I am new to Eve . I have been trying to find my way on my own and am having a hard time coming up with a good training plan. I've talked to a few people so far and it seems like training for a hauler, freighter and transport ships, is one good course of action. Another talked about the isk potential of PI. Can someone point me to a skill plan to do this efficiently? Any general advice is also appreciated.

Second question first: PI can be profitable at low SP if you're willing to work for it. You have to track markets, produce the right stuff, buy cheap goods (most likely; profitability usually isn't linked to doing full P0 to p4 chains), etc. Personally I find it horribly dull, but I still do a bit on the side when I'm bored. For a good overview of PI that includes which skills you need, look here.
But yes, you'll have to haul all those goods somehow, and that means an industrial and possibly a blockade runner (highly recommended in low sec). As for which one... it depends. Amarr wins at level 1 skills, Minmatar wins at level 4, and Gallente takes the cake with the Iteron V at level 5. Transport ships flip this around a bit with Amarr having the highest capacity and Minmatar having the unique ability to fit a probe launcher along with a cloak but sacrificing the ability to fit a packaged cruiser (which is often considered Very Important). Freighters turn this around yet again (but consider cost; this is probably a long-term goal): Caldari have the highest capacity, finally giving them a notch on the proverbial transport stick.
For doing lots of hauling in safe space for a living, Gallente is likely the best option (Iteron Vs really are huge and Obelisks are quite acceptable). |

Thanks for the link and the advice on ships. I hadn't looked at changing my race to get something different, so definitely something to consider.
What is the best way to track what is best to sell? what is the best way to track all this?
I'll start going through a lot of the links to see what I can glean from them.
Again, thanks for the help. |

Do you really have to change race? Can't you just train the other race's ships? |

Yup. I'm assuming he was just talking about cross-training when he said that. I rather enjoy having Gallente Industrial at 5 and all the others at 4 (which opens up any T1 hauler; I can buy the cheapest one that will get the job done no matter where I am). It's somewhat niche, but it's damn convenient.

Honestly? Build a spreadsheet. Start with your local market, hopefully including at least one trade hub but also including some more remote areas (or areas in a different region; variance across regions can be substantial even if it's just a few jumps due to how EVE displays market data).
Throw in buy price and sell price for (at first) a small subset of PI goods. Calculate how much you could make manufacturing some higher end items out of lower end products (remember to include import/export costs and market fees!). And just give it a go. Eventually, expand into other items or other areas. It's a very legitimate way to make money.
Oh, and remember: P0s you extract are not free. Neither are P1s you produce. At each step in the manufacturing process you must include potential sell prices to get your total cost of output. Or at least an accurate total cost. I wouldn't blink at extracting a few items that do well on the market, selling them, buying a completely different set of items, and then building from them to add value before divesting back to the market. |

I'd like to add that orca is a great ship for trading/hauling. Large cargo. Can fit tank and or cloak. You can bring unpackaged ships too. I highly recommend it as a goal for traders. If you end up sick of trade you can always use it for a mining group later too. |
