Hey, can Amarr ships do good in Gallente/Caldari space for PvE? Im thinking of switching to Amarr ships since beam weapons (look soooo awesome! :D) and Amarr ship designs appeal to me, however my home is in Fricoure where all my friends and corp is.
i did a little reading from past threads and it seamed that Amarr is really weak for PvE everywhere except Amarr space, but i want to stay in Fricoure since all my friends are here.
Is it fine/good to switch to Amarr if i wanted too?
ps: im currently flying Caldari ships |

The problem lies with the damage type.
Lasers only deal EM and Thermal damage, so they are suboptimal against rats that have strong resists against those damages. It's not totally impossible to do missions outside of Amarr space, but not optimal as more of your damage will be resisted. It's especially bad against Angel ships.
Of course, not all Amarr ships use lasers - they also have drone boats and even some missile ships which don't have those problems. |

One thing you can do to compensate for the poor damage dealing profile of lasers is to simply fit your ship to deal more damage. The trade-off is that you might have to use fits that will not leave much room for error (as they might not have sufficient tank).
I suggest looking to speedy, ranged fits... that way you can mitigate most of the incoming damage while dishing your own. I hear good things about the Omen and Apocalypse (and if you don't mind also training drones, the Armageddon is truly beastly). Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

Yeah you'll be fine. I switched to Amarr too and have spent most of my missioning time in gallente, it was fine.
Lazers rock, end of story.

As Thomas said, your fixed EM/Thermal damage output might be a slight "issue" (note the quote-marks).
With that I mean that anything you are shooting with higher EM / Thermal resist will take a little bit longer to kill if compared to optimal damage profile using (so shooting the rat in it's resist hole).
This does NOT mean that Amarr is useless outside of Amarr space. It's just not 100% optimal in some cases. Want to have some chat in game? Need help to get into the game as a new player? Just join my channel: Crazy Dutch Guy |

Just to add some numbers to give you an idea.
As long as you stay in Gallente space, it's not so bad, as Serpentis have their highest resist against Explosive. You'll lose ~20% dps compared to other weapon systems, but that's not the end of the world.
In Caldari space, it's more of an issue, as Gurista's highest resist is EM, so you lose ~30% dps, which starts to be more noticeable. Also, that 30% drop is with Multifrequency crystals, if you use Scorch (which is almost pure EM), the drop is more around 40%, which is almost prohibitive.
Of course, these number vary depending on the ship you are shooting, on the weapon system you compare it with and they don't take into account all the different ship/weapon bonuses - I only checked how much of your theoretical dps you'll lose. However, Tachyons deal more theoretical damage than any other large long range turret, so that overcomes the resistances a bit. But then, due to the higher fitting and capacitor requirements it's difficult to get their full potential out of them. |

iirc some laser crystals got more EM or more Thermal damage on them so if you check online which resists the rats got you can increase you damage potential against those rats. Laser damage profile:
Short range - more thermal Long range - more EM.
So the shorter the range the more % Thermal damage from the crystal, the longer the range the more % EM damage from the crystal. Want to have some chat in game? Need help to get into the game as a new player? Just join my channel: Crazy Dutch Guy |
