Let's be a little bit curious: How do you name your ships and why?
I personally like it to use the names of semi-precious stones with a little modification. For example i name all my drakes "Saphiros". At the end i put a Roman numeral and rise it, if i lost my previous one or buy another Drake. Thus it resembles to for example " Saphiros IV " |

I use a four-letter abbreviation that tells me the fit (makes life easier when you have 20 Incursuses and 20 Vexors for different purposes in the hangar), followed by a proper name;
Incursuses are named after the knights of the Round Table (the lance, get it) Vexors according to maori gods (Vexor face reminds me of maori tattoos) Myrmidons are latin names of sea horses Dominixes are synonyms of power and that sort of DOMINATING stuff
Other ships are more random as I don't have piles of them, but I like to have a naming convention for the bread & butter ships.

I am all over the place with the names of my ships but, generally, go for something amusing, like my Obelisk is named Badonkadonk. But, my POSes are themed. Each POSes mods are named after the characters and places in different SciFi shows. One is for Star Wars, one for Star Trek, one for Firefly, etc. |

I have a Tengu named Windowlicker, because herp missile spam.
But then I have a Kronos named Ignie Ferroque (Fire and Sword).
And there's the Phobos I named Joy Toy (because pod-mails are gonna show implants, squeeeee!).
A nemesis named 'Squinty'. Don't ask. I said don't.
Really it boils down to a name that amuses me, and may or may not reference something about the ship itself. |

This is a fun subject.
I tend to name Haulers and Barges after Dave Matthews Band songs (don't know why) examples like
IG-Still Water IG-The Maker IG-Everyday
Combat Vessesl get harsher names
My WH Abaddon is named IG-Fist of God and before that my WH Armageddon was called IG-Bonecrusher before its untimely demise at the hands of a Zealot. I have a K-space Geddon called Creeping Death as well that is the first and only BS I bought. I usually build them now if I can.
The newest addition to my personal fleet is a Bhaalgorn named Diabolus Meretricis (Latin for Devil's *****)
I usually put IG- in front of my ships to to denote that they are mine, it gets a little confusing in ship arrays in WHs if I don't. |

If ship is owned by my corporation, it has IPS (Imperial Pharmacy Ship) on first of its name. Then it has usually name which is biblical, or inspires its captain to perform one's duty well, and it is also suited for the ship. Very often, if you only know the name, you can tell what kind of ship it is. IPS Cargoliner, IPS Ironworks, IPS Oppressor, IPS Furious
If ship is owned by me, it usually, but not always have two carefully chosen names, which are ofter biblical, or atleast heroic and also fit for the ship class.

I rarely have a pattern that I follow, but I'm pretty picky about giving a name to a ship. Once it is named, it is named, no changing it.
As for the names themselves, sometimes I'll name the ship after the first impression I had on it's appearance.

Not really a pattern, I barely buy ships so most of them get whimsical names...
My Apocalypse is called "Primum nocere". I too owed an Apo called "Tenacious *****" My Golem is called "Poison Arrow" My Nightmare is called "Nightmare" (yay, I was really inspired that day) My Machariel is called "I wanna be your dog" (I decided the name months before i already had the ship) My Noctis is the "Warm Muffin" My Bestower (recently defunct, RIP) was the "Turtle Mama" My Orca is the "Southern Comfort"
I too owe an Arbitrator called "Sexy Platypuss", a Harbinger called "Mikuru" (last and only survivor of a row of ships named after Haruhi Suzumiya's buddies) and some other ships i don't recall. So... no affordable NEx store... no full-fledged Incarna... no casual content... no solo content... no PvE content...-á

Generally whatever pops in my mind. More expensive ships get more time for naming. There might or might not be something hidden in the names depending on how creative I feel. For example the rokh Laevateinn can be either a fiery blade of destruction, or: rails do damage comparable to poking, poking is done best with a stick and laevateinn is literally translated (IIRC) a damage stick.
Small cheap ships that I won't use much typically get names such as Loltraktor, Imp's cute ballkick or simply Cormorant s (for salvaging). Medium-sized and not trivially cheap ships get names a bit less lolworthy, like my series of drakes named as Stalker and number + a letter for what purpose it is. Bigger, more expensive ships and the ones I spend a lot of time with get unique names, though a number might be still there. For a few examples there's Clairvoyance (tengu), The shriek of Nue (navy scorpion) and Wonky Donkey (charon). |

I usually use references to other fictional starships, or AI characters, though there are some exceptions. Some have names that enable a certain progression:
Rifters are named (First to Seventh) Samurai, escalating when it gets destroyed. I'm currently on Third Samurai. Blackbird's named Ace of Spades; if I ever get a second or more, those will be Two of Spades, etc. Hurricane is Ace of Hearts; same progression as the Blackbird.
The exceptions are Last of the Brave (Tristan), the Rifter series, Repeat Four (Stabber), Valiance 404 (Condor), Xari Li Soon (Badger), Arqenaut (Osprey)..and I think my Cormorant, but I can't remember what its name actually is.
The card-based names are technically exceptions, but they are based on logical extrapolation from King of Hearts, which was of a mass-produced ship class and thus presumably has similarly-themed sister ships. Let's...just assume there's some kind of signature here, 'k? ... ... OH WAIT. Jace Errata on Twitter |

I do something similar with my Drakes. I think the Drake resembles a spider. Its got a large ass like a spider does. Said ass contains the launchers which spew out the missiles. Not unlike the irritating hairs that tarantulas flick off of their abdomens. In the middle of the front face of the Drake are two bulges that look like a spider's fangs. It sort of has four protrusions on each side in front of the "abdomen" section, mirroring a spider's eight legs. So anyway I looked for cool spider-related names and came across the genus Theraphosa, which contains the giant "bird eating spiders". Theraphosa is apparently Greek for 'light beast', which works for the Drake seeing as how it spews orbs of light. I don't know how a spider got the name light beast. Maybe 'light' in this case refers to weight. I dunno. Whatever. I dropped the last 'a' to make it sound cooler and so my Drakes are named Theraphos III, Theraphos IV, etc... |

Tengu - Starfire Eclipse: I wanted something inspiring, noble and a little bit bombastic. This is the ship I spend the majority of my time in, so it needs to have a cool name.
Falcon - Snowblind II: My original ECM boat was a Blackbird called Snowblind. I figured that Snowblind made sense for a ship that leaves you unable to "see" properly. The Falcon was merely an upgrade.
Noctis - Raven: The raven is a carrion bird, feeding itself off corpses, and it makes less sense as the name of a battleship than it does as the name of a salvage boat.
Hyperion - Mahadeva: One of the many names of Shiva - it made sense for a nigh-invincible ship that destroys all within its reach.
Nidhoggur - Black Sun: This is my carrier, so of course it has to have one seriously badass name or it'd be an injustice. The Black Sun is a mythological and alchemical concept with various different interpretations but mostly I chose it because it sounded dark, ominous and cool without being immediately threatening.
Hurricane - Saltwater: I named this after the Chicane song, Saltwater. No other reason. I just needed a name for a battle Hurricane and it was the first thing that came to mind.
Keres - Trollboat Mk. IV: This was my first test run of the TrollKeres, a ship that can reliably take your targetting range down to beneath the Keres' orbit-and-point range. I had the idea of using it as a PvP boat for the sole purpose of trolling people by rendering them unable to warp away for hours at a time. I never got to test it.
Stiletto - LAN WTF: A Stilletto I bought during a war with Aduro Protocol. At the time there was apparently something up with Siigarii Kitawa's network, and he kept blaming his terribad PvP skills on his faulty connection, so everyone in the merc corp I was with at the time decided to rename their ships to LAN WTF.
Basilisks - Arclight Saviour and Whitewater Reclaimer: These were named along the same lines as my Tengu, but with a slightly different "feel" to them. Andreus Anthony LeHane Ixiris CEO, Mixed Metaphor

ah, generally i theme them based on their weapons or main attribute of the fit, like most of my heavy DPS amarr ships will have Fire in their name, Tanking ships will have Eternal in their name, or some synonym for those. I was on a Mirror's Edge marathon when i was buying my minmatar ships, so i ended up naming them after speedy knifey things, Blade's Edge, Switchblade, and my artillery hurricane i named Hammer Time. |

I use either song titles - my Blockade Runner is called "Superfast Jellyfish" (from a Gorillazs CD), and a SB called "The Seldom Seen Kid" (an Elbow CD title) or I use a variation on the theme of Iain M Banks' 'Culture' ship names usually including 'Gravitas':
Wot? No Gravitas?
Gravitas Deficiency
and so on
Although I do have a BS called "Me, I'm Counting" which is also from a Banks 'Culture' novel...
We need more space so that we can use the proper length ship names Banks come up with - my favourite for a BS, which doesn't fit, is "I Said, I've Got A Big Stick", and number two would be "The Anticipation Of a New Lover's Arrival"
Edit - just remembered my Orca is called "The Dirty Projector" because the band of that name have titled a couple of CD's with Orca in the title (such as Bitte Orca, for some reason - even though they are American - where exactly is Temeculah, anyway?) |

My mining ships are named functionally, example IM-004C: IM stands for "Ice Miner" (a mackinaw fit with optimal mining), 004 is account 004 - not that my accounts have numbers in them but with 4 monitors and 6+ accounts I need to quickly keep track of who is who and which window is what. So 004 is account 004 and I know right away it's the account on the monitor on the far left. And C means that I have lost at least 2 Mackinaws previously, on that account :) Of course having numbers in my ship names automatically makes people think I'm a bot but whatever. I'm never AFK for longer than it takes to take a weewee.
My other ships are given names that loosely describe their purpose. |

I used to give to name them "...", then just the ship type itself, like "Cynabal" for Cynabal. Keep doing it for all ships, since it doesn't tell anything about who is flying it, which is useful when there's more than just a few people in local.
Some friend gave me a Cynabal called "The Plague" though, keeping that one forever and always, since it describes Cynabals so well. |

I'm a big fan of Iain M Banks' sci fi novels about The Culture . There is an in joke enjoyed by the independent minded ships when choosing their own names and I've tended to follow the same path:
My Rifter tackle is called Gravitas Tripped, arty Thrasher is Gravitas Thrashed, shield 'cane is Gravitas Seeker and so on.
Just for giggles, whenever I'm in a rookie ship I rename it Maelstrom
