Hi folks
I'd like to give my view on the new ISIS ship tree user interface. This is for two reasons: first, for CCP this may be a Guinea pig for future UI revisions, and second because the UI is actually my main gripe with EVE: to me it looks dated, presents information in the most drab way possible and worst of all uses slow and error-prone interaction patterns like e.g. right click & menu selection for critical functions in flight and combat.
My background: I'm pretty new to EVE, play for less than 4 months and already have 4 accounts, so the EVE bug has bitten me hard - and I care!
ISIS screen
So, about ISIS: at first look in-game I immediately thought "ooh, shiny!", followed after a few seconds by disappointment that I could not see all of the ships because some EVE windows were overlaying the tree and partially disabled mouse-overs. A possible quick fix would be to have a "hide windows"/"show windows" toggle, but I hope CCP have a secret plan how to handle the conflicting paradigms of full-screen UI as in ISIS or the star map on one hand and the movable/resizable table view window mess that is the major UI approach for the rest of EVE.
The overall graphics with the cold blue science fiction look are a huge improvement over almost anything else in EVE. Personally I would like an even more minimalistic and less SF-cliche look, but I can definitely live with this. Finally something that looks like something from the future.
Information display
The pop-up windows that display ship & skill information are really a joy to use. The use of color and bold text make them so much more easy to read and pleasing to the eye. For me this is the biggest improvement in ISIS. Please, please do this to all the information text in EVE!
I especially like the "unlock skills" displayed for the ship branches, to get that information required a lot of clicking before. My main criticism would be that there are probably too many icons that are difficult to understand without the text mouse-over and some icons seem to emphasize "looks" over clarity. E.g. the mastery level icons (II) would be much clearer without the additional growing "laurel wreath" around them.
The traditional "show info" window has been clearly improved as well, but only on the "inside", the tabs and window chrome feel a bit out of place now.
On my 27" 2560x1440 screen some of the text is a bit small relative to the copious white space and I really hope CCP will take even higher screen resolutions into account and adapt the graphics accordingly.
Conclusion ISIS is a very promising step in the right direction. It is also "tacked on" the old UI - with the cracks clearly showing. Even just using the new graphical style consistently in all of EVE would be a very good step, I hope CCP has the resources - and guts - to go even further and revise some of the interaction methods. Although I am sure many vets will curse and cry about "dumbing down" the game and announce to rage-quit, it will make the game more attractive and enjoyable and EVE is really to good a game to be held down by a 90s UI.

Only problem i have with it is that its driving my OCD crazy! They all have to be gold!
But, so far it seems pretty nice, and hopefully it will also help younger players understand what is needed to be efficient with the ships they are looking at instead of just saying "THAT ONE!" and train straight into a the biggest ship they can find skipping the support skills thinking they will kick ass without them. Here are some things that may help you, O'b Haru Sen.
If you're piloting your ship via right clicks, you're doing it wrong. You should be using hotkeys and various overview tabs. This will remove the imprecision you are experiencing. Other things that use the right click menu (such as industrial tasks) do so for the sake of efficiency.
Press the "tab" button. That is your, "'hide windows"/"show windows toggle'".
Your text vs whitespace issue could be fixed with the UI scaling option. You will find it under the "Display" column in the escape menu.

That is actually funny as the first thing that comes to my mind when I read ISIS is some syrian "liberation" (read: terrorist) group that likes to cut of heads (and other body parts) of unbelievers....

There is a hide all windows hot key. I think it's control tab and then navigate to the hide windows icon. It's more like minimise than hide, but meh. Also, you can hide all the UI with Cntl F9. "In the age of information, ignorance is a choice." |

Shucks, I have been piloting my ships wrong for almost 8 years. Woe is me. Maybe I should give all my stuff away, and biomass my characters as I have been piloting my ships wrong for so many years. *removed inappropriate signature* - CCP Eterne |

The Shift-F9 toggle, it does get rather clunky if you need to do it EVERYTIME, I can agree on that ... plus it doesn't quite work for PI stuffs. The ISIS is similar to World Map and I dare say most players wouldn't bother to minimize when they go about doing their stuffs. It sticks out for ISIS because the scrolling is rather limited that it's hard to navigate without encountering blocks, they need fix this. Imo, it wouldn't hurt to have a user button for ISIS and World Map for a player to press that toggles the Shift-F9 on/off. This is a lot more intuitive than a hidden shortcut.

As a player of a little over two months I was pretty excited to see what CCP would do to spice up the certificate feature of the game.
Yea...
ISIS is just annoying because it's like the map as it takes up your whole background and you have to jump back and forth between windows. At least with the certificate planner I could rock split screen or just click back and forth between overlapping windows.
I also understand that they're quite pointless, but the "Basic-Standard-Improved-Elite" certificate rankings were much more streamlined than these "Mastery" levels.
And I miss the skill tree.
Damn. My first EVE expansion and I'm already not loving the very thing I thought I'd love!
EDIT: Agreed about how the Roman numerals look. |
