PvE, especially since some of the choices (e.g. Armageddon) don't make very much sense against NPCs. We recently won a PVP fight thanks to drones. Our target was skirting around our disruption ranges, so we dropped a single tackle on it and swamped it with drones, haha! It died before getting out of disruption range because we had so much drone DPS applied. |

Just FYI - yes your Amarr ships do have some solid drone boat offerings too. You don't need to cross-train to Gallente but it will add value for other things if you do. |
