I am having a hard time figuring out how I determine what distance I can lock a target.
In reading my ships discription I find that my targeting range is 45km but how do I find my lock on range?
Thanks in advance.

Targeting range = lock on range

Its:
( your ship targetting range + Long range tagetting skill + any sensor boosters you have running) - any sensor dampeners used against you (Player only, the NPC ones are way more annoying and don't work this way).
If you are in your ship, all relevant modules running, show info will show you your targetting range. ---- EVE-Central.com | Obsidian Technologies - Manufacturing, Defense and Logistics. We're hiring! Mail me |

I think this info helps. I was fighting some rats in 0.8 space and it seemed that they closed offly fast to within 4000m. I have equiped a missle launcher which I was hoping to get a couple shots off with before they were so close. I probably just need more practice at staying at a farther range.
I don't have any equipment that effects my target range yet. I doubt that I have any skills yet that do either. (2nd day playing)

Note that targeting range != weapon range. For missles, multiply flight time * speed to get max range. Guns, show info on the turret with the ammo mounted.
Also, there is targeting speed, which is based on your scanner resolution vs. other ships signature radius. Sensor booster help here. ---- EVE-Central.com | Obsidian Technologies - Manufacturing, Defense and Logistics. We're hiring! Mail me |

Edited by: Ragnar Hoth on 02/03/2006 22:44:52 Maybe that is whats happening. It's probably taking me a few seconds to be able to lock onto them. In which time they close the distance to attack. So I should stay at a range of say 40km until I can lock on then attack. Do rats use afterburners?

Yes, rats use ABs and MWDs.
You can try to keep at a distance while you lock on, but it won't work if the rats are faster than you are.
You should train up the Signature Analysis skill to decrease your locking time, and Long Range Targeting to up the locking distance. This should help if you warp in on them at a longer range than default (15k).

What I was considering is using my own afterburner to stay at a distance till lock occured. Not that killing the pirates is very difficult but figuring out stratagies to take less damage is fun.
Thanks for all the help

There seems to be some relationship between targetting speed and distance - my Stabber can lock onto a target at 20km in no time, but takes about 8 seconds to lock on under 5km. Whereas in my Rifter, well I tend not to target things at 20km, but it targets quite fast up close. Cold it have something to do with the tracking speed on the weapons mounted?

Sounds more like they were different types of ships. Tracking speed doesn't effect lock time.
