then how is it possable to have 2 hulks mine out in 0.0 space without being blown to hell from NPC's without the needs of fighter ships to sit there and tank or kill the NPC's

Easy. 1 Gisti small shield booster, 2 specfic hardeners IE for Sansha you want ie EM and 1 thermic (but they must be named or factional, stock T1/T2 won't fit) and 1 eutectic cap recharger. Boom! 1 tanking hulk in 0.0
Also note, this works on a mackinaw too, if you want to do 0.0 ice mining. ----------

This guide is amazing thank-you Halada. I am only 6 weeks old and have been all out to train for being as efficient as i can , I have just got my retriever and am struggling to fit it so as to get the most out of it. I noticed in the guide that you quoted 3x mining upgrades , but only noticed 2 low slots also need for capacitor boost. Like i said i am only a novice so i am sure i lack knowledge to the database of items i can use and fit, some insight would be great , and a possible set up for my newly purchased retriever.

Wow, I'm always impressed when a member of the community makes such an effort to spread their knowledge.
Many thanks for the guide mate, it's taught me some things and reinforced some others I only had a hunch about before.
One other thing. I've just started to mine ice, and wondered if the guide could include various types of paint to watch drying while mining?

Hulks ain't that great for tanking sansha btw. Possible but certainly not that easy, and can't tank stuff as high bountied as angels coz of resists you get against EM/Therm.

The 3x mining upgrades was referring to battleship fittings. Regardless of what barge you have, you can only fit 1x mining upgrade, while Exhumers can fit 2.
There arent 1000 ways to fit barges though. On a retriever 2x strips, 1x mining upgrade, 1xPDU2 and 1x survey scanner in the med... hope this helps

Very true.. Hulk is very efficient at tanking angels but it's hard to tank those heavy sanshas. Officer mods would easily solve this w/ shield compensation at 4 for the booster...

The Gang Module for Laseroptimisation is not broken, atm he don't stack with the Mining Foreman skill. This is a bug and reported to a bughunter.
From tests: a "Low" Miner with Miningskill 4 has with a Laser 2: 72 Yield in Gang with me (Foreman V = 10%): 79,2 Yield with active Laser Module (Sq. Command 4;Director 4 = +11,2%): 80,064 Yield Alinea

Wow amazing guide thanks this is my alt that can fly a raven and I am now looking to see how he can help my mining Charateres.
Eventually I see him in a command ship running the mining links.
He currently can not mine and has no mining barge skills. So I see him only in a support role/tank/ rat killer.
Just wondering what your recomendations would be on trianing path i would think that mining forman would be my first skills to train then go for the command ship then go for the links and squad command.
I realize that currently the mining forman links are not working perfectly but i figure that by the time i get there they will be.

Just read your guide, absoloutely awesome but you say that mdcsm2's can only mine mercoxit. According to the item database you can mine anything by changing the crystals on the fly. Link below. Am I missing something?

Edited by: g0pher on 17/05/2006 08:48:09 Well, it's not usefull using the MDCSMII's for regular mining. Ofcourse they're good, but MSMII's are better.
MDCSMII's have a standard amount of 250/cycle MSMII's have a standard amount of 360/cycle
MDCMII's are broken for mercoxit crystals btw. I've reported it as a bug before, but I've not seen it fixed yet. -============================-
I haven't read all 9 pages, because it simply takes up too much time. But has the author also kept in mind that it's not just Mining Director V that gives a bonus to the mining link gank module. Squadron command also improves the output. Only by 10% and not by 100% like Mining Director does. But it does improve the output a bit.

Just a side note about cycles on ice harvesters.
If you let them preform a cycle, past half the time in a Mackinaw only, you can end the cycle and recieve 1 block of ice from each strip miner
This is ONLY for macks and your ice miners MUST have cycled at least half the time your cycle lasts for (round up) --------------

Very nice post but I do have a question regarding the Hulk setup for tanking. How do u actualy tank with it I understand u use that small booster with 2 hardners but the miners are very cap consuming when they activate, do u turn the booster on boost for a while then turn it off?Cus I imagine it will eventualy run the capacitor dry if u keep it perma on

AFAIK the squadron command shouldn't affect the link, although it does. They either need to fix the description or fix the bug and make it work. The Mining Foreman skill AND the link should also stack as you probably guessed, this is known issue already and should be fixed in Kali.

The "link" section of this guide is dedicated exactly to that

If you don't plan in making him a miner than you need (I also suggest training in that order) Mining Foreman V, Leadership V and Mining Director V. If you want the Mining Foreman Mindlink to boost the bonuses even more you also need Cybernetic V.

I haven't tried fitting other crystals on MDCSM2, but it's pointless anyway as its counterpart, the MSM2 fits all other crystals and has a higher base yield (360 vs 250) so there's no reason why you would have to fit something other than a Mercoxit Crystal II on a MDCSM2. That, and it can be that the database.

Never had a chance to test it but it makes sense since the mackinaw is the only ship giving a bonus to yield (2 ice units per cycle instead of 1) so I guess if you do half the cycle then you do get a full ice unit. Thanks for letting me know :)

With capskills at IV and the suggested setup (Gisti SB and the Eutectic) with T1 Strip miners you can leave the tank on 24/7 without worrying about anything.
Problems arise with T2 Strip miners, you must stagger the strips by leaving 30 sec between each activation so you do not run out of cap. Having Shield Compensation at IV or V to even further reduce the cap need of the Gisti booster might fix this problem, I'm not that far yet though. The whole point of tanking a spawn is leaving the tank on 24/7, otherwise it's useless.

I've been mining ice with my mack in .5 sec and have been using this set up: Hi's - 2 Ice miner 2's Mids - 2 Civilian shield boosters. 2 F-B10 Nominal Capacitor rechargers. Lows - 2 Ice Harvesting Upgrades.
With these, I have used 26/43 power and 229/235 cpu.
For .5 sec space, this is just fine and dandy. With lvl 4 shield operation and management and max cap skills I can "tank" the rats as long as I need to, though of course my drones can comfortably kill them as well.
My question is whether anyone can think of a set up that can fit 2 ice harvesting upgrades and any kind of tank whatsoever for mining in lower sec space. In 0.3 space I can fit 1 upgrade and a medium C5-L emergency overload... and that's it due to cpu issues (obviously due to the ice upgrades). The shields soak up the damage, the booster reps it enough while my drones kill off the cruisers. But I have spare mid slots that I can't think of how to fit and if I didn't have good drones skills then it would be too dangerous.
Can anyone suggest anything or do I have to bite the bullet of another 30 seconds per unit cycle. I'd ask in ships and modules but this is the mining guide and people (Halada?) might already have something in mind. Failing this, regardless of the upgrades, what setups do people use in low sec that measures up against the tanks that the Hulk can mount?
Thanks in advance.

While I'm here, and apologies if it's been missed in the previous pages, but I'm still having trouble getting my head around who would have to have what implants in their heads and what command links in what ships, to get the most out of a mining op. Is it, I as the miner have the mining ship and ***** on in the field doing what we do with a good book etc. An alt or corp mate needs to have a battlecruiser, a mining link with director V (and naturally foreman V) sat in the system somewhere.
Could you "illustrate" a set up for a mining op for me with who needs to be in what.etc. I ask as I'm trying to figure out the skill training required for my alt to support my mining efforts and those of anyone with me...or would it be just easier to get him into a covetor and he can switch to hauling as required...
Sorry for not figuring it out myself but I'm easily confused. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Edited by: Olterin Fire on 21/05/2006 11:43:36 Correct me if I'm wrong or if this has been mentioned before (yes, I'm lazy to read the whole thread), but don't the tech II strip miners get an additional 360 ore per cycle for the specific crystal type if you mine the ore your crystals are specialized for? Which would be not 360 but 720... just wondering though, I may well be wrong

Best guide on the forum, thanks again.
Now, is there a guide out there which LISTS the value of ORE? ie. Which is the most profitable Asteroid to mine with refining, which is the most without refinining blah blah blah.

Well, it works a little like this but not exactly... T1 Strips get a base yield of 540. Base yield of T2 strips only get 360, BUT they can use crystals... as defined in the guide:
Originally by: TigerLord
Base yield for strip miners II with: T1 Crystal: (360*1.625)= 585 T2: Crystal: (360*1.75)= 630
Hope this answers your question :)

clear enough, my question remains though. The stats of the stip miner 2 have a value "mining amount" and a value "specialty crystal mining amount". My question is why there are 2 values and not just one. (my noobish guess was that it gives the mining ammount + the second one times the crystal bonus )
