Gank is king - long live the gank.
Seems to be the way the game is going at the moment. I got ganked again in a 0.3. Usual MO. Solo pirate goaded me into a fight - mates jumped in - webbed and warped me and pop.
Now I am not on a pirate rant - they are part of the game. But if I had not been alone the outcome may have been different. In fact the guys who were involved - fair dues to them. As I said before - that's the game. But what hope is there for me as a solo player?
I could join a bigger corp - sure. But I'd rather do what I'm doing. A bit ratting - a bit mining and the odd PVP until I get to perhaps 2 years worth of skills so I can take on more than one ship bigger than me. But until then I guess it's same old - same old.
I love this game - and perhaps I shouldn't write this post after losing a hac. But it's a shame I have to go a direction in the game I am made to go rather than a way I would like to go. Jimmy Osram

I don't think there should be any changes in game mechanics to reward the solo player.
If you want to solo PvP and not die all the time, consider piracy yourself. Or - spy on pirates, find out which ones are comfortable without a ganksquad as backup, fit exactly to counter them, then bait. Lots of waiting but great gaming.

Why is it that everyone thinks you need 2 years and 20+million skill points and bigger ships to effectively pvp. This is simply not that case. Bigger does NOT mean better.
Solo pvp is all about picking your fights wisely, not being foolish when attacking someone. Good ship setup, knowing how to use your ship and smart play. Sure you won't win every fight, noone ever wins all fights.

Sadly, the game is very dull for the new player. The only weakness to the skill system is the fact that late comers are always behind the curve in PVP.
No matter how hard you work on something, it is still normally decided by skill points, which trickle in. Even specialized it takes months before you can hope to actually PVP on a semi even playing field.
The only real answer is to work your butt off to get ISK and buy a PVP capable toon from another player.
Personal opinions mind you :)

I know Jimmy, he's a good guy and would never reject a good fight. But seeing him being gangked makes me frown. If the so called piewats can not fight a good 1 v 1 against a SINGLE pilot, then they really should go back to carebear mining in Jita. Seems they are not worthy the 0.0. I am not, far from it. But c'mon. Jimmy for sure does his best in a 1 vs 1 and does NOT smack you IF losing, but giving full credits to the victor. And yes.."because we can" answers will for sure come.. -----------------------------------------------------

Jimmy it was easier long time ago to fight solo or insmall gangs, nowaday its hard.
Imho only way is to fight pirates on chockpoints, if you attack alliances you get blobed.

I think you just need to pick your fights better. Don't let anyone goad you into anything. Pirates tend to go for the easy kills (not meant as a slam, it's the only way to make piracy profitable), so always assume they have backup nearby.
Fight when you want to, not when your enemy wants to. That's half the battle right there.
Lone wolves like us have to be paranoid and real speedy on the fight-or-flight response.

I fight nearly all the time solo in a BS, and got about 5 solo bs kills in the last 2 weeks (off and on pvping).

Solo PVP is alive. Just its some what differant then it used to be. You'll find that people have become well, smarter. Most of them have figured out that fitting stabs can svae them from losing to anything but a gank squad now a days.
Also, where before you could often find someone before they noticed you hanging around, now they just log before you can load the system. Or they are warping to a safe spot or POS before you finish your first scan. everyone has scan probes on thier overview settings now, so those almost never work.
Its more a case of the mechanics of the game making it nearly impossible to kill someone whos smart and doesn't want to fight. And as the game gets older, more and more people reilize this. Look on the forums and you'll see 256 ways to avoid being killed in the first few pages.
So solo pvp isn't dead, its just much much harder. And anything CCp does to make it better, will most likely result in large groups having even more of an advantage then ever before. Its to hard to make something easy for a lone pilot, and not over power a group.

Soloing can be such pwn.. last time I took my vaga to pure blind I came back with 6 bs kills, 2x hac kills, a mackinaw kill and a pile of smaller ships killed after 1.5 days of roaming.
Moral of the story:
1) I got lucky, 2) vaga pwns all, 3) soloing is very doable. --------------------------------------

There are lots of people that go solo. I often go solo, because a blob usually means waiting 2 hours for everybody to get ready and then spending 10 min per jump at a snail pace, and accomplish nothing of note anyway (except for the rare fights where everybody just says, "what the heck, we're here! Let's engage them anyway" which usually ends up in a spectacular, enjoyable battle).
I think you'll have the most solo success in an interceptor, assault frigate, or (with cloaking changes ) a stealth bomber. Targets are plentiful, and you have the speed and agility to avoid most ganks. It will take lots of practice and ship loss before you develop the keen eye necessary to know when somebody is baiting you, and when they are not. And sometimes you'll misjudge and lose your ship anyway
I wouldn't try solo'ing in anything larger personally (not larger than cruiser, anyway) because success rate vs loss ratio becomes to get distorted and you'll lose money at a fast rate unless you're using the cheap snipe tactic or use WCS. Besides, these ships are not difficult to acquire, both skill- and cost- wise, and you need not spend a great deal of time training to a competent level.

solo pvp ftw! sure i blow up alot, but ive had a few fair fights here and there.. its all or nothing for me ;) thats why i blow up alot lol. but if i wouldnt have engaged the thought of that i might have done it would kill me.
to me the good thing with eves pvp system is that its unpredictable, sure lots of ppl group and you will loose alot of ships to those, but when you find that perfect fight..
no other game gets the thrill meter up that high! thats one of the most negative to grouping/gank squads too as they dont get that thrill, they just activates their stuff and goes to the next one.. fleet battles are the same, its booring.. some say its fun, but i cant figure out how mutch more fun it is then going hunting solo where you actualy need skills and get a real kick making you high for days thinking about it

True. It depends on the wallet, skill and skillpoints. If I knew that there would be a 50/50 chance to loose my bs, I wouldn't fight solo with it. I prefer to have a few hours pvp fun with a ship and to be able to replace it in case of a loss in 1 or 2 hours, not the other way around like to have half an hour fun with that ship and spend two evenings with grinding to get a new ship. That's just not worth it.
I want pvp, but also become more wealthy, which wouldn't work for me, if I was flying around on my own in my BS looking for 1-vs-1 situations. Might change, if I know that I am able to win a lot of fights and am rich enough to replace losses easily. Then I wouldn't care either. But at the moment, I know that dueling vs. an experienced vet in a BS would end with a bs loss and grinding for me. I don't like grinding to replace losses, so I'd try to avoid that. I prefer to fly something cheap for 1-on-1 except that I knew that the risk to loose was rather low.

Ganking is very predominant in this game. I am part of 4 man corp thats dedicated to using the skill of its members to beat our enemies. However when our enemys lose one ship... in come the blobs. The way I see it, the people who blob are simply carebears in disguise. Why? They are so afraid of losing ships and have so little faith in they're abilities that the only way the can engage a small group of skilled PvPers is to blob them with 250,000,001 ships. But you know what ****es me off the most? Its not the fact that they kill us, its the fact that the sheer mass of them jumping in on us lags us so bad that we sometimes can't do a damn thing.
I cant stop the blobs nor do I have suggestions on how to stop the blobs. Blobs are a part of the game and I've accepted that but it makes me feel better to complain about them every now and then. Alliances are the worst, ugh!

Actually, fitting and personal skill can mean a lot more than sp. A nicely fitted t1 cruiser can kill a poorly fitted t2 cruiser. If boths players know what they're doing, the t1 cruiser will prolly lose though.
And there'll always be people joining the game. You'll have an "even playing field" with the people who joined the game about the same time as you did.
The biggest problem for a solo pvp'er is the fact that people who are actually out to pvp are usually in a group and not by themselves (one of the reasons I still haven't fully evolved from the npc'er-killing ways of solo pvp )

Unfortunetally the picture of a lone person taking out the entire Vietcon army is a very false and misguiding notion when you apply this to Eve. If you want to do great things you have to have the assistance, cooperation , and friendship of others. Jimmy, yes you could go solo and do things by yourself, however this is not the most effecient way of doing things. If you enjoy doing what your doing, fine, continue. However this leaves you open to random things like what you just said from happening... *BOOOM*.... Having friends is like having insurance. First off if you die they can help you get stuff back. And unlike insurance, or CONCORD for that matter, they can actually stop the loss from happening. I am sorry for your loss but if you want the loss of a hac to sting less, other poeple can help you with that.

I am well aware of small unit tactics thanks
But you gotta feel good about taking 5 frigs (3 t1 and 2 t2) down when you are attacked by 8 or 9 and then a BS taking you down once it gets there of course the guristas BS that spawned was not helping matters much apart from making one of the crows warp out.
Just could not keep the crows in range to nail them. Going by the killmails I was attacked by about 10 differnt pilots. and I think at least one of the crows may have shoot its self dry. I know I was runing short on ammo .
I would have avoided action if I could have done I don't really PvP much. To bad they were not intrested in a ransom I did over but I don't think black omega security do ransoms. Also I did not think I would have done that well against a 5 wolfpack.
But it was a good fight and quite fun, well at least my PvE setup does not to bad in PvP, which is good to know
And no before anybody asks I don't fit stabs... ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |

Can anyone help out with good solo PvP tips, setups and tactics? I am new to PvP, but keep getting directed towards learning from gangs, who of course teach you how to fight in gangs. Any links around?
There would be many more solo PvPers if we knew how to start off. |

When you solo, it is almost always 'piracy' seeing as most other PvPers go in groups and so you have to roam around looking for targets of opportunity. 0.0 is normally your best bet for solo PvPing and the only hard bit is getting in past the first 5 jumps. You will get kills and if you play smart and keep an eye on the map and local you should be able to come out unscathed.
Solo play is viable, but it requires a lot of concetration and skill compared to flying in a group

I suppose you can look at it that way. But I solo pvp cause its easier to do than run with a gang. Having only yourself to look out for is by far less stressful than running around with a dozen friends.
I dont believe that sp lark, there are many noobs I know who kick ass in pvp because they think first and their enemies dont as they are dealing with a noob.

Its getting more difficult to solo pvp. Recently I have been trying to kill 2 hac and 1 prophecy against my mega.Using all my skills and ingenuity I had a situation where i had the 2 hac locked down and i was tanking the damage of the prophecy. One HAC scrambled -1 then warped off at 50% armor and in jumped a raven and 2 frigs to assist the others.OFC I had no choice other than to warp out but it was satisfying to have owned 3 ships even if I didnt manage to finish them off.Itwould be nice if there was more countermeasures to combat gank squads. While evasion is not usually too hard to actually engage and kill when vastly outnumbered is very difficult indeed right now.

Edited by: Lisa Run on 12/02/2006 17:23:45 Well, if you roam around alone with your hac and kill npc'ers, barges etc. you shouldn't complain, if 5 people try to hunt you down after that.
About a week ago a gang with some smaller ships and 3 BS ganked in our area and shoot down a npc'er in a raven. Finally we met some friends and got our chance to jump into them with 5 BS. It was a cool fight, we won, hope they enjoyed it too. But if they ever had the right to demand a fight with even numbers, they lost it in the second, when they attacked the lonely npc'er in the belt.
