I'm aware of being able to view a 2d representation of solar systems in the game, but is there a way to view a 3D solar system map or is the only way to be in the system?
thanks |

The in-game map is in 3D. You need to click "unflatten map" in the map control panel if you turned it to 2D mode. |

For the universe map (showing constellations, regions, statistics etc.), by clicking "flatten" / "unflatten" you can view the universe representation in 2d or 3d. The solar system map (used for probe scanning etc.) will always be in 3d. There is a side-panel for the in-game HUD (usually mapped to either F11/F12 I think) that shows a 2d representation of the region, constellation, and solar system you are currently in, but this is not usually of any practical use. |

As far as I'm aware, no, there's no way to see the 3d map for a system you're not in. Steve Ronuken for CSM 9! http://www.fuzzwork.co.uk/ Twitter: @fuzzysteve on Twitter |

The 2d map IS useful if you are d-scanning for targets as it shows you your d-scans viewing cone and distance. This can help greatly in wormholes to narrow down a targets location prior to dropping combat probes. After all, the longer you have combat probes out the more likely they are to spot them and bug out.

Thanks - and sorry I've not replied sooner - RL busy!
Reason for asking is to plan travel through null sec - wanting to get an idea of approach lines to gates when traveling through systems for the first time and hence no bookmarks at teh exit gates. |

The only time I use the system map other than doing exploration is when making safe spots.
For traveling through Null sec systems, don't warp from gate straight to next gate enroute. Warp Disruption Fields (Warp Bubbles) are usually set up in line between and/or around/near gates. It's a good idea to warp to range (70km, 100km, etc.) towards a random celestial object first such as a Planet, Star, Asteroid Belt, etc., before warping to the gate. Don't use Moons for the random celestial object since those will have an active POS anchored at them which is usually hostile.
After jumping through a gate and you see Warp Bubbles near you, look for a Planet, Star or Asteroid Belt icon that doesn't have the bubbles anchored between your ship and them. Select one of them and warp to 100km, then warp to the next gate enroute.
If the situation goes from bad to worse and you see a lot of Bubbles and players in the system, quickly set up a safe spot and log out. Nullified T3 Cruisers or Interceptors are immune to anchored Warp Bubbles and will travel right through them.
A cloaking module will definitely help provide more safety, especially when used with safe spots. Always check Star Map statistics first (Active ships, Ship kills, Pod kills, etc) before traveling and try to plot alternate routes to bypass active systems.
Good luck to you.

Hmm. I may be able to put something together using webgl.
Scaling is the problem, of course. I'll probably just scale all objects to the same size (as otherwise it'll just be crazy scaling. planets are tiny compared to stars) Steve Ronuken for CSM 9! http://www.fuzzwork.co.uk/ Twitter: @fuzzysteve on Twitter |
