is it expected for a logI pilot to have rep drones out also or are damage drones permissible/advisable. I guess mostly I am looking for some rules of thumb when they need to be out. How useful are the repair drones?

Logistics drones don't really repair that much, and easily die to bombs and such. There are generally two schools of thought on drones on logistics:
1) Carry armor repair drones (even if you're in a shield logi), use them during quiet moments between fights to repair people who took armor damage.
2) Carry combat drones, during a fight assign them to someone in fleet to get on killmails.
There are other choices, such as ECM drones (mostly useful in smaller gangs to escape when tackled), or sentries (good for POS bashing when combat drones can't reach the POS). But most of the times you'll want 1 or 2 (or a combination!). I don't know if any corps/allys have any draconian policies against combat drones on logis, it seems unreasonable but you might want to check with yours. |

Repair drones are useful if they are T2, and your ship is bonused for them (Exequeror, Scythe, Oneiros, Scimitar, possibly more I forget). If at least one of these isn't true, I wouldn't bother - though even cheap armor ones on any ship can still be useful after a battle as Abdiel says, especially if your ship has a big enough drone bay to carry a few.

With Rubicon, "quite time" repairs have become much easier anyway, as you can drop a mobile depot and change drones & high slots to repair whatever needed. As a depot now costs less than 1 million ISK, it's cheap and convenient to carry one around. |

Repair drones are essential for the ships which get bonuses to them. A quick example is the Gallente t1 logi, which loses a ton of repping power if you don't use logi drones.
If your logi drones aren't bonused, they aren't essential. However, I'd still use them on logistics ships over damage drones. You want to have as many of your fleetmates locked up as possible and you don't want to split your attention between managing offensive drones and repping your friends. |

Or doing the opposite on accident because you are splitting your attention. Want to have some chat in game? Need help to get into the game as a new player? Just join my channel: Crazy Dutch Guy |

You don't actually manually hit stuff with your combat drones as a logi. You don't have enough targeting slots or attention time to do that. You just assign them to a fleet member (usually the FC or a fast-locking ship) and let them work independently. Yes you still get killmails. |
