Not sure where to post this, but.... I was solo mining in .9 space (yes, I am a noob) and Jettisoning my minerals in unsecured cargo cans to pick up later (within the hour) with my industrial ship. Some guy approaches my cans and starts stealing my minerals. He does not flash red to me after this and if I try to fire on him I get the concord warning. I think they would come and blow me up if I try to take him out, Is there an exploit out there that allows him to do this without lowering his security rating, or am I doing something wrong? Doesn't seem right if he's not in my gang.
Sorry if this is not the place to post this
Many thanks,
Jehle

just a bug. it could be u need to open and close map to see him flash properly. or it was a real bug and u should pettition.
since u were mineing u prolly couldnt have killed him but a pettition will get your ore back.
and just put a small sheild booster on your ship head down to .8 and set up a secure can.
now i hafta kill something cause i was nice

AFAIK (and I am a noob too) you can't not fire on ore thiefs in 0.6-1.0 space without to get the concord on you. Meaning there may have been something messed up with the flagging, but ore stealing is part of the game and you will most definitely not get your ore back when petitioning, and you will probably get shot at for fireing on an ore thief. -- take my love take my land take me where I cannot stand I don't care I'm still free you can't take the sky from me |

WHAT ?? come on... dont give out wrong infomation !! after RMR everyone CAN fire back at Ore thiefs if they dare, no matter what Sec. the system has... But you need to get the aggro timer and a red flashing target before you can fire !! ----------------------------------------------- Regards

I've noticed that lag affects the flagging, so if the system you're in is really laggy it can give ore thieves plenty time to steal your stuff before they get flagged. -------------------------------------------------- - Suhadi |

A few things that I learned in the past few weeks of my newbness:
A: find a quiet system, it is surprising how many systems there are with virtually no one in them within even 5-10 jumps from the big player hubs. No other players = fat asteroids and no ore thiefs. (Imho the best spots are the systems with no stations, even macro miners stay clear of those, if you make insta jump bookmarks it makes really little difference if you have to haul your ore to a station one jump away)
B: there isn't much you can do about ore thiefs, unless you fit a warp scrambler on your mining vessel they will just warp away with your ore before you can put a dent into them.

Looks like what he said was right - just wasn't very clear.

Edited by: Vogon on 10/02/2006 13:30:24 You can most definately shoot ore thief scum after they have struck in 0.5 to 1.0. However the flagging system does not always work so you have to be careful.

Has to be 0.7 or less to use secure cans I thought?
And please, ffs people, use Giant secure containers. Warping into a belt and seeing a dozen or more small/medium containers all right next to each other makes me want to break out the smartbombs to kill the belt lag monster.

The key is "unsecured cargo cans", which I beleive to mean he was not using "jet" cans. A character does not flag when they take from a secure (unless it was anchored) or unsecure cargo can, but only when they take from a jet can. I fact, smart thiefs dont even open the secure or unsecure cans, they just scoop the whole thing up.

You can't, but you can still have them password assigned (I think) and all that, and then just jetcan mine into that, then into the hauler.
But yeah, a Iteron 3 makes a killing off a few sec can miners.
God now I have to kill someone for being nice, and I'm stuck at work.

ok. he was jetcan mining in a .9 someone stole his ore but he did not get the 15min killrights on the person, there are many reasons for this, fe. you need too realise these few points before you start pointing... donŠt turn this into a jet can v. secure can flame
don't turn this into a ore thief flame. --------------

The tread starter is Pator Tech School (start corp) therefore if another PTS pilot takes from his can (being same corp) does he get flagged? (in other words does the sme corp rule work for NPC corps) |

If he was mining to secure cargo cans in a .9 system then what he described can easily happen. Apparently scooping a secure can to your cargo bay does not get you flagged. I've stolen many giant secure cans with my Badger in high security space by simply scooping them to my bay. Once they're there I can open them up and take out the contents. So mining to a secure can will only protect you from pirates that do not have the cargo space to stow said can in their cargo hold.
Also keep in mind that the current favorite pirate technique that I use myself is to move all of the miner's ore to a jetcan of my own and have a hauler of mine come and take the ore. If the miner happens to try and take his ore back from my can then he's flagged to my whole gang and we get to blow him away although I've been working solo lately. I've noticed that most miners don't operate with any security in high sec space thinking Concord will protect them from the mean pirates. It might be a good idea to rethink this strategy because if anything the can flagging that's been added has only made them more vulnerable. Knowledge is power For I walk in the Valley of the Shadow of Death, I will fear no evil. |

NPC Corps are handled different for criminal flagging. He should be flagged in any case. But the whole flagging system is pretty buggy atm. -- $ perl -n -e 'print "Stop blameing pirates! Oveur is the root of all evil!\n" if m/podkill|lost my ship|gank|gate camp|Verone/;'
