Edited by: Godagast Moonbane on 09/02/2006 02:26:03 Here is a translation I made of the German article from krawall.de so you don't have to deal with the god-awful Google "language". I made it in 20 minutes as I went along, so it's not 100% polished, but you'll understand what is going on. "Krawall" means "riot" or "ruckus", by the way.
EVE Online: Red Moon Rising
Three years are a damned long time, especially for a computer game. Few people would have expected that, after our first foray into the EVE universe in 2003, another extensive review of the MMOG from Iceland would be in the works. Except those responsible at Crowd Control Productions, of course. The developers from Reykjavik are dedicated exclusively to their grand space adventure. Since the launch about three years ago, they have been continuously expanding the huge game world and driving the storyline forward. And the plan is working: the community is growing. At the beginning of January, more than 22.000 players were active simultaneously in the unsharded game world. More than 70,000 accounts have been sold in total. To keep this continuously growing community entertained, a big free update named "Red Moon Rising" was introduced recently. Or, as lead producer Nathan Richardsson describes it: "It is a huge addition of content to a universe that grows every day." Huge content addition? Daily growing universe? Reason enough for us to get the somewhat dusty spaceship out of the hangar and start into the i infinite reaches of the EVE universe.
(caption) Old age weakness? No thanks! Even three years after release, the graphics of the EVE universe still look fabulous, especially the effects.
EVE on speed boost
You don't know what the heck we are talking about? No problem. A short overview for all who have never heard of EVE before: In a huge universe, you start a career of your choice as a member of one of four races. Choice really means that here, since the game lives off its player freedom. Whether you make your money by mining raw materials, transporting various goods, as a trader, pirate or whatever, it's down to you how to spend your virtual life. Even the trade business is for the most part regulated by the needs of the community. Goods are produced by the players themselves, supply and demand decide over the price. If you've tasted blood now, read our extensive review (I might translate that one some other day when I have more time)
Pimp my ride
But back to "Red Moon Rising" and the huge addition of content. One of the main novelties of the add-on is to expand the "player versus environment" missions. CCP has extended the COSMOS-system and is now going to integrate more and more new scenarios and missions into the game. This is supposed to help newbies get more action without needing access to the big corporations. Already now, you can get numerous new tasks at the mission agents and discover supporting storylines that were previously unknown. But what makes cruising the unending reaches nice and leisurely? A spaceship that's pimped up using all the tricks of the trade, of course. That's why CCP is bringing us a whopping 39 new flight machines and assorted equipment with "Red Moon Rising".
(caption) Bigger is better! But it will be a while until you can fly one of the big hummers. After all, the necessary skills and money have to be gained the hard way.
In addition to cruisers, elite miners, interdictors and battlecruisers, the new capital ships are creating a great many lustful eyes. Carriers and motherships provide the buyer with a mobile home base, even including clone devices in case of the motherships. Sounds good, but it's getting better still. The huge titans are the real thing. Easily the largest ships in the EVE universe, they wield enourmous firepower.

Best example: the doomsday attack kills everything and everybody who can't flee in time. In addition, titans have the ability to open portals which smaller ships can use as they would a stargate.
Every beginning is difficult (German proverb)
However, it takes quite a while until you can pilot one of the fat ships and show around the big trousers. There are more skills to learn than ever, more sequences to be understood, and of course, there's more money that needs to be made. Although the reworked tutorials that come with "Red Moon Rising" have made the entrance a little easier, the start into the icelandic space adventure remains a hard piece of bread. Newbies should expect a long familiarization phase, casual gamers will be chronically lagging behind. It's ligthyears away from the beginner-friendly MMOG's of th current generation. But that's no problem at all. Somebody who is willing to invest a lot of time and work, and looking for a complex space simulation with an epic background story, is served better than ever before by "EVE Online: Red Moon Rising".
Summary by Jan Hendik:
Very impressive. CCP are developing their online flagship continuously and carefully. Not only is the team from Iceland preventing boredom in the continuously growing community. The new ships, missions and other improvements also have the potential of luring casual gamers back into the EVE universe more often.
Nonetheless it remains a good piece of work for beginners who want to get into the game. Even the newly improved tutorial isn't all that much help here. But if you get through the hard familiarizatzion phase and feel at home in the EVE universe, anyway, "Red Moon Rising" offers you the best EVE of all time. So dust off your spaceship and go for it.
Well, there you have it. Do I get a sticky for my valiant efforts?

Thanks for this!
I saw that the English translation was simply a Google translation and didn't even click it because I know how bad machine translation is typically.

Thanks for the translation. I liked how the google translation couldn't even get "Red Moon Rising" right, yet had no problem translating the very colloquial "Pimp my Ride." Did that strike anyone else as wierd?

That's because "Pimp my ride" was used in English in the original German article, just like "bigger is better", for instance. There are certain anglicisms that are well-known enough to be used just like that - just like in English, you have expressions like "schadenfreude" or "angst".

I preferred the Google version. "Thus spaceship polishes and off for it" ftw.

The Google version is hilarious. My faves:

Which reminds me, I need to go train my trouser skills....

Thanks for the translation. Not as funny as the Google version but far more informative. I am glad I now know what the reference to "thick trousers" meant.

If you think the google-translated article is funny, try going to a free online translator web page, typing something dirty in it, translating it to german and then back to english. Good heavens, I've never laughed so much --------------------

Thanks, this is really helpful.
Anyone know where I can get hold of the trouser skill book though? Being a noob myself, I often have need for a clean pair of trousers when flying around in 0.0 and I see a big nasty pirate on my overview. I hope this skill will enable me to keep my trousers cleaner for longer. Have you ever tried changing while in a pod? not easy.
And for any American 10 year olds, trousers means pants. It's English.
