An eve hosted website that allows people to crowdsource for key feature in eve. You donate real money towards a specific goal and when that goal is reached feature is put into design / production with a turn around time of a few month. These designs would be in addition to any bi yearly expansions already planned. CCP would pick the avaialbe features to keep with game balance but the rest would be up to the players to decide.
Examples could be modular poses, custom colored ships, new ships, etc.
Does anybody have opinions on the subject? How much money would you be willing to put towards a specific feature and which features? |

While getting crowdsource funding for specific projects sounds great, I worry about what players believe are "appropriate scopes" for a project.
For example, you mentioned modular POS's, and think a 2-3 month implementation goal is reasonable... Are you on crack?
Some things are very reasonable implemented within a short time frame, but many aspects of this game simply aren't. As such, any ideas to be funded via this manner need to come from CCP dev's that have an honest and thorough understanding of the time-frame and demands involved, and not by aloof F&I posters.

Why should I pay more than I already do when there are ftp games and single player games out there that still receive updates and patches for no other reason than good will and publicity? Alright then.
Explain how, exactly, CCP could be expected to build an entirely new POS system from the ground up, deal with the old one, the transfer of everything etc in the space of three months.
Explain how CCP would deal with a bunch of highsec carebears paying to have nullsec removed, or vice versa?
Does anyone have a clue how long it takes to design a ship, have the art, models, bonuses and balancing, along with methods of acquisition, ready to go?
We're players. We are not game designers. We have biased views, we have no idea how long things take. Letting us decide what happens is a great way to kill the game stone dead.

Crowd sourcing funds doesn't work this way.
The way it is supposed to work is; "hey guys! I have an idea! It's _________!! Sadly, in order to realize this idea, I need funds so I can quit my day job and still pay my bills. Oh, and the equipment I need is specialty stuff and is expensive!!! FUND ME!!!
The way you are approaching it is; "hey! I like this idea! But the DEVs are not workng on it! So I'm going to throw money at them in addition to my monthly subscription in the hopes that they will drop other projects and work on this idea."
You see where the problem is? If not, there is little hope for you. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

I agree.. modular POS's in 2-3 months may be a lofty goal.. or maybe not with a large team with a solid pool of resources dedicated to just this feature, in either case i was only using it as an example.
CCP would have to really designate the potential goals and consider them for game balance issues as well as put a price tag on the item.
Crowdsourcing usually works when someone pledges money and then provides a means of payment.. then if the $ goal is reached the funds are taken from the accounts.
As it stands now.. CCP subscriptions and GTCs go into CCPs wallet to pay rent or advertising for dust , walking in stations, world of darkness, etc. To be fair we don't know what CCP does with their money and i'm not asking that we do for a variety of reasons. What i am suggesting is a way where players can get what they want without having to wait for dev staff to come available from working on a project that they want. So if we want cowboy hats for space avatars and i have $20 and their are another thousand people like me .. I can get some people at CCP to hire someone to make it for me. |

For little features (like cowboy hats) that might be a possibility. Most of the projects people really want though are firmly interwoven with other large aspects of the game (POS's for example).
To rework POS's (which would certainly be a popular vote) involves a tremendous number of other game mechanics, requiring a huge commitment of time and resources to achieve. Most of the Dev would have to cooperate to one degree or another to get that implemented, which goes beyond the scope of "additional features we'd like to see".
So little things, possibly, but that list would need to be put together by the developers.
You might consider that the idea of AURUM is pretty much what you are proposing in another form, and that got a rather negative reaction. You pay your money to buy AURUM and send it on those sorts of little cosmetic things... the AURUM purchases funded more work to be done on those types of projects. The NEX store even had the innate advantage of being able to purchase the AURUM with ingame ISK if you preferred instead... and it still got stonewalled by the player base.
I personally don't have a problem with paying a little extra for specialty items that don't directly affect game play, but many view it as an affront in a game where you already pay a base subscription. I can only imagine the response they would have to donating money for additional game mechanics or features. To carve a successful niche for yourself in EVE you need to be able to out sell, out produce, out fight,-á out run, or out wit your competitors. If you can do none of the above, your only option is to complain on the forums that somehow you are at a disadvantage using the exact same tool set-áas the rest of the player base. |

Thought that POS's were already modular. Since they use, you know, modules, that can be mixed and matched. |

While i agree with you mostly. PoS have been bad for ages, they really should have been improved by now.

PoS have been bad for ages, they really should have been improved by now. Rumor has it that they are being worked on (along with most of the back-end code). It might work if CCP compiles a list of features that they have already decided to work toward but that for whatever reason are constantly stuck on the backburner, then players could donate money toward the feature. The money could sit in a fund queued for the feature, along with CCP's latest estimate for its cost. When they feel they have enough to warrant putting it in, they cash into the feature and put full effort into implementing it. If a player puts money in and later changes their mind or decides it's taking too long, they can withdraw the money. If CCP decides not to implement one after all, they can refund everyone who donated. Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. Train Wing Commander. Considering I pay an extra 30 dollars per month for features I want (ability to solo without dying non-stop) yes I definitely would pay 5 dollars more. I'd pay 100 per month for a bit of solo loving.

I think the key to any system or program like this would be in the credibility and transparency of CCP. I know i would be a fair bit more to get some of the features I wanted. But the real question is. Could a process like this generate enough revenue to actually make the desired change?
As to the argument of CCP should already be upgrading the features in the game.. this is true but with only finite resources they have to chose features that
A) Effect a large portion of the player base , though their perception of large portion may be off B) Generate hype so people will sub up C) Fit it in with the scheduled 2 expansions a year policy.
With some type of crowdsourcing system CCP could use the extra income to directly effect in game mechanics that we want (existing player base) on time tables that we want (within reason) |
