I was mining as usual today in 0.5 security. Along comes a ship type I haven't seen before. I pull up the description and it says something to the effect of "A Caldari destroyer designed to have great firepower but weak defenses". Ok, a gank attempt. I sit there like a bump on a log in my procurer. I don't activate any defensive mechanism. I don't deploy my hobgoblin drones. I don't do anything but sit there. He slow boats up to me until he is about 3k away and then warps out. Nothing else.
What is the deal? This has happened more than once. I never do anything, they never do anything, come close and warp off. Is there something he is doing when he is slow boating right up next to me? Is he just faking it or what? |

He was sizing you up. A single Destroyer will not be able to take on a tanked Procurer alone. He could have been checking to see if you were afk so he can bring friends. But there are plenty of other tasty targets available, that are more cost effective. |

He might have scanned you to check your defenses. Or (more likely) he was disappointed to not see any easy targets and just tried to scare you away.
Thing is, a single Catalyst cannot kill a Procurer in high-sec. (Unless you are somehow a legal target, due to war, suspect flag, etc...) Even if you don't tank your Procurer, they need at least three Catalysts and if you do tank it to the max, they need at least ten. |

As a ganker myself from time to time skiffs and procurers are generally "safe" options. For one thing they only have one possible strip miner to drop and if you fit it right it either one can field a buffer tank that will take several dessies to take down. When this ISK put in is not recovered by the ISK value of modules dropped by the target, you will generally be passed over for a Mac or a Hulk. This does not prevent people from killing you for the lawls but gankers doing it for profit generally won't. |

I wount be making a New thread about this, so I hope OP wount mind if I ask question here.
I am still quite a huge newby in EVE and most of the time I spent mining. I resubbed just few days ago and while I am training my offensive skill I still mine as it gives me more income then Level 1 and 2 missions. So I was mining in usual spots in 0.6 system. The local multiboxer is a nice fella who invites me for buffs. Next thing I notice that all of his accounts are gone and only orca is up. The system got really empty ( which is very unusual ). I did scanned out some T2 amar Torpedo bomber flying around ( might be just coincidence, I cant remember its name for the love of god too, it looked more as industrial ship then bomber estetics wise... ). Then Vexor showed up on scans with stupid "its a bait" name. The system got constantly 3-4 people jump in jump out. ( its weird, because system is pretty much dead as only miners hang out here and it is in the middle of nowhere ). I fly Macky and with all this I got really uncomfortable. I just suspended all mining for now. I wonder was I a bit paraoid or there was something shady going on. Could I have been a target? Or maybe that multiboxer? I could not ask him nothing as he did not replied for a while.
Cheers for info on this. I know it might be a stupid question, sorry. |

Always better to be safe then sorry
For the Orca pilot. Im guessing he had to go AFK due t real life or similar and simply left the Orca out so you wouldent loose bonuses. Of course there is always a chance that the Orca pilot works with gankers, but if that was the case i would think he would just leave his mining ships out, knowing he wouldent be targeted, to make sure you dident get suspicious.

Keep your safety on green and don't shoot anybody. Unless you are at war, no one can legally shoot you and CONCORD will respond if they do. A single stealth bomber isn't going to gank you and unless someone is doing it for lols a fleet of stealth bombers won't be used at all. Keep watch on local and dscan. Get out if you see catalysts on dscan. Hey CCP, please slush my fund like you did for SOMER Blink. |

Ok, how do you scan somebody to see their fit? How close do you need to be? I still find it strange that I mine for 30 or so minutes after he warps off and nobody ever comes around. |

Alot of the guys in my corp do occasional suicide ganks with destroyers whenever we arent out doing anything else. Most of them pass on procurers. They arent worth very much. Retrievers are easily soloable by a thrasher or catalyst. Mackinaws and hulks are worth quite a bit more and are in abundance all over eve. They are generally the favored targets. |

You need to first passively target them (which lets you lock them without them knowing they are locked), then hit a ship scanner.
I usually gank with two characters. One flies a Procurer that isn't fit for mining throughput but instead for cargo scanning. They slowboat up to 2km from a possible target and scan them,
If it's a juicy target that I can kill, Sabriz warps on top of the alt. During the warp I set safety red, turn on sensor boosters and overheat my guns. Then I land next to my alt (and so within optimal range of the mark usually), and lock them.
I prioritize Hulks over Mackinaws over Covetors over Retrievers, expensive fits over cheap fits, targets with sizable bounties over targets without, and targets with combat drones orbiting them over targets without.
If the mark returns aggression (usually this means attacking me with drones that are set to autoattack), then I will try to lock and pop their pod too. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. The difference between an enemy and a friend is that you stab your enemies in the front. |
