Am I alone?

Yes, you are.
Not being able to directly control one's ship and fake space physics don't exactly remind me of Elite. Glitches do, however ;)

Actually, the original Elite had 'fake physics' as you put it.
One of the major flaws of Elite II was the implementation of a real world physics engine which made the game an absolute pig to play at times.
Certainly many of the feautures in EVE are direct influences from Elite. All its missing is the Blue Danube playing whilst you dock :p ------------------ The ISS Navy is recruiting.

It would be fun to dock in EVE, hear that dreaded scraping noise and watch your shields, armour and hull quickly dissipate though... at least the first time.

Frontier was a classic. I hoped when I saw Frontier Development news 4 years ago that Elite 4 would be about sometime but I've given up hope now. It was supposedly going to include an online element and first person movement in stations. DB has gonne down the games console route now and only makes kids games for consoles which is a shame really.
I want to fly a Panther again, that was a nice ship. Or the Imperial Cruiser with its awesome weaponry and one shot kills when rats attacked. Anyone remember Blakes 7 series - Doesn't the ship remind you of an Imperial Cruiser?
Eve has taken over from it due to my passion for space sims which seem to be dying out slowly. You see fewer space sims on the shelves now.

Isnt Elite 4 still in development? I understand it is still being worked on. Certainly they announced a few years ago it was in development.
My memories of Elite are entirely rose tinted, of course. I was 8 years old and playing it on the C64. I didnt do too bad for an 8 year old, as I recall.

Elite 4 is in development and I believe there are two versions coming out one of which is an online version. There was a recent interview with him in either PZ Zone or PC Gamer (UK) and im sure I read it there.

*sigh* Nostalgia....
I grew up with the original version of Elite on the BBC... I first played the game when it loaded from tape..
BTW - OP... Was that an intentional pun in the title? ( or does Frontier Elite not mention Ian Bell ) ----- Lucid but lost... |

I played the orgininal Elite until my eyes went sore back in the mid 80's. Exploring the galaxy, trading valuable goods, shooting ambushing pirates. I still consider it one of the best, if not the best computer game experience I have ever had.
So yes, EVE is a dream come true, some 20 years later.
By the way, check out this article at EveNews if you want to read more about the history of Elite. ----- "Serving your sushi cold since march 2006." |

OMG, I used to love that game, in fact I kept my old amiga just in case of a rainy day, lets start a petition for the blue danube to play everytime you dock, and that cool mission impossible type music when you came under attack from space pieratz. I emailed DB about a year aog on the prospect of Elite 4 and the reply was blunt and tactless considering the huge number of fans Elite had.
Quote: Elite 4 has been shelved for the moment. Other more important projects have had staff moved to them in order for us to complete them on schedule. It is unknown whether the Elite 4 project will ever be revived at this time.
What could be more important than continuing work on a game that made DB who he is today? Especially since Elite and the two following versions Frontier and First Encounters had such a collosal fan base.
Eve is the closest we have come to it since and look at the number of fans it has. Had Elite 4 Online come out when he was originally working on it, or even 2 years after, Eve would have really had some competition.

Remeber buying a new ship and forgetting to fit an autopilot module, then having to manual dock? :)
Or ratting / assainations with a 30MW Mining laser fitted on a tiny ship, hehe.
