I've been working on this for a bit. I call it, The 25 Fundamental Laws of Eve. Follow them and you will never fail.
#1: Never fly what you cannot afford. #2: Always check region prices. Never pay more than you have to. #3: A deal for no profit is no deal at all. #4: Tritanium is not worthless. #5: A free item is never free. #6: Don't **** off a pirate. #7: Always have an up-to-date clone. #8: Make sure your clone is where you want it to be. #9: Never take courier missions. #10: Never take courier missions into 0.4 space. #11: Repeat customers are as rare as Tech 2 BPOs. Keep them happy. #12: The lower the security, the higher the reward. #13: Don't accept gifts from strangers. #14: Don't deal in slaves... Unless you're Amarrian. #15: Everybody has their price. #16: Trust no one. #17: Never tell how much ISK is in your account. #18: Everything is for sale. #19: You're more likely to be ganked in 0.4 than 0.1. #20: Someone profits from every deal, visibly or not. #21: Keep your enemies close. #22: Nobody is poor. #23: Mislabeling happens. #24: Always inspect the merchandise. #25: When all else fails, make up a law.

Because there's always mining. A day of mining and you'll have quite a bit of money. Anyone complaining that they're poor is just impatient.

Well I've never heard of that. Guess I'll have to amend that rule.

I always said that first one as "Never fly what you can't afford to lose". Actually, I say "If you can't afford to lose it, you can't afford to fly it.", but it's the same thing.
By definition, it's not possible to fly what you cannot afford. So your #1 makes no sense.

Yes it does. If your ship is given to you, and costs more than you have in your account, then you obviously can't afford it, and you can't afford to replace it if you lose it.

I think there should be a caveat to that
Tritanium is worthless until you try building something big At which point it has worth, not because of it's intrinsic value but because it costed so much time / money paying frieighters to get it to where you're building

Must be the dumbest "rule" in EVE. Why do people keep saying this ?
Why do I need to replace the ship I just lost. Nobody said I have to have that ship in my hangar.
I bought that ship, I took it out where I knew I might loose it, so what ?
Where in the rules does it say that I need to replace every ship I loose ? No really I'd like to know.

Quote: Where in the rules does it say that I need to replace every ship I loose ? No really I'd like to know.
why do you have a toolbox?
if you break a tool, you replace it. even if you finish doing the job your currently on, without it.
that, or you spend more money on a better one to replace its function.
if you already had 2... well who said you had to spend cash money to replace it? you already have if you've already got an additional one.
at least thats the principle.
but honestly I think most people fly things they can't replace out of pocket, there IS a certain reasonability to the arguemnt that you can MAKE more money to be ABLE to replace it easily, using the irreplacable tool, and if you are careful enough, you'll be unlikely to use it, and thus not have a problem.
excluding the most bizzare circumstances, could even someone who has NO SP invested EXCEPT to get into the pilot seat, lose a BS in 1.0 or .9 space? or even .6-.8? not REALLY. I mean you'd have to be deliberately trying to lose it. I mean it'd take 5 minutes for those rats to even get through the hull.
BUT will that person be prone to pushing the limit once they get bored mining with Miner 1's? yes, and they might test the limit confident that they could get away if anything happened... next thing you know, oops, "hey boss... I found some money.... what? why would you want to see me in the apoc you gave me last thursday?"

I think there are certainly exceptions to the "Don't fly what you can't replace" rule. For example, my new Eagle heavy assault cruiser is going to be for running L4 missions. It's basically a way to generate lots of money and get me lovely corp and faction standings. Right now I happen to have enough money to replace it if I lost it, but losing that kind of money would be incomprehensible to me, and it's not really something I'm willing to accept. Hence, it's going to be used for missions, which are essentially risk-free. However, with the amount of money it will generate, I will be able to easily PvP in my Harpy without any problems replacing it, which is what I always wanted. -------------------------------------[04:04:04] Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk

The rule doesn't say you need to have that specific ship. It's more like "If you will loose everything by loosing that ship, it's too expensive for you". ----

Because generally courier missions into 0.4 are traps and you will be ganked upon arrival.

Generally-zation is the mother of all sorts of bad things... like never leaving high-sec space nor your starter NPC corp, for example, another good rule of thumb to be safe...
Feel free to stick to your rules, though.
