Hmmmm. Games based on movies usually suck. Movies based on games usually suck. I guess developing them both at the same time would be an example of highly efficient suckage.
Or something really cool. It'll be interesting to see how this turns out.

There are always exceptions to the rule. The movie Stargate has spawned two successful television series and is being turned into an MMO. It will be interesting to see how Stargate Worlds develops.

For you, I'm thinking Jake Gyllenhaal.
Yes, this is where someone recommends Heath Ledger to play someone else and sparks up a Brokeback Mountain joke. Sorry in advance :)

I'm afraid that this just proves that Hollywood still has no clue. All they see is WoW's subscription count and belive any MMOG will do the same, secure in that knowledge by stupid studies like that one that said that MMOG players play 20 hours a week vs 8 hours a week. They fail to mention that they play that much on ESTABLISHED, YEARS OLD games, not MMOG-of-the-week.
Movie studios will rush out these types of games and stop supporting them months after their movie comes out. They won't concentrate on making a good game, that'll keep players captivated for years with plenty to do and arrange the customer releations and support needed for a game like this. Nope, they'll just put in what they need to advertise their movie tickets. Bet you'll be able to buy tickets in game too!
I'm really scared for what this will do to the game genre, I simply can't see anything good coming from it. -- Lil Miner |

Rod gets OWNED!
I'm currently ambivalent about the SG MMOG. I don't know why they're making new art instead of using the stuff form the movie and shows. That would make it much more interesting and immersive, IMO.

To be fair, if you're playing a mmorpg, you're very likely to be playing that much. If the game is lousy, there just won't be many people playing it, but those that do play will put the time in. It's the nature of the beast.
Eve is a bit of an exception, as I find it fairly easy to login for about an hour and actually engage in some satisfying gameplay...other mmorpgs I've tried seem to require longer stretches of playtime to do anything worthwhile. Then again, maybe I'm just more easily amused than most Eve players are.

Kieron, I demand you contact SKG/Dreamworks and request a film based on EVE online! A Big blockbuster. I bet you pounds to dollars that it would make a great SciFi film - and will make some Real Life ISk... erhmm dollars or whatever for CCP.

The Matrix worked well rather well. Notice how the sequals didn't feature this interesting plot device and so were of a 'lower quality' than the first. ----

Just a placeholder at the Stargate Worlds MMO site, but there is a little bit more information at the company site, Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment.
I was fortunate enough to meet some of their Dev team at the Austin Games Conference this year, including their Community Manager (Hi Khatie! ). They seem like a very nice group of people with a lot of potential, and I wish them good luck.

I genuinely wish the stargate mmo's team luck on this project.
The movie was good as is the TV series so it would be a sin if the MMO was bad.
Ill keep an eye on this and who knows it may even get to be my second MMO to play appart from eve.
In case youy havent guessed ive yet to find a rival mmo to eve not that a rival would stop me playing eve it would just mean i split my time between them.

The Matrix worked well rather well. Notice how the sequals didn't feature this interesting plot device and so were of a 'lower quality' than the first.
The Matrix worked because the point of view switched to the virtual world, where a lot of comic book style action took place. And the whole "what is reality" theme worked well. I can't comment about the sequels because I haven't gotten around to seeing them yet.
A movie about an Eve pod pilot would be largely from the point of view of a ship. To make the movie more accessible to a general audience, they'd probably do away with the pod pilot concept, much like Starship Troopers did away with the mobile infantry power suits...which turns it into a different kind of story.
To remain true to the Eve universe, a movie would likely not focus on pod pilots...or it would be about pod pilots who are rarely in their pods. Maybe a movie about someone in training to attain pod pilot status...and enters their pod at the end of the film.
No insult to Eve intended, but there are plenty of other space operas available that would make better movies than Eve.
