I love EVE, but my girlfriend does'nt and I am usually online while she is in the room with me as we live in a small house. I really want to be able to PVP but my options seem to be hindered by the fact that i cannot use a mic for voice coms.
I am able to hear the commands that FC's would give out and most videos i watch on youtube, you generally only hear the FC and maybe 2 or 3 others.
Is eve just totally biased towards using voice coms now?
I would love to be able to PVP but are there any corps that are happy just to have a "listener" in their ranks? I always try to be active in the text chat and i am not anti-social, its just having to talk while playing the game interferes with real life issues. (Such as the wife not being able to hear Eastenders)
I hope there are some corps who are not so strict about voice coms otherwise I would sadly have to rethink about subscribing to the game any longer because mining, industry and missions bore the life out of me. |

Unless your the FC or some other important person to the fleet (scout, skirmisher, target caller) then listening on comms is just fine. Most 'grunt' communication during fleets is in fleet chat when you have time or using tye broadcast system.
So using voice comms for PvP is a must. Being able to speak, only in positions that really require you to speak.
Most corps dont mind a listener at all, for said reason given by you, the leadership is giving the orders.
Keep in mind though, if a corp is very active on comms outside PvP and you are the only one who isnt speaking but just listening, the chat might not be looked at all times (because most people talk to each other), if that happens, try to get the attention of one of the persons in the comms convo to make him and the others aware that you are typing. Pretty much what J'Poll said.
You may occasionally have to say something, "point on (ship name)" or alert your fleet if you spot something they havent, but many FCs/corps would be content with you simply listening and following commands.
Another option of course is solo-pvp ^_^ |

Sent you a message, I am in a similar situation and there are options there trust me, especially low sec is fun and fights can be found very quickly for those who can't commit great deals of time in one session or if you get interrupted easily. I disagree |

Use a headset. I've met more than a few people who never talked... but were able to listen to what was happening and quickly relay their actions though simple and quick text alone.
It's certainly possible to play the game without ever talking... just expect a little bit of ridicule and roll with it. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

When I had corp members they had the same issue.
They would listen on comms with a headset and we had a prearranged thing in fleet chat to confirm they got the order and attending to it. In my case they would just type "cf" or "ack" in fleet chat to let me know they acknowledge.

I have the same issue, and I think a lot of us UK guys have this issue because home space is a luxury here and we usually share that space with others. I get a lot of negative responses from guys in the US who don't understand why I can't always use comms. My best advice is to fleet up with UK TZ members, who will be able to understand and sympathize a little better. |

Because in a house you share.. TV trumps all other for attention so it gets noise priority.
I have a gaming room so I don't have that issue but many don't. A lot of people have their computers in the same space or area as their TV lounge. So.... TV > Computer.
I get the feeling to many basement dwellers or single guys are posting their opinions here. I would say the size of the group you want to join will make a difference. If you are regularly running in ~10man gangs, your silence might make a more noticible hole than in 40-50man gangs, when quite frankly, most FC's will be happy to have a few guys who aren't constantly cluttering the voice channels.
Sure, there is the chance you might draw the attention of the groups spy-sniffer (spies rarely talk on comms they are spying on due to the potential of screwing up their push-to-talk and relaying their information on to the wrong comms - I have actually been in a fleet when a spy accidentally relayed what we were doing to us thinking he was relaying to our enemies - pretty hilarious!), but if you are active on the groups other medias (fleet chat channels, forums), that isn't going to really matter.
I rarely speak on comms (barring the times I've screwed something up spectacularly, and the FC needs to know!), and I've been part of my group for years, its not a real problem. |

I guess I'm far enough away where this isn't an issue. I'm in the same room but across the room.
I talk and sometimes she asks if I'm talking to her, but besides that, no issues with the headset.
Listening on comms is better than being absent from comms as far as I can tell. |

Arrange some "eve time" at the cheapest motel room in town and really dig into the reasons WHY voice comms are preferred.
Possibly leave the motel receipt laying around somewhere back at the house - by the time you discover she found it you may not have to worry about the "live-in" gf situation anymore
Is it possible at all for the gf to join you, at the very least, as a passive mission runner with a dash of trading and a pinch of mining? She would be an excellent support staff member in-game, as well as out.
