I've read a bunch about wormholes, but perhaps you can help with just the first entry level advice.
Been in one a few years ago with another toon, and got killed by a dude and his alt, haven't gone back. I have a few alts lying around and would like to add the WH life to their existence.
Alt One "Orca/Salvager/Miner (Can I use Orca as a base instead of a Tower?) Alt Two "Cruise Missile Mission Runner" (450 DPS average, Shield tanks well)
Can these two find a home in Wormhole life, when I log them in, and safe log out,,, all is good until I log back in.
If so, what type of WH should I be looking for them to play in, or perhaps find a WH corp to join instead?
Thanks. |

Go for a corp. You can live solo out of an orca but its really not the best, If you arent paying attention then while the orca is sitting in space they could get probed down. A good prober can combat scan you in about 20-30 seconds. So one mistake could end in tears. You can live solo out of a tower but again its not the best, join a corp then at least the burden of running a tower, hole security etc is shared
As for the type of hole you are looking for if you cant fly a T3 then a c2 with c2 static is the best bet. If you can then anything with a c3 or higher static brings in a lot of money. C3s are the only ones easily soloable though. Above that you rely on other people to effectively run sites,. |

A good combat scanner will get an orca in a single scan, so you'd have about a 10 second window to see their probes. If you want to live out of an orca, I'd advise against using a Raven as your DPS ship, because you can't store it in the Orca and use your Noctis.
If you want to live truly nomadic, get a small tower with 70 hours of fuel and 12 hours of strontium (so 700 fuel blocks, 120? stront). Anchor the tower wherever you want to do sites, so your orca can sit safely inside it decloaked. When you're ready to Noctis, launch your Noctis from the Orca, and switch ships. You can always scoop your Noctis to the Ship Maintenance Bay later. This way you're using a relatively cheap and disposable system of protecting yourself. The stront prevents somebody from immediately torching the tower, the fuel gives you enough time to do a couple days of ops if you want. You will be vulnerable to bubble traps around your tower, so be cautious of that, but it's a fairly cost effective way to get into sites if you don't want to dive directly from high-sec (which can be more dangerous). This method also allows your combat toon to fly whatever it damn well pleases because it can just hide behind the shields while you salvage.

That is some GREAT Advice all the way around...
The scanning skills on the Orca alt character are modest and being skilled now. I suck at the whole scanning thing even with the easy button changes recently.
I honestly don't know the Wormhole dynamics enough to be a resident without some experience just looking around, trying to get in and out without dying or being a Castaway lost forever in space time.
I'll take the advice on a portable small tower with shield when my alt gets skilled enough.
Thanks all.
For the time being, they are HS nomads doing empire missions from station to station.

Dunno about you guys but I can scan down an orca with probes only visible for 7 seconds. Pro Tip: Probes in warp don't show up on dscan... |

Okay, let me provide some constructive advice assuming you're intent on going it solo.
If (and that's me taking into consideration the information provided) i was limited to what you had i'd use the following. 1 Orca with a small tower in it (set it up to keep your orca safe when not in use) make sure you stront it. 2 Unfortunately, cruise missiles aren't really optimal in c1 - c3 WHs due to the small size/speed of the sleepers, heavy missiles are much better suited (if you're using a missile toon) 3 Make sure you have a scanning boat in the SMA of that orca or a toon that can scan well with it
But, from my experience the majority of fun in WH space has been in a quality corporation/alliance.
Anyways, hope this helps.

Like most other people, would recommend joining up with a corp. Gives you more safety and lets you have fun with some other people. If you join a corp in a C2 -> H2/C3, you can do both solo and group PvE, as well as getting some experience with PvP when you inevitably get dropped. If you're interested, shoot me a message in game. |

and for the love of god don't assume someone 'owns' the hole when you see them on grid. . and most certainly don't open conversation with them asking to move into 'their' hole. . . because you'll end up at least 400mil poorer. while i end up 400mill richer.
I think this is the most important 'moving into a wormhole plan' of all.

Uh huh, sure you will.
As others have said, solo wormhole life isn't really the way to go. You'll probably end up losing your ships and be worse off than where you started.

In my opinion:
1- Look for a C3, avoid Highsec static, because people will get in and farm your anoms. Null statics are quiet, lowsec are balanced, C2-C3 normaly have kspace statics. I would recomend C3-C2 because it will be quiet and you static will provide some content and plenty kspace conections.
2- Set up a Pos, if its small you may get attacked, specially if it has no defense. You may take your risk or get a medium/large. Most people wont bother with a ecm fitted dickstar. The fact that you can leave your ship there while you probe on other ship makes a huge diference.
3- Get a Tengu and do anoms on the C3. Signatures on C2 if its your static. You can do them on other ships, but tengu is optimal.
4- You will get plenty isk, so use faction/officer modules on everything.

Solo WHing is tough but do able. Most everyone here nailed all the important stuff to consider.
I would like to add to the join a corp/alliance though. I ran a C2 by myself and was quickly burned out by all the scanning everyday. There is a large number of small corps/alliances out there you could join. Not only does it make wh life a little less "lonely" but having shared wh activities seems to take the work out of living out here.
As with others we're always looking for good people however we live in a C5-C5 which can definitely seem intimidating for newcomers.
Do keep in mind that WH security and being able to give good fights is essential for the lifestyle. |
