I had been looking at the dev thoughts about Mining.
Today mining is a specialization to get good yield and earn enough Isk. With the new module (deployable tractoring device)
This creates new ways for mining to operate, current situation is that ore goes into the hold of the mining vessel. What I suggest is that when the ore hold is full, bits and pieces of the asteroid breaks off (similar to containers) which are lootable. The deployable loot collector should also collect these automatically.
The same effect should be produced when an asteroid is being shot at.this post has nice suggestions for pvp twists regarding asteroids.
An important factor however would be that the bits of asteroid that floats around should have a very limited life-span, before it breaks down into dust or is drawn back to an asteroid or in clusters form a new asteroid. So you need to collect them within 15 minutes.
For balancing ofc, shooting an asteroid should yield less ore as a portion of the ore is destroyed. The ration can be 60:1 between damage and how ore the asteroid loses, but the ratio of how much you can scoop up compared to how much is destroyed is 70% destroyed, 30% can get scooped. While a new skill [Asteroid Raider] both increases damage against asteroids by 5% and increases yield by 5%, to a maximum of 55% yield.
This would cause, Super Carriers, Dreads and Titans to be efficient miners because of their high damage output. This would in turn lead to much more interesting combat situations. Not to mention how you explain losing a Titan while mining Veldspar in lowsec.
Protection services of mining fleets could join in and yield ore, while not gimping their fit completely. However they would for example 600 dps (with 25% damage bonus), yield a maximum of 330 m3 ore per minute (55% of 600). The chunk broken off should be based on the damage received during a 60 second period. All kinds of damage should apply, except bombs and smartbombs, which only destroys ore and yields nothing.
Using weapons on overheat increases damage against asteroids 100 times, but also increases destruction rate to 99% leaving only minor debris to be collected. This is a SLIGHT increase of normal shooting, but at the expense of the total amount that you could possible extract, so this would mainly be used to destroy asteroids that you have no desire to mine, or as a tactic used by roamers to group miners into a certain area of the asteroid cluster by destroying good ore in other parts.
Besides a Hulk that can pull 1 436 a minute easy, it still places the dedicated miningships on top to prevent breaking the game. - since 2003, bitches |
