WoW was my first MMO. I've played it for over a year now, and this is my first venture into another game. This one seems a lot more my style; I was a huge fan of the Trade Wars BBS game and the economy-centric nature of Eve really appeals to me. After I signed up last night, I got to thinking... I probably never would have tried Eve if it hadn't been for my exposure to WoW. Is this true in a much more general sense? I.e., since WoW has come out with its 5,000,000+ subscribers, has there been a noticeable increase in interest in this game?

Yes.
It sucks you into the MMO world, and then you realize it sucks.
You go to play another MMORPG.
P.S. You can't really say that WoW is responsible for even the majority of the increase in EVE players; both E&B and SWG have had an exodus in that time period also.

with eve the devs listen they actually seek player feedback to make the game better they use in game data to make balancing decisions. Its actually the best way to improve the game if u take the best ideas from the fans and implement them in the game it is bound to be a winner - where WOW falls over they dont listen to the players CCP requested feature please - quite simple really.

eve economics is the best ive seen in a game, if its your style you can make millions buying and selling, i make regular profits just searching escrows claimimg "cheep" ones and re listing, when i have time, its awesome for that Quote: I probably never would have tried Eve if it hadn't been for my exposure to WoW. people forget that eve was out befor WoW, i guess exposure to the genre is good, and also people who try wow might be tempted to move over and experience something totally unique, eve is like a mini matrix you wont ever want to take that blue pill

Mostly true, though WoW doesn't suck until end game. It shows you what a game COULD be, and then what is shouldn't be.
EVE has had a number of WoW players come over, but mostly those who were already playing MMO's prior to WoW. Eve is a bit to 'hard core' for many of the true WoW MMO newbies.

Well, I had category 5 alt-itis... I have my main realm full of chars ranging from 20 to 40 with one 60, and also delved into PvP & RPPvP realms. I think the only reason I was able to stick with WoW for so long was the fact that I never really got to the endgame.
I'm still hooked, mind you... My wife and I have a grand old time running around with our hunters on a PvP server, but I've been very listless and downright bored recently with my solo play.

WoW is claiming to have 6,000,000 subscribers. For many people the subscription model is an initial barrier to entering the MMO games, but a success like WoW's brings alot of people in that then decide to try other subscription games.

Yeah, I had almost the same exact experience. I don't think I would have tried other MMOs (well, other being Eve) without first starting with a gateway MMO like WOW. :)
And not only is it nice that your forum posts don't immediately go away, it's also a big change that all the people you see on the Forums are in the game for you to meet. It sounds like a minor thing, but it does bring a greater sense of ... community? I dunno, something along those lines.

Edited by: Exogene on 03/03/2006 00:00:36 My first MMO was SWG. Well, i tried the 10 day trial which i played only for an hour, long enough to see how crap it is. Then heard about Eve from a friend and decided to give it a try. It was love on first sight. I knew about WoW long before that but it looked like a color book for children so I never bothered trying it.
Edit: You can play WoW on private servers without paying, so there isn't really a barrier...

Man.. I can't believe a game that is probably almost 15 years old if not more is still on the tounges and lips of people. I ran a bulliten board down in Texas back in 89/90 (1200 to 2400 to a smokin 14.4 boca!).. I initially tried to avoid the TW2k2 thing, instead having things like Pimp Wars, Operation:Overkill and The Pit!... (OOK was my favorite by far...)
I feel a close bonding with you people... .. ok, maybe not -that- close.. mind the gap..

I actually fell in love with that game after the internet had started to take hold. There was only one BBS in my area which ran it, and they only had 5 or 6 other users. I ended up buying my own copy and soloing it after a while. Thank god for the telnet version, though

I miss blowing up the sysop's planets on the BBS I played on, then getting kicked off the BBS and having to call his mother (he was 14 I think)and she would make him put back my login :P

Don't say things like that while I'm trolling at work. Dr Pepper + 23-inch LCD is not a good combination.

Dont let yourself get sucked in too deeply. I too was engrossed by the economic part of EVE the first time I played, and that resulted in me skiving college so I could be around for the post-downtime traderuns and all sorts of other RL-incursions. It aint healthy

I've just got into Eve after nearly a year of WoW as my first MMORPG like the OP. Although i'd played "free" online games before, mainly the Total War games, I doubt i'd have got into Eve without WoW - i tried an Eve trial maybe 2 years ago but was put off then by the monthly fee and intimidated by the control system. WoW showed me that you could get value for money from paying a monthly fee for an online game. While i still play WoW a little (raiding the high end areas only these days), the idea in Eve that you can build up and conquer your own part of the game universe with and against other players is what i mainly feel i miss in WoW - being able to carve out your own kingdom would really make the WoW endgame provide the missing element that puts people off once they level their characters to 60.

EVE can be rediculously addictive.
I remember taking a couple of days off from college to mine all the nox for my first BS. Those were the days.
This is my first MMO and to be honest i was very sniffy about getting into it in the first place having exclusively been playing half-life mods (firearms pwns you all) for the past few years, and in fact i had never really liked any RPGs at all since they always make me run around the houses delivering gerbils and trying to find some obscure character to talk to so i can get the blah to do blah blah.
Eve really blew me away. Its awesome in its own right, and i think its the player base spreading the word who make it expand.

Eve was actually my third MMO. Planetside my first, then WoW. WoW I found more bloody boring the Planetside, and Eve just blows them both away. Never really cared for SWG, so I never tried it. I think I might have tried a demo for AO at some point....Wow, was that "fun"... In the end, here I am

There is no doubt that it is true.
Not a clue how many ex-WoWees end up here, but there is no doubt that WoW put MMOs in the general public's eye.
5 million suscribers, that is 50 times our current number. And with the high turnout WoW has, you could say that 10 million, maybe 15 million have played it; yup, no doubt about it, WoW will be remembered as the game that put MMOs in the big spotlight.
Quality is a different issue, of course, but if we are talking popularity here, cant argue against 5 millions.

No doubt, WoW helped every other MMO out there. Despite what the haters say, it *IS* a good game and well designed for the most part. The new high level raid zone has some fantastic encounters.
It's just not built for the more hardcore or for those who want to have a more interactive world, hence all the hate from the Eve crowd ;). That and the PvP differences...?
It's aimed at different people.
I'm glad WoW happened, though....it means more MMO's will be developed ;).
