I am only a couple weeks into the game but I have spent the last few days trying to come up with a ship to fly (or at least a race to begin with). I have basically decided that I'm going to work my way up to a dominix. My goal at first was simply to get into a ship so I could grind out standings for jita in order to trade til my heart's content.
I have 2 questions:
Which skills would it be good to focus on other than drones (armor vs shield. Hybrid vs projectile. etc. etc. ) I have read that gallente ships do well with armor tanks though I am not sure why. Have also read that with a dominix the guns aren't really important.
And..
At first I had planned to simply get this char into a ship to get jita's standings up and then leave him docked there to trade away. I am know beginning to think it may not be a bad idea to train the trade skills that allow u to access markets at a distance. Thinking I could sit semi afk in a dominix while I make trades from the market screen. Is this at all a good idea? Or should I go with the original route of just making this guy my trade alt? |

To your first question a Domi is generally armor tanked but it can be both. The rule of thumb is if it has more low slots it's armor and more mid slots is shield. It has no bonuses to guns so you can add DPS with guns they aren't required IMO. My first Dominix had no guns because although I had max drone skills I had no gunnery skill. Look at the "Core Competency" and "Armor Tanking" certificates. They will give you an idea of skills needed.
You won't be able to AFK anymore because NPC rats will kill your drones. This was changed a few patches back (Can't remember when)
As to the whole trade alt idea I have no clue because I've never done that. |

This is true but without magstabs you get less than 200 gun DPS. The NPC's seemed to enjoy attacking my drones either way. Maybe they just didn't like me |

With a perfect Map, and +5 implants it takes 111 days to train all the trade skills to 5 (Not including Social 5 or Cyber 5). If your making a trade alt and will never use the DPS ship again, then you might want to fleet up and have a friend that can grind standings for you, (You accept and he completes). A few days of grinding missions should get you the standings you need for a market alt, and not have a month of wasted training.
Alternately you can use a second account for the entire process, and have one mission runner and one Market alt.

I believe you can find someone to do this via the Pro Synergy channel in-game. Fighting is Magic |

Thanks for the help guys! I like the fitting that you posted Ilshira, really ought to save me some skill points not having to beef up my gun skills. Ill have to look into the micro jump drive as im rather clueless to what they are. And the advice in ur first post really helps. I had ignored the core competency cerftificates as i thought they were going to tell me to train a bunch of unnecessary things(turns out i was totally wrong from what i just looked up)
I plan on gettings implants asap... have been fairly afraid of getting podded but am starting to feel more comfortable and i still stick only to highsec.
That seems like a really good idea getting someone to grind the standings for me. and no i do not have any friends.. who play this game haha. sides a buddy who started the same time as me.
Im guessing someone would have suggested this but is it possible for me to fleet up with my own alt and grind his standings? (2 chars on the same account/computer?) |

4x DDA II is 1019 dps for this character with 5x350mm II at antimatter ranges. 3x DDA II and 1 faction magstab for me is 1026.
Not that I care about the *difference* at all but it certainly doesn't cost you anything to switch the last DDA II, and it does help bias the domi to holding agro, because that's a lot more gun dps - ie at that point the domi itself is beginning to deal a lot more dps than the surrounding 5 entities (the drones).
In any case the guns routinely save me having to convince the drones to lock individual frigates (~2 seconds), and waste entire drone sized salvoes on frigates which is almost entirely overkill. A pack at 60km, I wiil usually not be required to fire drones at frigates at all.
(yes its amusing how reversed that is from the conventional wisdom of a rattlesnake pilot).

2 accounts on one computer, Yes you can. 2 Characters on one account, No you can't. (You can only log in one Character from an account at a time, though you can train more than one by adding a PLEX to your account)

If its on the one account, you will typically have to invest some SP in the alt (so that you can trigger at least level 2 missions on the alt) and locate it at a hub with several agents, collect up a bunch of mission gate BMs with your pod or a shuttle, and contract them over to your main to do the missions. Pod will let you collect an open area BM without aggro, but shouldn't really matter whether you use a shuttle.
alternatively run some mission at the most profitable location on your main, then buy standings from mission runners for your alt.
1500 isk/lp will get you sellers for navy LP, but probably won't get you sellers for sisters LP.

Awesome... had no idea of how alts and other accounts worked.
Though im sure itll be a few months off im already thinking about getting another account. Seems like it could really come in handy. Im guess lp is loyalty points... def seems too expensive for me at the moment and prolly for a little while... tryin to hoard as much isk as possible to try and do something with it once i get everything settled.
Thanks a ton for all the advice! |

Evemon and EFT are your friends. Make a skill plan in Evemon. As a poster above stated many that offer to "help" only want to kill you so be careful!
The MJD doesn't require much training. It jumps you 100km in the direction you're traveling. For some NPC rats this will significantly reduce your incoming DPS. This allows you to focus on your damage rather than tank.
The person that advised to have someone grind standings for you had a good idea if you're not at all interested in running missions. I can't imagine how boring trade would be in Eve but to each his own. |

Won't tank much, even with good skills. That 3 Slot T2 Tank will not last any heavy mission. MJD Fittings are only good if you really know what you're doing. I recommend starting safe. Since the Domi is very slow, you really won't like cruising 40km without any propulsion.

It doesn't need the tank because you'll be 100km away. At this range not much with turrets will hit you. Nothing can scram you and the Dominix will instapop frigates from range.
If you have missiles coming at you just replace one of the DDA with a hardener.
If you want in your face damage go with the Navy Dominix. It has more tank and the 25% bonus to turret DPS makes fitting guns worth it.
Nothing wrong with your fit though. I used a similar fit with an extra DDA and a AB instead of a MWD. I just like using the Dominix's range bonus to my advantage.

I have begun to train up for some minmitar ships. Think im gonna head toward projectiles as a main focus. The drone skills required seem pretty intense and after playing a vexor for a while, I dont believe I would enjoy the drones as my main focus as much as the guns.
Thanks so much for all the input guys. it really is all so helpful. It seems like everytime i read a post theres something completely new to learn about the game. You guys are so great on these forums, cant that you enough |

Minmatar is a good choice. The Maelstrom is a beast! Don't forget you'll still want decent drone skills and T2 light drones to kill frigates warp scramming you. |

Minmatar is nice, Drones are necessary anyway, like IIshira said. Gallente as a starter isn't bad, but do as you wish.
I'd recommend going for Autocannons first, because later, you will eventually find yourself sitting in a Vargur or Machariel, which are great with ACs. Also go for shieldtank then. It will take you at least half a year to get into a BS, so dont hurry or you will be very dissapointed with the performance of your ship. Fast level 3s will net more ISk than very slow l4s.
Drones up to medium at least all 4-5 is recommended, or it will take forever to kill elite frigs. |

If it's standings you need do the Data Centre missions then some COSMOS missions.
By far the quickest route to decent standings. |
