Fraps or Bandicam. Bandicam will compress the file, so will be a great choice if HDD space is a problem. However I dont know if it stress your computer more. One Man Crew - The official Brining Solo Back contest

Bandicam will compress the file, so will be a great choice if HDD space is a problem. However I dont know if it stress your computer more. Another relatively new option is Dxtory (which TotalBiscuit says is superior).
I'll just make a quick overview.
Fraps http://www.fraps.com/ $37 You only get to use the one codec (at least when I last used it). You can pick a framerate, but that's it. Compression is very low, which means that it won't be too taxing on your CPU, but files will be HUGE, as in several GB for a few minutes of recording at 1080p, which means a lot of disk IO as well. Strongly recommend you record to a different hard drive than the one you keep your game files on, since loading resources from the disk (loading times) will be significantly slowed down if your disk can't keep up.
Another thing about the Fraps codec is that the video looks incredibly dark compared to the actual gameplay IMO. I believe most people tend to brighten it up afterwards in an editor, but that would mean loss of quality.
Bandicam http://www.bandicam.com/ $39 You get to pick from a bunch of different codecs and quality settings, as well as use any 3rd party codec you'd like. Most of the standard codecs use significant compression, which means that files will be smaller without sacrificing quality at max settings. This also means that it will be more taxing on your CPU, but your hard drive will thank you.
I'd recommend using MJPEG at maybe 80-90q, for a good balance between quality and file size. There's also YV12 and RGB24 which are lossless, meaning quality should be perfect quality and won't tax your CPU much since very little compression, but we're talking file sizes that are much larger (about Fraps sizes). External codecs worth mentioning is x264, which will give you some really good quality at a very tiny file size, but will be extremely taxing on your CPU. There's also Lagarith, which is a good contender with MJPEG, sacrificing some file size for better quality. http://www.bandicam.com/support/tips/best-codec/
I personally much prefer Bandicam to Fraps, but it takes a bit of research and trial and error to find the right settings.
Dxstory About $34 http://exkode.com/dxtory-features-en.html Haven't tried it yet, but as I said above, the mighty TB prefers it so it much be the best... right?
I think the main benefit with Dxtory is that you can record in 30fps while still viewing the game in fulll. Fraps and Bandicam will both lock your fps to whatever recording fps you have set.
Dxstory, like Bandicam also lets you customize your settings and use different codecs and even external ones.
Your best bet is to look around for comparisons, reviews, and try them for yourself and see which one works best for your setup, they all have limited free versions.

http://obsproject.com/ You can select local output instead of streaming in the options. It encodes on the fly though, so you will need to have a good CPU and play around with the settings a bit.
Edit: for local recording, try these settings: http://obsproject.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2972 |

I love you guys!!
Now about fraps, I have a licence but I don't know what would be the best setting for recording, so I ask you what would be the best tradeoff for the fps setting? I know that 60fps will create very large files so I would have to compress them later, which is the least of my concerns.
And one other thing, is it okay if I would ditch the sound recording or would I have to keep that in too? signature |

I spoke with Daneel Trevize yesterday and we discussed settings for recordings. He made a fair point about FPS: You dont need a high fps since the fight will most likely be edited to a higher speed in the video and in eve there aren't really that many fast movements so you wouldn't really notice a lower fps. So 30fps would be perfectly fine.
But more info about recording will come soon.
As for the sound. It will not really play an important role, but in my opinion, it can be nice to have. However we are not gonna force people to include it as I know there are people who plays without sound and the video will have music anyways. One Man Crew - The official Bringing Solo Back contest

So 30fps would be perfectly fine. Also youtube will limit the fps to 30 anyway. There are a few advantages to recording higher though, like if you want to do some nice slow motion :) Fraps will also limit your fps to whatever you're recording at so if you want to play at 60fps you'll have to record at 60, at least I'm pretty sure about that. It isn't, it is just that I would be missing 58 pixels 'down' and on a 24 inch screen at 1920x1200 16:10 screen, you can see a difference, that's all.
But don't you worry, I'll have fraps record at 16:9. signature |

I was going to say "**** yeah!" as I mostly do solo PVP...but then I read that frigates were excluded. Is there any valid reason for that?
I recently had some fight 1vs3, 1vs4 and more, and they were pretty epic. You have to deal with the ewar, the drones, the targets, pilot manually...also, you talk about showing this to new pilot. What a better ship than a frigate to start this game?
Please reconsider this, and I'll gladly be part of it

Frigate & Destroyer videos have been thoroughly explored lately, and that is great. Some really nice videos.
This particular project will focus more on the Cruiser+ hulls, but in no way do we think any less of Frig PvP. In fact I have great respect for pilots who truly enjoy it, and I have flown with pilots that learned a great deal from it, and ended up learning a lot from them and their experience.
There is an invitation here for pilots who are used to only practice frig/dessie PvP to try something a bit different for a while. To undock a couple fo Cruisers, give it a shot. All you got to lose is a bit of ISK, and a lot more to gain, even if its just a new experience.
That being said, I have seen some pretty amazing frig and destroyer fights here and there. I've seen the Thrasher pull some unbelievable stunts, e.g. Arty-Thrasher killing a couple of frigs then a cruiser and a BC. So as I wrote, if you frig/dessie fight has some really special 'extra' edge to it, we will definitely check it out.
On this same note it will be nice to say that this 'extra edge' applies to any fight in any hull. Every now and then, every pilot that flies small gang or solo gets an incredible fight. All the pieces come together, and afterwards you look at the whole picture in a kind of awe. You were so in the zone. The decisions you made on instinct were spot on.
Kovorix for example always manages to find such situations where the bigger picture feels special. Fights that have a special edge to them. If you take another look at his video Everlasting II, the fight that starts at 9 minutes into the video, is basically a solo story that is being told. And I find it amazing (btw he does it all without links or implants).
So if you are going to try and record a fight for this project. I invite you to record endlessly. Don't hold back. So when your instinct tell you that something is happening here, you're fishing for a fight, you're warping around system, landing on grid with this or that ship, playing cat and mouse games, separating the enemy gang. Feel free to hit that record button from the get go. If nothing comes out of it you can always go to your fraps folder and delete everything later right? But if your instinct were right and you end up recording a whole 10min story that ended in... say.... your Vagabond killing a Drake and Rupture... But all you got recorded is the actual fight, it may not seem that impressive. But if we could see all that you went thought in that 5min previous to the fight, maybe we'd see that you exhausted the enemy gang, your drove them crazy, planet to planet to moon, separating and killing the interceptor there at moon 8, making the hurricane aggress you on the gate, jumped with the Rupture, killed the rupture on the other side, the Drake jumps into you together with the Cane, Cane aggresses again and you jump again with the Drake, kill the Drake, and the Hurricane is already not wanting to engage you at that point.
Isn't that better than what seems like a recorded kill of a separate lone Rupture, then a separate lone Drake. When it actually was so much more?
Don't be afraid to submit a recorded story. Compress it to mp4 in the settings that we'll post here soon (with freeware software), so a 15min video can take only 300mb space and look great, don't worry about those things. Just recdord :-) An interesting article about Solo PvP: http://themittani.com/features/new-eden-solo |
