I've seen a few mentions to the Rules of the Asteroid Belts in passing, but nothing very concrete. What are they? Are they listed anywhere that I can see them? ~The prophecy comes true. |

I've been playing for almost 2.5 years and I've never heard of any rules about asteroid belt rules.
There are only two things I can think about is that it's generally rude to mine rocks that someone else is already mining and that if someone's chaining belts in a system, it's better to continue chaining.
Where are you hearing about this? |

Seems like something miners use, so I'm not an expert. That said it's propably just info about when it was created in EVE time and a possible tag for easy identification of containers belonging to your fleet. It helps people doing the hauling and lets them see what they need to haul first and what can wait. I'd wait for an answer from someone who actually does this though, since it might serve some purpose that is not immediately obvious to someone who doesn't do it. |

Yeah, when you're jetcanning it is common convention to name the can with the time (in Eve time, see the bottom-left of your screen) that the can was created.
This is because jetcans will despawn after 2h or so. If someone is hauling, it's nice to know what stuff to haul first (and it helps you keep your own cans straight if you're solo, since only your latest one will have any room in it and you know you need to haul when your cans are getting too old). |

When I was with the army we had that stuff too. The new radio operators where send to get blue frequency water (blue, not red). The mechanics where sent to get a set of click-plates for torque spanner. Alternatively they had to go and fetch a joint-hammer for hitting things around a corner. |

Some miners are terribly possessive of "their" rocks. According to their rules, if they have anchored a can within 15km of an asteroid, that asteroid is "theirs".
These rules can be safely ignored, since these people would prefer to spin their ships endlessly in station while crying into their apple juice, rather than wardec or suicide gank an intruder. That's a terrible thing for me to say, I know, but it reflects my frustration at the number of people who display a feeling of entitlement along the lines of "I mined that asteroid yesterday, so it must be mine today." These are the types of people who are most disturbed when someone moves their cheese.
In fact, I'd go so far as to deliberately mine the rocks out from under them just to make the point: none owns asteroids. The only stuff you are in control of is the ore in your cargo hold. Mining is a PvP activity too.
Apologies for the rant.

There is no real rules around asteroid belts or mining but there is a lot of "unwritten" rules going around.
I will try and list the few i remember.
If someone else is mining in the belt (this is for systems that is not that populated) you find another belt and mine that.
If someone else is mining and you notice a lot of rat wrecks around them dont just salvage them,be polite and ask if its ok.
If you have to mine the same belt as someone else go to the other side of the belt.
If you get can flipped warn people in local that a can flipper is around.
More or less the rules are just around being polite to other players, and miners. If you mine right next to someone else they will think you are trying to push them out of the belt,or just attempting to be annoying. If your in a frig and ninja mining they will wonder if you are looking to can flip them.
Also skip on the whole saying this is 'MY' belt. Most miners wont do this and it will make you look bad if you do and if your a miner you will want to stay friendly with your locals. For secure cans and so on.. Its ok to use them but some people will find it rather nanoying if you anchor 50 in the same belt kind of thing.
Hope this can help you |

Mine whatever the hell rocks you want and if someone gives you crap over it tell them to go cram a GSC up their ass, 99% of the time they will neither have the will nor capability to do anything about whatever behaviour of yours they disapprove of. Additionally train up some combat skills and when someone gives you crap about mining their precious asteroids or whatever declare war on them and take them to school.
Mine without being a carebear. |

I've been a miner / industrialist for about 2.5 years now (2009-02-23).
There is one general rule in EVE: don't make people angry at you if you cannot deal with the consequences.
Of course, you can still expect to get a random wardec just because it was your turn. It helps to have some skill in a battlecruiser as well as a Hulk. |

the only "unofficial" rules ive heard of regarding mining in belts was
1. if u warped into a belt and someone not in your corp or alliances is already mining there you move on to the next belt.
2. Always be aligned out incase a goon comes to gank u
3. Cycle your cans before the 2hr timer pops Everytime you buy something that says "made in china" you are helping the rising unemployment in your own country unless your from china, Buy locally produced goods and help create more jobs. |

By using commong rules agreed on in the corp, it is a lot easier for everyone to know whose cans are where. In my corp, we typically name them "Full", "Take this" or "Eat this", when our Cargo Containers are filled, and until then, name them "Anshio - 9:08" when the can is made, so the Orca can see who made the cans, and when. If several people use the same cans, they just write every user's name in instead of just who made the can. |

I must take a little blame for the OP's confusion.
She may be referring to the "Asteroid Belt Code" which is part of my "Belt Police" schtick when I do bad things to jet-canning miners. It's not a CCP rule. Nor is it some collective miner rule. Just some fluff I use to make what I do a little more interesting, if only to me. :P
But the underlying "rule" I use it for does have some value. Dumping ore into unsecure and unprotected cans is usually a good way to draw unwanted attention. I don't recall you doing it the time we ran into one another. [My logs just show you asking about it in local conversation after I "impounded" someone else's improperly stored ore.] If you do, I would look at options ranging from secure cans to alt accounts with haulers to mining with friends.
Fly safe and happy mining. o/

Mine whatever the hell you want wherever you want (just be prepared for the consequences).
Don't EVER can-mine. It's like putting a big "**** with me" sign on your back. I blew up an Osprey that was can-mining the other day, didn't lose my gank Thrasher, and made off with some sweet T2 loot (might resurrect my mining Domi if I get enough loot...)
If you MUST can-mine, don't bother renaming the cans, it just makes it even more obvious that you are can-mining on d-scan. There's a notepad in the EVE client you can use to keep track of the time when you dropped it.
If you MUST can-mine, have a hauler sitting on top of it and leave a single unit of ore in the can to keep it "alive".
If you get can-flipped, it was your own damn fault for can-mining. Telling local just points out that you were an idiot.
If you get can-flipped, it was your own damn fault; you should train Anchoring to I and get a couple of GSCs.
If someone leaves a bunch of wrecks lying around salvage them if you want to; it's p obvious they didn't want them. Just don't take the loot unless you're ready for the consequences.
Lastly, while politeness is generally a good thing, competition, even in mining, is the meat and bread of this game. Leaves only the fresh scent of pine. |

Talk about bad advice....
By all means can mine. Can mining is more efficient and generally safer for the solo player. Your typical miner puts cargo expanders and equivalent rigs on his ship which makes him very susceptible to suiciding -- he then goes and mines in a high traffic area with a whole bunch of other folk, which of course makes him the natural target of a suicider.
If you can mine you can actually tank your hulk/retriever, and thus be relatively safe against your general run of the mill suicider. But what about those pesky can flippers? Easy - to safely can mine -- you must do two things -- 1) mine in a system that is off the main trade routes; 2) ignore folk that want can flip you.
If you are in an out of the way system -- you will find that you are rarely can flipped (for that matter you will be rarely suicided) --- if you ignore the flipper, they will get bored and move along. Thus, by going to an out of the way system you will only very rarely lose a can, instead of your whole ship.
Now there are folk that will tell you that by tanking your ship you reduce its mining efficiency, and that if you are a dedicated miner you can make enough isk to counter the occasional suicide run. Personally, I doubt it. But so what. By properly tanking your ship -- you get to mine that most precious of commodities -- the tears of failed suiciders. Nothing better then when you see that km showing the hulk blowing up a tempest. |
