This is the first time posting here so sorry if this has been posted before or I have not provided enough information but here we go:
The problem is just a example but apparently everywhere in new Eden:
There is a guy in system that runs Links in a T3 Cruiser in a safe spot as does most Links. In any 1 v 1 it would not be a fair fight at all. (I am using a 1 v 1 just as an Example remember) Even though you are 1 v 1 the Links helps that pilot a lot.
Now I know Links are always off grid and apparently the Command ship was the best ship to use before the T3 Crusiers came out with their bonuses to Link Modules.
My question on comms to my alliance vets was that if they make the Command ships and Capitals the only able ships to use the Links modules and they had to be on grid, if that would solve the problem?
Answer: No, Because of the Titan. (It is apparently what the ship has been designed for and gets used for most of the time - system wide links - other than doomsday and bridging people)
Solution:
A deployable module/Item/Beacon that will give 50km, 100km or 150km range Link Removal unless the ship is on grid where this module is deployed.
If you make it like a container that you can anchor and runs for letGÇÖs say 10-15 Minutes.
This module will come in Small/Medium/Large versions.
The small will be so a frigate can carry it and deploy it but maybe only has 50km range / Medium 100km and Large 150km.
It will force any fleet wanting to run links to use the Command ships or Capitals for their role and will prevent the off grid T3 Links unless you do not deploy the Module or have the T3 on Grid.
Each module will also have some HP so the fleet wanting to run Links can shoot and kill it if it meant it will be a fight changer but not give it to little a HP to just pop it and continue the fight.
What you think?

This is silly; why would you tie that to a deployable? Furthermore, limiting the ships that can fit links isn't going to do a damn thing to fix the problem, and simply makes it more difficult to field on-grid link.
Off grid boosts should be (and per Fozzie, will be) removed entirely. |

eliminating t3 links would be an inconvenience rather than a solution.
an OGB-stopping deployable would be kinda dumb, and would also not help in most situations. "CCP is changing policy, and has asked that we discontinue the bonus credit program after November 7th. So until then, enjoy a super-bonus of 1B Blink Credit for each 60-day GTC you buy!"

I think you will find if you read it again it states that I asked the alliance players if that would work and they said no. Thus the deployable item.

Actual off-grid solution: remove fleet bonuses from the game and refund SP, because they're a fundamentally stupid and passive mechanic that does nothing to add nuance or strategy to combat. |

Issues with removing off grid boosts completely:
In relation to small > medium scale combat.
- You give more benefit to the larger group who can successfully defend an on grid ship. This leads towards N+1 Mechanics
- You give a significant bonus to the group already setup on grid, example jumping into an enemy fleet already waiting for you, with links running.
- Grid FU - my grid, my rules, my booster at 1000km in a L grid
Other solutions:
- Link agression timer. No dock/jump for 60secs (or longer).
- Link warp prevention - can't warp for 10 seconds after links turned off
- Link visual clue - make ships getting links glow / have a visible effect.
- Or as Eric suggests an on grid deployable / cyno jammer style

Just an FYI... several DEVs have expressed dissatisfaction over the "off-grid" aspect of warfare links and are supposedly working on making them so that they only work on-grid.
The current roadblock they are having is optimization.
And before the whining about "link ships wouldn't survive on-grid" may I remind people that Tech 3s and several other ships (Orca and Rorqual) have not been rebalanced yet. They will likely get treatment similar to what Command Ship got. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |
