I'm currently using a Raven for level 4 missions, which works pretty well, but the new Typhoon Fleet Issue caught my eye. The raw damage potential of that ship is rather appealing.
The large increase in DPS for the TFI over the Raven comes from being able to field 5 sentry drones. While I know how sentries work in general, I have no practical experience in using them and there are a few aspects I wonder about:
- Which drones are generally used in missions? Selecting for damage type doesn't seem that useful due to the vastly different optimal range of the drones. The Typhoon also has not enough drone bay to bring a large selection.
- How do I avoid severe tracking problems? Once smaller ships are close to my sentry drones, hitting them is likely problematic.
- I like to always keep moving to mitigate some damage, but with sentries I have to stay close to them in case they're agressed. Do I just orbit my drones?
How do you fly the TFI in missions? Is just entering the mission, deploying drones and start shooting everything a valid tactic, or do I have to use a MJD every time to minimize tracking issues. While I found the MJD to be extremely useful on my Raven for situations where my tank would not be enough otherwise, counting volleys is rather annoying so I'd like to avoid fighting from 100k+ range every time. |

- I use the Sentries according to the range of the mission. It works out quite well with NPC damage types most of the time TBH.
- Garde II's plus one omnidirectional have decent tracking especially with a TP. One of the overlooked aspects of the Omnid is that it also helps non sentry drones. With 3 DDA's and one omni D the stuff that does make it through (usually only elite frigs and spider drones) gets pulverized rather quickly. Tracking is not an issue between sentries and light drones.
- I prefer using an expensive 3 slot tank so I dont really need to orbit the sentries, but yes, this is a viable tactic. Not as good as in a BC or smaller, but still OK. 1. Which drones are generally used varies vastly depending on the mission, generally I match damage types but there are some exceptions, you may want Gardes for Angels if the missions spawns them in close as Bouncers have trouble applying damage to close orbiting BS without any Omnis and this is a general rule of thumb, if the mission is very close range (Damsel in Distress etc) you generally want Gardes for their superior tracking. Sanshas/Blood you almost always want Curators as they have good tracking as well as good optimal AND they deal more damage than Gardes (most of the time) because of resists. Bouncers should also be used for Angels mission where the rats don't spawn so close (Blockade, AE) so you can pick them off at range. Wardens are kind of the black sheep of sentries, pitiful damage as well as horrible tracking, the only time I use them is for long range kinetic based missions against Mordus/Guristas/Serpentis where rats are unlikely to ever enter Garde range. Generally 1 flight of sentries is enough, it's nice to be able to switch mid mission but it's not necessary, just load up the appropriate sentries in station before undocking. It will take awhile to get used to but eventually you'll know which sentries are best without thinking.
2. You avoid tracking problems by using the sentries to pop frigates on the approach while focusing your Cruise damage on Cruisers then BC and finally BS in that order. This is actually a huge improvement over pure missile boats like the Raven since it takes light drones quite abit to completely clear all frigates and you don't want to waste Cruise volleys on them. Being able to just instapop them on the approach with sentries is very very useful.
3. Yeah you have to stay close to your sentries so generally if you need some speed you simply orbit them so you can still recall them easily. However generally with the amount of damage the TFI puts out I rarely need to speed tank, I also shield fit it and generally have no room for a prop so I'm not familiar with this but I have used an Ishtar that orbited its sentries to speed tank and it worked like a charm.
4. Generally you only use MJD if you're having tanking problems and you shouldn't be having tanking problems if you're killing everything fast enough. I've experimented with MJD but I almost never use it nowadays, MWD is superior for gate crawling and most missions don't even require much moving cause you're just sitting on the gate/or its a 1 pocket mission. If you need to gatecrawl just slap an MWD on and forget the MJD. |

I do much as Dato says when using a hyperion, however a hyperion can often work an omni in, and gets more flexibility from gardes as a result.
Berzerkers are also quite usable for angel missions (heavies). A ship that has painters should be able to keep sensibly flown heavies out of aggro.

Fit for angels. With my skills and +3 missile hardwirings it's a cap stable 950 total dps of "warp in, MJD away, Deploy sentries, start FoF missiles, go afk for 4.5 minutes till missiles need restarting" lol. Not much tank, doesn't need tank, tank is MJD+range.
Sentries will attack BS and down, Fof missiles attack nearest targets so yea it wastes dps on frig but meh I can't complain about so little effort lol. I've lost a grand total of 2 sentry drones in 6 weeks of using this thing in missions. This sucker just sweeps up lvl 4 missions.
Just something about making isk for little effort in lvl 4 missions i find appealing :) . |

Now that I'm all grown up and have my t2 cruiser missiles and a few level 5's in my missile supports, I was looking for a TFI fit.. Gotta see if this is any better than an active MJD rattler. Fighting is Magic |

navy raven is better than fleet fyphoon. it has got 3 sentries and 50% missile speed bonus. where typhoon you are only using 1 bonus. |

Curators - Sansha/blood
Gardes - therm/kin
Berserkers - Angels. (( Heavy drones, oh no! ))
Bouncers are mainly for incursions as second set on a RS.
Wardens are a great choice for sniper fits in PvP but lack a lot in the PvE side of things. Can be the best second set if you are in kin heavy null sec area such as Gurista space.

Try them both and see for yourself. You might only be using one bonus but you are using mods to buff your missiles (like the RNI) and triple buff your drones with DPS, range, and tracking.
TFI takes a lot of skill and ISK to fly with top end applicable DPS, but like the RS it really lays it down. Accounts may not be used for business purposes. Hahahaha.
No.
Couple of 5%'ers and the TFI will push over 1500 DPS. something like 1400 to lock range. Raven...pffffffft. Use the raven if you're feeling lazy, use the TFI if you want to concentrate a bit more and reap the rewards.

@OP: IMO, you're wasting the hull unless you 3 slot tank it and bet big on absolute DPS. This thing kills at an utterly obscene rate when fit aggressively.
I dont use it on super long range mission (low max targetting) or missions with loads of travel (although, it's still over 1k DPS without the drones so that's mainly a habit thing). |

So you're saying this ship, moreso than many others, makes fantastic use of the pithum a-type booster? which also happens to be cheaper than its been in awhile? Or a Gist XL, although might have fittings issues. Fighting is Magic |

I think I just use a dread guristas XL. Dirt cheap and tank is something one refreshes at the end of a mission for gates in that boat :) |
