allowing change of the sound volume would that be a lag factor - something they would need to consider before changing it i reckon

I go without sound myself, no real need.
I actually hate all sorts of loud sounds and prefer quietness, exept while driving. Try wandering through the tundra of Greenland and through the terminal at any bussy airport afterwards and you learn to appreciate quietness.

Originally by: Captain Tightpants I'd like a rather more high tech sound. Less of the WHSSNSHSHSSHRRHRHRHHTHTHRHR and more of the HMMMMVVVWWWEEEEEEEEEE *poink*.
Oh, and for those of you who want game sounds but not the warp sound, there's a simple solution.
Don't use warp.

Well I for one love the big bass boom that going into Warp Drive proper gives. Wouldn't want it changed for the world.
Unless I am mistaken the warp drive sound is taken from fast jets? I remember playing after going to Fairford and the sound is very similar to a low pass by something like a Tornado or Mirage :)

Ok, odd you guys should of brought this up, i was messing round with it all at the weekend, i found some bab5 and STNG sounds to replace it with. It seems CCP no longer use the original method of playing warp sounds and use code to chose "areas" within the single 25sec sound file. Kinda messy tbh, but i think i was able to make it 99% successful. Anyway, point being, if anyone wants an edited version of the original sound, i can easily soften it off and normalise the volume with the other game sounds whilst still keeping the boom in place (choice) I'm at work right now, but i could whip thise up in, hmm, around 7-8 hours time with some really easy instructions for people to install them (no permanent changes made)
Anyone interested?

The primary reason sound isn't so important in eve is there's very few sound triggers that signify events happening in game which we respond to faster as human beings, compared to more fps style mmos where the certain sound a weapon makes as it comes in for a certain blow even if you have your back turned to the person you know its coming and have a pritty good idea what to do about it.
Eve doesn't really have this with weapons, theres the generic sort of weapon hit sound (note i didn't say weapon firing sound but firing sounds are usually only heard by the player firing thus aren't a trigger). But prior to that you tend to be more alert to the targeting cycle sound, couple of eve-radio sound bytes with that sound in have made me drop into combat mode more than once. And the gate cycle sound of someone jumping through it, though usually its kinda hard to miss the associated visual ques, this is of most use to campers. If you took out the incoming jumpgate pulse and sound you'd be suprised how survivability at gates increases.

OK Call Me Crazy But I like the Sound (not Music Music is OK but I like my stuff better).
But I want More of it. I want to hear the hum of my ship. When I hit AB I want to here the extra Whoooshe Saturn 5 Kick in the A$$ Burst! There could be more audio ques (and Auras voice. But I hear that some folks have lag withthe sound. (I have tried it both on and off and noticed no difference so I wouldn't know.

Originally by: Alexis DeTocqueville Too late, Winterblink, you insulted their God, their mighty infallible Prime Fiction. For you there will be no mercy, and no logical rational explanation will take away their self-righteous indignation..."WHAT, HOMG, HOW DARE U HAVE A DIFFERENT OPINION OF THE EVE UNIVERSE!!111"
All right, steady on. Seems to be you who's rushing in here. The fact is that the "there's no sound in space" thing comes up about forty times a day in the various forums and chat channels, and is explainable in one of two ways: A) sound is simulated by the pod, or B) it's a game - it has warp drives that let you fly through planets, so if we accept that huge gaping hole in the laws of physics, why worry about trivial ones like sound transmission? We could spend all day on the various physical errors in EVE, if we wanted to: orbital objects don't orbit; there's no real visual distortion while you're travelling faster than light; you can travel faster than light; ships have to keep thrusting to keep a steady speed, and slow down if thrust is reduced - and so on. But generally we seem to just accept these as the way the game is written and don't worry about them too much - in my experience there aren't nearly the amount of discussions devoted to these things. But sound? Sound does seem to be a particular issue for some people.
Besides that, a lot of the sound effects in EVE relate to things happening on or to your ship: your ship firing, your ship being hit, your ship warping, your computer locking targets, and so on. All of these effects would be audible in space as the sound would propagate through the hull of your ship and the air inside it. Only relatively few sounds - enemy shots that miss, distant combat/explosions, etc - would be inaudible anyway.
Incidentally, for the sake of the thread, I love the warp effects. |
