Hi all,
I've just started the game with the 14 day trial and have found Eve's vastness impressive! I love the complexity to the ships and economic model, but also the freedom given players as to the careers they want to choose. AND.. the pretty pretty graphics!
I'm just wondering though, after all the trade runs, mining, agent missions and incidental pvp on the side... what else is there in Eve?
Do you exsist solely to accumulate wealth and ship upgrades, etc.?
Or is there an overall backstory to a pilots career - perhaps some goal the general community is working towards?
I admit i've only seen the first round of Agent Combat missions, but is this the only storyline based element to the PvE aspect of the game? What i'm asking is, would a player join a large corp, for example, to go raid deep into pirate space for special rewards and glory?
Does PvP grant it's own rewards, other than the simple pleasure of accumulating that money through violence?
I hope the intent of my question makes some sort of sense... ie. Though the 'means' in Eve are by far the most intricate and innovative that I have seen in any MMORPG to date, just what 'ends' am I working towards?
Thanks for reading!

Your end is whatever you want your end to be.
Since there is no set profession system at all, you can do whatever you want.
Create a goal, and go for it.

It's all about fun.
Mining is relaxing and a great way to just hang out w yer corpmates. Running missions is great fun and give good ISK in the beginning. Good way to learn flying ships and using modules. PvP is FUNNEH! I've just started and it's cost me loads of isk but it still is FUN. I'm flyin a Merlin atm, upgraded from Griffin...that's how poor I am due to PvP.... Running haulers across 0.0 space is exiting (costly at some points).
As long as you have fun....

One big thing is the correlations, interactions and differences between corps and alliances. You can solo play, but IMHO, joining a corp really opens up the game. And to me, one important thing that I haven't felt as strongly in EVE as in any other MMO, is the feeling that the world really is moving forward. I'm still waiting for a MMO game that will put me in the very center. But since it'll be difficult to have all players in the center, it'll have to be some sort of compromise. As IRL I guess :)

That pretty much covers it. It's all up to you. No hand outs, and noone holding your hand. Just cold harsh space where you can be and do anything you want... gotta love it. Freeform can be a little daunting, and some people can never get to grips with the freedom of action aspect of the game. The way games have developed over the years has conditioned us to expect to follow a linear path, or to have our hands held every step of the way. Take that away, and we suddenly feel a bit lost; adrift in an ocean of possibilities. You decide what your character will be, what he/she will do, and the means of getting there.
Best plan is to develop some short term goals for the character. Develop a career, work on the skills, and join a good corporation with people you get on with. Work out what you like, and plan from there. You can write your own story (start your own corp; see how you can grow it) or you can take part in other people's if they appeal.
There are people trying to establish huge megacorps and industrial powerhouses. There are mercenaries shooting people for money. There are people trying to carve out a piece of space to call their own and building empires. There are people dedicated to fighting those who would claim territory and shut others out. There are criminals and pirates lurking on the fringes of society, preying on the weak, the stupid, or the unlucky. There are people fighting to protect the Amarr Empire from terrorists, and paramilitary abolitionists fighting against slavery. The list goes on. Will you be a cog in some great machine? Or will you rise to the top, command thousands of pilots, and claim huge areas of lawless space as your own?
Or you can just run some missions and do a bit of mining to make some ISK...

I prefer Dark/Light :)
I like PVP - but I prefer to blow up the bad guys
Of course, you can change your standings to make anyone a bad guy :)

It's definitely a game where there is no clearly defined end-game. And that's an amazing strength.
Making scads of money could be your goal. Getting into a battleship could be your goal. Whatever you choose, the best part is that you choose it; the game won't force you down a path, and thus all paths are open to you. :)

EVE = Life.
No other game has taken up so much of my time for the past two years. Because of this, I have no life outside of EVE .....

Eve is an virtual world. A sandbox, if you will.
Just with a lot of people sharing the sand with you. And not all of them play fair :)

Thanks for all the thoughtful replies. It's quite helpful to get a feel for what to expect from the game outside the advertising fluff
I have to admit the open-endedness something i'm probably just not used to. But I suppose i'll give it a whirl for a month and see how I still like it.

For most people, I think it boils down to a few things.
you want to be a player in the mining or manufactureing industry in game.
You want to just solo/Mission till you get tired of it.
You want to be a pirate.
You want to be an anti-pirate(AKA Pirate Hunter)
Or you want to be part of a large corp, helping to defend/impove it's territory.
Those seem to be the main goals of the game.
the solo route seems to be the shorter of them all, as after awhile you'll get bored.
being part of the economy of eve, either by mining or manufactureing will put you into a subculture in the game. This mini world has it's own heros and villians. For some this is a very rewarding part of the game.
others just want to be a pirate YARRR!! They can be either the classic ganker/all or nothing pirate we all hate, or more of a privateer who pirates for the challenge, and money/loot, but who doesn't pod people unless it's warrented. Call them the honorable pirates.
Then theres the person who just wants combat/pvp of the highest quality. they tend to gravitate to the corps that are larger, or always in conflict. They will be the front line defenders/offensive players who help to keep a corp sector safe, or help to expand it.
There is also the person who just wants to run a large, good corp. These are the leaders. jack of all trades, who help keep things together.
And last but not least, there is the "simple" trader. They learn a little of all skills, sometimes more then people think. Part leader, part manufacturer, part miner, part fighter. They do a little bit of everything in their goal of accumulateing wealth. These are the guys you see out in the middle of 0.0 spare in that monstrous ship, trying to sneak around your flotilla of ships to get to that ONE station where his monstrous hold of cargo with net him an ENORMOUS profit. These are people who take risks. Crazy buggers, but they do it. sometimes
pick your role. most of us dont' know what we want to do initially. So just setyourself up for general use, and you can specialize when you find your niche. - - - - Q: Can I change skills without logging in or Que skills? A: no. to both. End of story.
Q: Wheres the Search button on the forums? A: There isn't one. go here. www.eve-search.com |

Eve is an experiment. what happens if u bring 20k white mice into the same box? what do they do. you can be the white mouse, or the black one, or the wolf that hides under a white one. eve has the highest variety of possible actions i have ever seen in a game. and the most complex structure to play with. that's what makes it interessting.
