As a first time poster on the forums, the following suggestion should be taken with a grain of salt.
While i have only played Eve for about a year, and done a little bit of null-sec and low- sec exploring, i have found that while PvP has its upsides and it certainly makes for a thrilling experience, i always gravitate towards PvE.
That is why im writing this topic, to give the devs some ideas (however bad they may be) how to make one of the current main PvE contents - Missions- "better".
Proplems with the current system:
1. It is clearly a progressive system, and while that is not bad in and off self, it does go against the current trend of trying to make every ship have a place in the game, and the mission level system is incentivizing "bigger is better" ship choices.
This also leaves alot of ships dusting in the hangar, as you move toward bigger rewards of lvl 4 missions (where the money is at the moment), that currently favor BS class ships over all other ships.
2. Group play is not encouraged enough. It does not help that most of the "hard missions" are easy to do solo.
3. The current missions are too focused on shooting the NPC, and the NPC acting as too much of a space pinjata that drops loot and gives bounty. The way the NPC in the new Ghost sites work is mayby a good path to take this.
4. The missions against the other empires are mostly ingored, as most players dont want to destroy the standings with the empires. Also getting 2 empire missions in a row and then having to choose to take a standing hit if you want missions against pirates does not make for very good content.
5. Most mission runners are concentraited in certain systems that have lvl 4 agents.
The new mission system?
Insted of levels, agents would give diffrent mission types and in diffrent configurations:
Scout missions:
Solo or Group (2-5 pilots)
Recommended ship class: Frigate or Destroyer (in group missions T2 or faction versions)
Recommended roles: Tackle or Combat (for group: Logistic, Interceptor ect......)
There would be diffrent missions for solo and group and also the difficulty would scale. Scout missions would be the beginner missions and would replace level 1 missions. They would also give vets a way to play with new players in group missions and also give locistic frigates a PvE purpose. The missions would be more objective based and mobility would play a biffer role.
Skirmish missions:
Solo or Group( 3-5 pilots)
Recommended ship class: Cruiser or Battlecruiser (for group missions: Frigate and Destroyer)
Recommended roles: Combat or Fast attack (for group Logistic, Tackle, Interceptor, Support ect.....)
This class of missions would be the most diverse, as they would replace lvl 2-3 missions. The solo missions would be for beginners still, but the group missions would be aimed at vets or a larger group or new players. The missions should have side objectives that reguire a certain role to fulfill. This would give more variety in ships that are used.
Battle missions:
Solo or Group ( 3-5 pilots)
Recommended ship class: Battleship, Commandship or T3 Cruiser. (for group missions: Battlecruisers and Advanced/Faction Cruisers)
Recommended roles: Combat and Fast attack (group missions: Logistics, Ewar, Tackle and ect.....)
The battle missions would be the closest to current lvl 4 missions, and the group mode would be closer to a small incursion and would be a good learning point for incursions. Some missions could have a side objectives that need fast tacklers or other smaller class ships to fulfill, this would give more variety of ships used.
Last but not least: Corporation missions
Once your corporation has enough standing (say 8.0) it would start receiving special missions randomly (they would be rare), that would reguire the corporation to co-operate to fulfill. It could be a mission arc also.
Pilots: 5-10
Recommended ships: All
Recommended roles: All (mayby)
Also all missions should have the amount of rats reduced and the remaining made a lot buffer. And the mission rewards should be less about shooting the rats and more about getting the objective. The rewards should also be made more even: Scout missions give the least but are the fastest to run, Skirmish should be in the middle, and Battle will give most but be the slowest to run. And Corporation missions should give shiny stuff, but be rare and difficult enough so its not too easy to farm.
In closing, i realy love Eve, its a wonderfull sandbox game unlike eny other, where, even though im a solified carebear, i can still "participate" (meaning im ganked ) in PvP while doing PvE.
While Eve is a mostly a PvP game, i enjoy its PvE parts and hope you continue to improve that part of the game as well, like you have done so recently with Ghost sites and Exploration (exploration mayby too much, players like doing it too much it seems).
If enyone has eny ideas how to improve the mission system please post and hope we can make Eve a game we can enjoy for a long time to come.
