Its like this, to determine how close you arrive at a gate is determined how far you warp from. So someone warping from say 64 AU away from another stargate arrives at the next stargate at say 20km while someone warping from 32 AU out arrives 10 km from the gate.
This hopefully would increase the use of asteroid belts , planets and moons to arrive closer to a stargate and thereby enabling pirates to wait at the celestial objects closer to a stargate for instance for would be travellers increasing belt piracy to a degree while lazy folks who simply warp from stargate to stargate get a greater risk by arriving further away than from someone who uses belts and other celestial objects. Any thoughts on this idea?

Actually this is a great idea...it promotes knowledge of the system as the quickest route, and encourages people not to use Autopilot for maximum travel time. Some gates would become natural pirate gatecamps, while others could run blockades easier than before (without bookmarks).
Regardless of the specifics, some sort of distance formula would work.

Great, so now people make two or three extra BMs per route and system to get there faster... How did this solve anything?

This changes nothing. Now I just have to jump to a gate, see how much I miss it by, then overshoot the gate by that much (minus gate width) and make a bookmark.

To be fair it would be possible to fix that just by enforcing a minimum distance you land from the gate regardless of your target BM.
However anything that adds to travel time is going to be grossly unpopular, and not all systems have celestial objects near gates anyway so it's another <bzzzt> in my opinion.

Hmm I had the impression that all stargates were in orbit of a planet so someone could warp to a planet then warp to a stargate and be say 5km from the gate.
Perhaps Im wrong as I don't really take much notice of celestial objects near stargates. Also assume that bookmarks cannot be placed within a certain distance of a stargate (50km say). Maybe it could be applied to the closest celestial object to the stargate as it doesn't necessarily have to rely on AU at all.
Instead of warping to your insta just warp to the closest celestial object to the stargate you want to go to then to the stargate and be within 5km (or 2.5km?) of the gate. Any more suggestions on this idea?

Quite an incorrect assumption actually, Gates tend to be the most isolated objects in the known galaxy.
There are many other posts on this same subject, most people are getting sick of the multitude of instas they have to make or buy just to get from one place to another in a reasonable amount of time.
