So I just lost 2 hulks on my main in less than 2 hours.
Not trying to whine here but trying to deal with it.
My question is, If my hulk gets initiated by a suicide ganker, can I swap a swip frm a nearby orca to save the hulk? |

Yes you can... although it isn't an instant switch so be quick about it. |

But houston we have a problem, The ship going into the orca can not have anything in its ore bay and I believe no slavage in its cargo bay either. Not sure on all the restriction for the cargo bay. I believe only ammo and mining crystals are allowed to be in the cargo bay. So considering your already racing against the clock well you know... |

If you are being repeatedly targeted by suicide gankers, then my recommendation would be to switch to skiffs/procurers. Stick an adaptive invulnerability in a midslot and a damage control in a low slot. There is enough cap to run them continuously. If you are obsessed about losing yield, then feel free to lose some more hulks. |

A good tank is a necessity if for no other reason than to reduce the likelihood of the scanning vessel to choose you as the gankers next target. It might be possible to the Orca thing but there are better options to try.
1) I think you can get about 22 or 23k EHP on a Hulk including bonuses from the Orca 'Shield Harmonizing' link. You need high resistances on the kinetic & thermal. 2) Check the location/s you mine in on killboards. It may be they are very popular with scumbags, I mean gankers, and therefore you would be wise to relocate. Some systems are never worth mining in as we all know. 3) Collect local intel via killboards and local channel. Gankers generally frequent the same systems. If you are trying to mine in one of those systems It's not worth the bother. |

also who ganked you? http://www.minerbumping.com/p/the-code.html these people are the biggest high sec gankers but will happily help you instead of kill you if you follow their very sensible code of conduct and pay a nominal fee for keeping mineral prices high by killing of the bots and afk miners that are competing with you. |

How can I possibly mine all the time and NOT be ganked in over 2 1/2 years ?
Never be AFK. Ever.
Keep an eye on Local.
When a gank goes down, it's so obvious that it's about to happen, you pretty much deserve it if you are that oblivious to what's going on around you. What's the purpose of playing this game if one is not actually playing this game ?

Just some advice. My one gank was due to the reasons above and not learning that I was mining right next door to a low sec pirate corp.
If you lost two hulks that quick, you are in a tough system and the Hulk may not be the best option for mining there. Keep in mind that the Hulk is the holy grail for gankers. It is easy to kill and gives a nice high isk killmail. Sure it has the highest yield, but if you are using it in higher risk systems, that extra yield is meaningless if have to keep buying new Hulks. |

In my experience of over 4.5 years of mining in same Hulk, hisec gankers are not especially hard to avoid.
Rule #1: don't be AFK!
When you warp into a belt and see miner wrecks or CONCORD, expect trouble and consider changing systems.
When you see that other miner park nearby, assume he is a warp-in point and move away. It also helps to have an Orca nearby and refit a ship scanner to see if the miner is really a miner.
Watch local. If it has criminals and suspects, you should consider docking and / or finding another system. Also watch the discussion. Gankers tend to be boastful, and some even issue a warning before they attack. CONCORD spam is also something to watch for, as is changes in local count, spikes or even slower growth.
I use a rule of thumb: no more people in local than there are belts. This is quite easy to do outside Caldari space, especially in Amarr space. [Hence I grew-up in Amarr space.]
Lastly use d-scan. If you see a fleet of catalysts / thrashers / talwar / algos / brutix / etc. at max range, be safe and GTFO. Set your d-scan to filter on overview, so you don't see: structures, wrecks, drones, containers. Typically I set the range to 2 au (~300,000,000 km), less if there is a nearby station / gate / etc.
If you are mining in a deadspace, and you see combat probes within 4 au, this is also a good GTFO moment. |

^ This. I have been mining off and on (hey, what can I say, I find it cathartic after the high risk high stress I deal with at work) for several years, and have I think only lost 3 or 4 ships total (one was an Osprey, a demented part of me misses mining in that first little ship) mainly because of what he says right here.
If you are Solo, DO NOT mine in a Hulk unless you are willing to Dscan spam, watch local closely, or are in a mining group (which usually have armed coverage). It is just worth too much for such a soft target. Most solo or duo pilots can take it out too easily. Stick with a Mackinaw in high sec (too much firepower / investment needed to gank it, so no profit in it. No one really bothers unless it is just a joy-kill, and they don't mind losing the money).
In Null, Low, or Wormholes sec, Skiff, or mining frig (depending on what you are out there for), usually with dual Stabalizers, is the way I go, although I don't venture out there often for mining.

I have not been afk mining just semi. Now, I made every pilot that is a frequent in the system normal standings. Any new guys come in I check their killboards to see if they have a history of suicide ganking.

Some excellent points here.
Also, dotlan can be a great tool as it can show you ship/pods kills over the last 48 hours. This can be useful in picking the right system to mine in.
I've only ever had one attempt on my miner alt by suicide gankers (ironically, they didnGÇÖt fit T2 so i ended up with a nice killmail) because I dont mine in busy systems, I stick to out of the way quiet 0.5 systems and can mine happily without seeing another sole for hours. Sure it means a little more work in hauling my goods to market but given that its safer, I'm good with that trade off.
If you are afk mining, I would strongly recommend that you do it in a retriever. They are so cheap that they are less likely to be ganked to begin with, but even if you are the cost to replace them is negligible.

... join a corp that does regular Ops, daily even, as many corps do, and get some fleet boosts.
Again, depends how obsessed you are with yield / cycle but at the very least more "eyes on Local" is worth a little bit of yield.
Better luck in the future.

Learn to spot and avoid gankers, avoid the locations they normally frequent, move when they show up and learn to better compensate for your losses. Procurers and Skiffs are generally left alone but can be considerably lower yield. If you get ganked less than every 12 hours of play however, consider this approach: http://indecisivenoob.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/alternative-approach-yield-tank.html
I run this approach, and have not to this date been ganked thanks to gank avoidance (2 systems set up with identical gear so I can easily swap one to the other), but if I were to be ganked, I could be back out with a new set of gear and confident that I'm still up on yield compared to the alternatives. |

You cannot switch ships from a ship maintenance bay while you are targeted. Best to just keep an eye on local and look up players entering system. |

If you can trim down the potential cost of replacing clones, fly cheap fit T1 Barges. If not, fly moderately tanked Skiffs.
Most importantly, do not carelessly taunt gankers. If you're not confident in carefully crafting a good response after getting ganked, a simple "gg" will suffice. |

^ This is the best advice you will get. Fly retrievers or skiffs. Everything else really doesn't belong. I would also debate the usefulness of skiffs in comparison to what retrievers bring to the table. |

See my "Appalling mining vessel fittings....." OP in the 'Crime & Punishment' section for sound advice on fitting your mining vessels. To be honest it's not rocket science and people should be able to do it themselves but I'm tired of seeing really pathetic ship fittings.
Other rules and advice you should be following:
1) Don't be AFK. I realise those annoying New Order people have this as their mantra but seriously don't do it!
2) Don't use autopilot when flying in your pod or your ship. It's just not worth it and certain characters I will not mention have made a career of ganking autopiloting ships & especially pods with expensive implants.
3) Don't talk in 'local' channel while mining. 'Local' channel is really only for looking at and not speaking in. Possible exceptions to this rule are for trading purposes but in 'local' that isn't very effective so best not do that either.
4) Location. Don't mine in heavily ganked systems. Use in-game systems and/or killboards such as EVE Kill to determine this. Don't mine where the New Order operations are concentrated. Having said that the New Order do seem to be dispersing of late but I think they are still somewhat concentrated in certain space areas.
Not really connected to the OP but don't fill an untanked Caldari rookie ship with forty-six PLEX and take it for a ride. Someone actually did this recently and paid the price |

I've never lost a hulk or had anyone even try to gank me in highsec. You just have to be smart is all.
Scout your systems, don't hang out near high traffic areas. More targets = more opportunity for gankers. Ie. Perimeter is not a good mining system.
Use your standings - find out the ganker alliances and set them to red or orange. Then just watch local.
Pay attention to who and what warps into your belt. Most times gankers or bumpers will scout you out first uncloaked. Again, use standings.
