My starting system was Cistuvaert, and I've been using that for my base of operations kind of by default. I'm starting to accumulate a large amount of items in my hanger there, and it occured to me that I might want move to a more optimal location before the job became too unwieldy and risky.
I'm also considering trying my hand at manufacturing and selling modules so I was trying to decide what would be a good location for that activity. Cistuvaert has a fair amount of traffic (potential customers), but presumably most of them are fairly new and have limited ISK.
Oursulaert is only two jumps away (but in a different region) and has a huge amount of traffic. On the other hand, there's presumably lots of cut-throat competition, and the system is frequently plagued by lag (although maybe the new server has helped the lag).
So, do any successful manufacturers have any advice on where to set up shop to start. Should I stay where I am and sell to newer players? Should I move to the "big city" like Oursulaert? Should I pick some compromise system?
I was thinking of maybe compromising on another starting system the other side of Oursulaert. (Duripant I think.) It seems to have pretty high traffic, is closer to the center of Gallente space, and is in the same region as Oursulaert (so people checking the market there will see my stuff).
Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I do a lot of sales in Rens, which is another major hub like Oursulaert. The prices are usually rather low, but since it's a hub, you only need to be the lowest price in the system, as opposed to the lowest price in the region. Also, you can get away with being a bit higher-priced than everyone else in the system, and plenty of people will still buy your mods because you're the cheapest on that station, and they already came there to buy another mod (perhaps one you're selling).
I definitely recommend selling in the hubs. I don't know how hard it is to find a factory slot in Rens though, since all my manufacturing is done six jumps away. I haven't had much trouble moving it though, thanks to instas.

I go where my contacts are. I found the best lvl 1 agent, and moved to thier station. when I graduated to lvl 2 agents, I found the best one I could do and moved there. I'll keep it up till I max out on Agents lvl I assume.

There is a map setting that lets you view systems by the number of ships in the system. There is also a view that lets you see the number of ships destroyed within different time frames. What you want is a high sec system with lots of people next to a low sec system with lots of ships blowing up.
If you are selling small items, stations with schools are a good market. People go there for skills and (I think) it is where most regenerate from a cloan after being pked.

If you're planning on manufacturing, I don't think you'll be very happy with the facility availability in any 1.0 or 0.9 security system. I think you might want to look for a nice system somewhere around 0.5 that has a manufacturing and research facility you can use for a decent price and where you can get jobs queued up in in a reasonably timely fashion (don't expect it to be "now" all the time, just look for reasonable) - and that has a high traffic high security hub system for selling in close by and a high destruction system to generate demand close by...
And no, I'm not going to tell you where mine is...

Thank you all for your input. You gave me lots of good points to consider.
Prant - I have a question regarding your comment about not liking facilities in 1.0 and 0.9 system. Is this only because the facilities are always busy and thus it's hard to get your jobs scheduled or are there price differences as well?
Thanks
