I am having a hard time deciding and since I am only 3 days old, I will defer to all of you...
I want the ship primarily for combat.

The kessie is a much easier ship to use effectively with low skills. Your goals become to stay at range and hurl a large number of missiles down range at your target. With a new character I'd go with the kessie, and save the headache of making the Merlin effective for when you have a few million skill points in engineering and gunnery.

Kessie definatly...that way you don't have to worry about such things as transversal velocity for awhile. Missiles/rockets always hit unless a) you're out of range, or b) the target has defenders loaded.

if you go the Kestrel route, you should keep an eye on your power grid when deciding what to put on your ship. i had to get Engineering 4 to load it up with 4 standard launchers, a nanofiber,a ballistc control unit and a civilian afterburner/shield booster.

Kestrel + Caldari frig V + Rockets V + Rockets spec 4 = Throw in the fury/rage rockets if you're hitting AFs or bigger and you're going to be putting the hurt on.
Even just frig 4 and rockets 4 is still pretty sick on a kestrel and can seriously ruin the day of unprepared targets. Also you can NPc well in it too. Once yhou get within range of even NPC cruiser they just start getting hammered.
Ofcourse if you're going to fly with a friend, go with the merlin and tank (and have the friend fly the kestrel).

As a noob with a massive 159,299 SPs to my name, I recently moved from a Kestrel to a Merlin. I had a nifty Standard Missile kit on the Kestrel, but grid limitations (that I lacked the skills to alliviate) kept me from mounting more than two of the Standard Missile Launcher Is on it. So I grabbed a Merlin and... stuck two Standard Missile Launchers on it, planning to take advantage of the two gun mounts and extra med-slot with the increased grid the Merlin has over the Kestrel.
In the long run, I could use the Kestrel to better effect along these lines than the Merlin, but that takes skills I don't have yet, especially while I work on my Learning skills.

for mission running as well, missiles will deal noticably more damage mainly because you won't need to worry about tranversial velocity only range. Even if something gets too close to you (once again for low lvl mission running) you'll still get a solid hit based on their resistances.
Plus most of the missions your targets are equipped for short range combat, all you need to do is keep distance at the edge of your missile range and watch them pop.
Where as gunnary, if they get too close you'll have a hard time tracking them. I'd say go with the kestral while you cook up other skills, for more skilled pilots gunnary can tend to be more satisfying.

I <3 my kestrel. I instakill the frigates in my missions in one volley of bloodclaws from out of range of their guns.

Edited by: Bottled Brain on 18/03/2006 12:06:48 Yes, missiles are easier to use and do more damage with low skillpoints.
Missiles are no-brainers.If you actually want to fly your ship, instead of warping in at long range and spamming missiles, take a merlin and learn about range and tansversal speed. :)
The merlin is a long range rail / missile ship with stronger defense.
If you want to use your frig for a while, try the merlin. It¦s fun to see this little sturdy ship grow under your hands while your skills go up. If you just want to rush through frig lvl take the kestrel. :)
merlin: 35mw x 1.15 (engineering lvl3) x 1.05^2 (2 power diagnostic)= 44.37mw 2 125mm rail - 7mw x 2 + 2 standard launcher - 8mw x 2 = 30mw => 14mw left to fit an afterburner, small shield booster and 2 shield resistance amplifiers (I haven¦t checked the cpu in detail but with some lvls in weapon upgrades and/or malkuth launchers it should work.)
125 mm rail range with skills at lvl3 and tungsten ammo: 9000 x 1.15 x 1.3 x 1.4 = 18,8km ~20km
With a kestrel and light missiles you reach easily about 30km. But with low skillpoints you can¦t fit an ab with standard launchers and the kestrel¦s cap, shields and shield resistances are lower than the merlin¦s.
