1 AU(Astronomical Unit)=93,000,000 miles (~149.6m km)(the distance from Eath to Sun)

Edited by: Brent Steel on 21/03/2004 17:59:08 it is a bit of a strange unit of measurement to use as it is a distance between a planet and a star that do not exist in the game. surely light seconds/minutes/hours/days/weeks/years for distance and a multiplier on the speed of light for velocity would be better as this is a relatively universal constant.

As Earth is the origin planet, it makes sens that this unit has been keeped over all this time. Why change a way to measure things when it works ? So 1 UA is roughly 150 millions km, although the mean of this distance is lost for memories. Now, think about it : if an UA should be not used, then measuring time using days or years would be irrelevant too, as it is based on Earth''s duration of a day and year... Basicely, we would have to redo completely all the measurement system. |

No, it's not strange. An AU is known around the world as a method of measuring distance in space, so why not use it in a space based MMORPG. ----- I have taken all knowledge to by my province. - Sir Francis Bacon science & technology news

Edited by: Brent Steel on 25/03/2004 13:46:46 I think you misunderstood me. There is nothing wrong with AU as a measurement in real life. I was reffering to the world of eve. I could not find the planet earth or the Sol system in the eve universe anywhere, so how exactly did the eve universe ever come up with an AU if it is based on the distance of a non existant planet from a non existant star in a non existent solar system. Hence my comment about using some basis of measurement that is likely to be similar between our real life universe and the fictional galaxy of eve (like the speed of light).
(unless earth and sol are part of the history of eve and I just havn't read about them anywhere)

Taken from here: EVE is a world far away from mankind's original habitat, planet Earth. How far away, and where, no one knows. Humans got there through a natural wormhole, and gazing upon a sky never before seen, were completely unable to determine the whereabouts of this new world. From the system of New Eden, where the gate of EVE that once led to the old world lies, humans expanded in all directions at a great pace, exploring and colonizing. ----- I have taken all knowledge to by my province. - Sir Francis Bacon science & technology news

I agree that a more universal measurement system could be used, someting based on Planck units, http://www.planck.com/ but practically no one would want to get used to that.
On the other hand, they haven't forgotten their original ties to Earth. Even 23000 years is not enough to forget that the Gallente are French. ...wait, that didn't sound right.

The AU is a standard measurement for things of a solar systemish size, so it isn't strange for it to be still used in the distant future - after all we're still using metres today whose origin isn't know to most people.

Not all of us ! Some are still using inches and feet.
Wonder whose foot and inch were used in the first place. Anyone knows ?

The only thing I use feet for is to walk around
But it's right, even though the planets of the EVE universe are far from earth, the people clearly haven't forgotten their origins. For example, this article explains why the 24-hour clock is still used in EVE.

Go to http://groups.google.com/ and search for 1au = and the google calculator will do the conversion.
1 Astronomical Unit = 149 598 000 000 meters

Just because there's no more access to the galaxy where the origin of the Races in EVE lays, doesn't necessarily mean that earth does not exist anymore. Earth (and the sol system) actually lies behind the not working EVE-Gate. And even if millenias have passed, the EVE-People didn't really forgot their origins, and some are still trying to solve the mystery of the EVE-Gate malfunction.
There's alot of background stories on this stuff under "World of EVE", Chronicles, Scientific Articles, Short Stories. Worth reading for sure. Have a look there if you think Earth has nothing to do with EVE.

or if you're inclined to use miles! 1 Astronomical Unit = 92 955 887.6 miles
or nautical miles for the sailors out there 1 Astronomical Unit = 80 776 457.9 nautical miles
Google unit conversions are great.

thought everyone knew that Eve was born via the wormhole from earth
i for one would like to see earth appear, if only for a breif time. i dont know why, i know its not real but it seems right to be able to see the homeworld again. -------------------------------------------
