I will be doing a section on Merx tomorow and how MDCM work, both for BS and barges, especially the skiff. I am not at home at the moment, and the Item Database online is outdated and I have no access to an EvE client until tomorow.
Originally by: Menthal
nice you've put some work into it, but i have some further explaining 1st) mining foreman mind link: 15% yield 50% command bonus or whatever this is for the char in the bc 2nd) also for the bc the skill squadron commander gives 10% to effectivity at lvl 4 mining foreman and lvl 3 squadron commander you get like 10.4% with both at lvl 5 you should get 15% add this with the mining foreman mindlink implant (slot 10) you'll get 20% in total to yield 3rd) the slot 7 implant aka the michi excavator gives 5% yield to mining lasers, don't know whether that also apply's on barges or exhumers
1) I concentrated only on the crystal link optimization so far. The rest of the links will be covered soon as well. 2) You might be right though, but I am not sure if the Squadron skill increases the mining yield. Even then, it is not directly mining relevent, so I did not cover it either. Might be worth it to cover it in a later section. 3) Yes, Mining Implants affect any lasers, be it on a barge or BS.

It's interesting to see that a covetor will pull in about the same as a BS ratting in 0.0 per hour (about 50 mill, more if you get good spawns =/)
50mil is indeed very optimistic and only achievable with good spawns and good loots. A normal hour of ratting will bring in 15-20mil or so with bounties, without loots. Mining on the other hand is always steady and a stable source of ISK. Granted, ratting can be more fun, but a good skilled Hulk pilot will bring more ISK for sure every hour, which makes it then easier to finance T2 Ships to have some PvP fun.

Also, excellent post. Very informative and helpful for the new and old. I have been doing the mining thing for about 7 months and have been debating if the Hulk was worth it. Your guide has helped me set a new goal Very Happy.
I'm glad it helped out, really I am :) The Hulk is indeed a major godsend. Its 8000m3 cargo is a very good asset, not mentionning the fact that it will tank a belt by itself. Providing you don't lose it after one week of usage, it is worth every penny.
On a mroe general note, thank you VERY MUCH for the kind support. I only took the hours this guide required because the EvE Community is so great. I will update this guide for future references, and seeing hiw positive the response is, I'll be motivated to extend it further.
Coming soon: Mercoxit, Skiff, Modulated Deep Core Strip Miner II coverage.

Actually, i don't mean Modulated Deep Core Strip Miners, i mean ordinary Modulated Deep Core Miners II, which can fit not only Mecroxit Crystals, but any Mining Crystal (Veld, Scord etc) It's very useful on Apoc or Domi...

The reason why I didn't cover them is because I thought to myself if somebody is going to train 30+days for Crystals, they might want to get the best out of it and get a Covetor or Hulk as well.
Seeing as some people mine only as a hobby , I will cover MDCSMII as well as MDCMII in my Merx section of tomorow, as well as the Squadron skill figures on the links.

You can solo mine without two accounts or friends, even in 0.0 . In Empire it is easier of course (in fact, mining in 0.6 Omber can be lucrative too and the rats are tankable in a Cov with some drones) but like I said, 0.0 isn't out of reach for solo miners with only one account.
My best suggestion for a solo miner is to join a 0.0 corp and get a Dominix. The only problem will be hauling. What you can do is finish the spawn off with your Domi, and haul it quickly in an Indy, of if you got a Transport Ship (the Bustard is the best Transport ship when you want to use expanders only in lows since it shield tanks, vs the Occator which has limited tanking capabilities when using all low-slots for expanders) you won't even have to worry about the spawn.
My ultimate suggestion though is this: join a corp, get a covetor and do mining ops with corpmates, buy timecards (100mil for 30days, 270mil for 90 days)) to finance an alt, and then you can solo mine better and not be dependant of a corpmate to mine if none are available. Having to switch every hour or so to haul is really a bit** and you will get sick of it really quick. Trust me on that
About the link At mining director I, the bonus is indeed of 2% and not 4%. Since Mining Director I is required to use the link, it really works this way.
Also, Squadron skill increases the Warfare link only, I checked in item database. The Mining Foreman Link are therefore not affected by the squadron skill. I will update this in the guide later too.

Well, I spent those 30+ days not for the crystals themselves, but for refining my ores ... and since I already had some Amarr Cruiser and BS skills, I went for the Modulated Deep Core Miner IIs, and gladly left another 30+ days skill line on the side (the barge one).
Mining and producing are my main sources of income (I do some missions/Complexes for fun on the side), and I won't be climbing in a barge anytime soon, a Covetor isn't really appealing (30 days for a slight increase in m¦/hour over my apoc, and it's rather brittle), and a Hulk is way too expensive for my wallet (Empire carebear here, I truly loathe PvP so you won't see me in lowsec).

We might have misscalculated :) Regards EDIT:calculations were done with zydr price at 4k and morph at 18k with no t2 equipment. ... A wise man never plays TAG with a RINO |

Yes I will, because it makes the most sense to do it. Since the release of the Machinaw, ice mining has also been made easier.
I will definitely run figures on that :)

It makes indeed no sense to go through 30 days of training if you're a casual miner. What I like about Mining is that you can do it while being in front of the computer but still doing something else. As a student, I work a lot on my computer, for papers or whatever. I've got three accounts so I can also PvP/Rat when I feel like it to break the routine and boreness of mining.
Again, if you had the skills for Crystal already, and as the guide shows, an Apoc will do very well indeed.

This is especially true when you get a Hulk. My corp buys the ore directly unrefined in 0.0. Granted I only get a little more than 50% of empire price, but I save countless hours of hauling, and I like it this way. Hauling from 0.0 to Empire in a Freighter is not only dangerous (or maybe suicidal, solo at least) but it takes forever. In a Hulk you can easily make 1bil per week with about 30 hours of mining per week. Considering mining is a partly afk job (it's careless to leave the desk, but you don't need to actively seek rats, you can juste leave your ship in the belt for a real hour while a alt haul) it's not a lot. I did 1bil last month with a Dominix (about 100-120hours). Considering the Hulk mines about 4.5 times more, I would have easily made 4bil this month if I had a Hulk.
Beat that with ratting
On another note, making so much money with mining allows you to finance a second (and third) account with GTC , as well as T2 gears and expansive skills (dread and carrier skills) relatively risk-free.

I'm thinking about it, but I'm mostly a solo player (made my own corp to be left alone), and since I refuse to participate in any PvP, I avoid lowsec space (0.5 and lower) ...
So, to make those 500 millions for a Hulk, I'll have to mine a stupid amount of Kernite/Omber ... or go in lowsec/0.0, and take the risk of losing everything I own to some jerk hoped up on adrenalin that wants "a kill, yaaarrrr" ...
And I would still need to take 30 days to raise the Mining Barge skill to 5 (don't even have it right now) ...

Considering the Hulk as an absolute Uber tank (although the modules cost about 150mil all in all) you can easily fit 2x WCS in the lows and escape without a problem any solo pirate. Mining in 0.0 isn't that deadly... pay attention to local for hostiles, have a safespot bookmarked already, and you won't have a big problem. What IS problematic is hauling of course. If you want, I can run the number to how long it would take for a Hulk to pay for itself with your figures...

Originally by: Halada Again, if you're serious about mining, you'll want to move to 0.0 as fast as possible. Your ISK income will increase tenfold.
That's the problem. I don't want to go in 0.0. Even the remotest possibility of PvP is enough for me to want to close the game and go read a book.
I know that by staying in Empire, high-sec space I'm paying for a fourth of the game, and I know that I could make billions in 0.0, but I play to relax, I have enough stress already in my everyday life (4 ulcers and 2 heart attacks at 31 years, I need to slow down ...), the added stress of moving through wannabee-pirates infested space, and then of staying in "controlled" space with the threat of being considered "hostile" and used as target practice, is too much for me ...
And also, I don't have the 500 millions for the Hulk, not even the 150 millions for it's fitting ...
I'll stay in safe space, keep my "slow" cashflow and avoid the added stress
