Just got one of these - and I'm wondering peoples views on this issue. So far I've been eqipped with 5 720s and 3 assault launchers. But it just seems that the period where enemies are in optimal range of my howies is rather short, then they're close and the guns are useless - yes theres the missiles but I'd prefer to take advantage of its focus as a gun boat. Long or short range? Autos or arties? I havent even tried it in pvp yet - I understand its not the best ship for that kind of encounter but I'd still prefer to maximise my chances! What does everyone think?

Npcing, long range. Art cannons can dish out quite a punch. PVP, Close range with nos's in the launcher spots and a sheild tank.

I personally Prefer Long Range- 5 720's and 3 Heavy Launchers, with tanking instead of ganking. Depending on how you fix your setup, you can fit an AB and take advantage of the range. If you're doing level 2 missions, fit a webber instead of the AB. Personally I dont use either for level 3's.
5 720's, 3 Heavy Launchers 2 Active Hardeners Therm+Kin, Booster II, Pair of Shield Amps 2 RCU's, Co-Processor, Damage Control
(Still messing with it- may fit 2 passive hardeners instead of the amps, and fit a gyrostabalizer in the place of the co-processor)

Thanks lofty29, yeah I'm liking my arties, but I'm having difficulty keeping at range. Once they close the guns resemble parsley in effective violence. I have a decent AB but often its not enough, should i fit a mwd to enable me to keep at a good distance?

Can you help us out here and tell what missions/npc's you are fighting? Level 2 and 3 setups will be totally different.

Well at present I'm npcing 0.3 angels, and my 5 720s and 3 assaults are fine for that, apart from the aforementioned brevity of ideal gun use - it seems all the rats have mwds now, so I cant keep at range. Apart from that annoyance there are also a few player pirates around - seen one in a brutix - another in some kind of inty, and one in a tempest. Havent had to face any of them yet and I know there's not one setup for every situation, I'd just like, as i said, to maximise my chances :)

In that case- you'll be fine with my level 3 Setup. Avoid Player pirates, you will get podkilled. IMO, you should do missions- safer, more money, LP and rewards.

I always use autocannons. ------------- Please fix the EW stacking bug, it's a disgrace!

Always go autocannons for NPCs. If you want range get a Ferox.
Right now Im using this set up. It gets me through any lvl 3 mission with no warp outs.
5 220s 3 heavies
2 Hardeners 1 T2 medium shield booster 1 AB 1 webber
2 T2 PDS 2 T2 Tracking Enchancers.
5 drones
Wherever you went - here you are.

What do you do about those NPC cruiser types and Strain-series drones that have MWD speed and longer range (17km or more) artillery/rail/missile weapons?
They can run faster than you, all while keeping out of the range of your drones/webber/AC's.
I know that the 3 heavies you have fitted can reach... but the DPS isn't enough to break the tank of 80k+ cruiser rats and several drone types.
I'd really love to use AC's in my Cyc as well, but for the above reaons i've elected to stay with 720's for now.

Well I can easily run every 3 mission I have tried with it.(all of them except some of the new one that give big faction hits.)
I havent met anything yet with better range than my drones though(all skills at 3 or 4.)
Between the drones and the heavies you can take out any special ships. Although if I was running a pure drone mission I might swap the heavies for assults, just to speed things up.)
Wherever you went - here you are.

The setup i use on my cyclone is this: High: 5 720s (mix of galliums and prototypes) 2 heavy missles tractor beam
Med: AB II large shield booster II 3 named shield hardners
Low: 3 PDS (named) gyro II
4 medium drones
I use this for NPCing and ratting in 0.0. Since this is my best ship, I don't pvp with it as I wouldn't want to lose it. I find that it is better to have better shield resists than it is to have more shield/boosting. With the AB I find that I can keep most frig or small size drones away long enough to pop them before they get to me. The ones that use MWDs get chewed up by my drones. The system I rat in is a -.39 system, and I can handle tanking everything there, except when there are EM dealing rats, I leave those alone.
IMO the tractor beam is the best module in the game :) Totally worth a high slot for me. I can loot stuff while I am fighting, and since the RMR changes, the loot adds up to a lot of reprocessed minerals.
CPU is definately an issue. I have engineering at 5, electronics at 5, weapon upgrades at 5 and energy grid upgrades at 3 to allow me to fit all this stuff. Definately spend the money on the named gear as it always has lower CPU requirements.
Any way, my 2 isk. Have fun
