I have been able to get around the flickering problem by the following steps...
Once the character selection screen shows up (my flickering usually starts here...) hit escape. This will bring up the configuration window. It will also be flickering. :) What I noticed was that if I changed the "Present Interval" setting to anything than what it was currently on and hit apply, the flickering goes away.
In addition to this, it seems on my MBPr 15" setting and leaving the Interval value on "Interval Two" seems to get rid of the flickering for good.
What was odd, was things worked well for sometime before the flickering started. I don't believe their was an Eve update or Wine update or Mac update that preceded it. Maybe I missed something? Anyway, the above fixed the flickering for me.

Unfortunately, after todays Eve update (v8.41.712925) my screen is not updating correctly. The character selection screen is borked and once I'm in game I can't seem to get a the left menu bar to stay on screen. It only shows up for brief instances when I move my mouse over it.
I was hoping a wine update might help (I'm on 1.7.10 now), but it sounds like there are different issues with 1.7.11. Please post updates. Now that I've been running on wine for awhile I don't really want to go back to cider... :)

I can also confirm having issues since the update today. Character selection screen is mostly black, and all textures including what you see when you disable station environment are either black or transparent.
Currently trying to figure out a solution. Will post updates when I find something. |

The latest patch fixes the issues noted so far, but a new one has cropped up on my setup. Currently, resizing the window, dragging it to a different monitor, or changing the window mode causes an immediate crash.
I do not know if this is to be blamed on upgrading Wine to 1.7.11 or the patch. Investigation shall continue. |

Hi,
I am extremely satisfied with running game in Wine - on late 2013 rMBP with Nvidia discrete graphics it changed from unstable 20 FPS on mid detail and running very hot (100C) to stable 30 FPS on max details at around 70C.
Also UI feels VERY responsive in contrary to what I experienced with Cider version - no more drag lagging and browsing Market and ISIS is much faster overall. Also, swapping windows by Command-Tab is instant.
That being said I have some really minor issues:
- Problems with receiving Ctrl-F# keybindings
- Not working Alt key (CMD instead forks like alt)
- Cannot make it work with Mumble overlay (which I was using)
Not game-changing by any means but if someones stumbles upon solution to any of above let me know. |

Has anyone tried this on a mac with the "black screen"-problem in EVE? I am currently unable to login to eve on my mac, at all. Would be great if running it with wine would fix the problem. Has anyone tried? |

I was hoping someone could update the thread with this. I don't want to have to bootcamp my mac with windows if I can help it just for eve. |

I have install wine (using homebrew) and it mostly works. I had black screen twice (that I could force quit out) and twice I had a flickering screen (and had to reboot). But those are exceptions.
In addition to the problems mentioned in the thread, I got the following issues:
- I can't switch windows mode. - I can't change the shador quality setting.
In both cases, it crashes if I try.
Dual boxing was too laggy with shader quality set to high, I had to edit ".wine/drive_c/users/dinoboff/Local\ Settings/Application\ Data/CCP/EVE/c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility/settings/core_public__.yaml" to get it to low.
All in all, it feels more stable and most of the time, the character selection screen works. |

Can anyone write up a quick guide on how to install the Eve client through Wine for those of who are technologically challenged? I just resubbed yesterday and ran headfirst into the ****** up Mac client so it'd be awesome fi I could figure out a way to play without worrying about it. |

I followed Norden Kor instruction:
Norden Kor wrote:Since reading this post, I have had nothing but tremendous success using the standard Windows EVE client under wine-devel 1.7.9 for several weeks. I have two clients running simultaneously on my 2013 model iMac with Mavericks and couldn't be happier. Far more stable and much better framerate than the Cider client, which is simultaneously pleasant and troubling. If vanilla wine can do this so well, why is the official Mac client lagging so far behind? Noteworthy setup:
- Installed wine using Homebrew with the following:
- brew install wine --devel
- brew install winetricks
- winetricks gdiplus corefonts tahoma ie8 comctl32 dotnet40 vcrun2010
Installed standard Windows EVE Online client using regular network installer (not the offline installer) Use a one-line bash script sitting on my Desktop I double-click to launch the client: . ~/.bash_profile && wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe Login, launch game, switch account, launch game again, and away I go with two accounts
To install EVE with wine, you download the window install and then run it with wine, something like `wine ~/Downloads/EVE_Online_Installer_714680.exe` |

Had to turn to this solution since the official mac client is completely ****** up. Now that I've done it, I think I'll probably stay with it, since the Cider wrapper is such a piece of ****, I'm getting way better performance out of this, especially with multiple accounts running. Not a crash yet.
By the way, nvidia users should install physx as well.
winetricks physx

Ok, nevermind, I found a tutorial on how to install wine, but when i get to the part, where i want to start the offline installer of eve I bump into the following error code in the Terminal:

after that the windows program installer opens, I can click "continue" and "Agree" but after that the agree button is stuck and nothing else happens... anyone knows why this is happening and how to get the install running?

I'm glad to see plenty of folks have taken up the cause for vanilla WINE; it just seems so much superior to the cider implementation. I was worried that my hectic RL would leave this as a "well, it could be cool"...but everyone taking up the cause, cheers from me. |

Would you be willing to go back to the OP message, and edit it with all the updated information. Plus the step by step guide you used to install wine and EVE. As well as they way to create sub-eves for alt accounts. etc.
As it is right now. All the information is scattered between like 4-6 different blocks! xoxo Amarisen Gream

There is no user-friendly or quick approach to installing vanilla Wine or its dependencies on OS X. There are many places things can go wrong and a moderate amount of technical aptitude to troubleshoot and resolve problems without assistance is required.
If you are up to the challenge and want to try it anyway, here's how I have arrived at my current working installation:
- Install Xcode from the App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/xcode/id497799835?mt=12
- Open Xcode. If you are prompted to install additional required components, click Install.
- Install XQuartz: http://xquartz.macosforge.org/
- Install Homebrew: http://brew.sh/
- After Homebrew is installed, run the command `brew doctor`. Look over all of the potential problems and resolve them. (Note: It is highly unlikely that anyone in this forum will be able to help you with issues shown by this command, but you will need to fix them)
- Run the following command to install wine and its dependencies: `brew install --devel --universal wine winetricks`
- Run the following command to install dependencies required by EVE: `winetricks comctl32 corefonts dotnet40 eufonts gdiplus gdiplus_winxp ie8 msls31 physx pngfilt tahoma vcrun2010 wininet wsh56vb xmllite` (Note: Some of the error messages you will receive while installing the various requirements can be safely ignored.)
- Download the Windows EVE client network installer: http://community.eveonline.com/support/download/
- Run `wine /path/to/the/installer.exe` to launch the installer and begin download and installation of the game client.
- Run `wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe` to start the EVE launcher.
Depending on your Mac and your Internet connection, all of this will require somewhere around 1-4 hours of your time for download, compilation, and installation. If you have any questions or problems, you can try sending me an EVE Mail but be warned that most of the issues you will face will be things I can't help you with.
On the plus side, trying the above and not getting a working EVE client will do no damage to your system at all. Having Xcode and Homebrew installed are things that can be helpful down the road regardless. |

For those folks running into flickering issues, I was able to resolve this by setting Interval Immediate. I am not sure what to do about a fully black screen, though. |

Oh man it plays HEAPS better than the Mac client. Even Fullscreen 1440x900 although I have always dropped the settings down for more RAM.

I installed wine 1.7.11 from MacPorts and winetricks with gdiplus corefonts tahoma ie8 comctl32 dotnet40 vcrun2010.
The cider client on Rubicon 1.1.1 will generate from 60 fps to 74 fps when ship spinning at 1920 x 1080 and interval immediate. Absolutely same experience for me with MacBook Pro with a 1GB GeForce GT 650M. Surprisingly, game runs fine on Mac Book Air (Intel HD 4000) So I believe that glitching has something to do with wine+Nvidia drivers for OS X. Will investigate further. Nope because my MBP uses ATI Radeon and I had the issue. |

Right, once you've got it installed accordingly you can enter this line into AppleScript editor:
do shell script "/usr/local/bin/wine '/users/(your username)/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe'"
Change (your username) to your actual username which can be seen at the Terminal prompt.
Save it as an Application and when you run it it will just load. The best thing is that it won't display a Terminal window but you will end up with three Dock icons. |

Oh that's right... I'm not running a crappy client anymore.
I cannot believe how much of a difference this has made. I've been playing for 2 hours with default settings without dropping to lower performance to save fans spinning up which they inevitably did anyway, and I'm running full resolution full screen.
Not once has my fans kicked in. That is amazing. |

Nice to see that Wine works for you guys, really nice to see.
The optimal solution here would be that CCP would start to sponsor wine project or / crossover and also fix bugs that occur there since fixing it on wine is fixing it on both MAC and Linux users.
As of wine versions for performance use 1.7.12 and later since these seem to have the latest updates to Command Stream patches making it use more cores than one thus giving a nice boost.
For information follow the winehq: http://www.winehq.org/ Donate to the project or crossover games where most devs works at. Remember to bug-report issues to wine's bugtracker, no else but the players playing the game can really report on issues.
Edit:
Issue where the client crashes when resizing and / or changeing options should be fixed in latest wine. Issue where the client crashes on CQ is an issue that probably cannot be fixed by wine devs.
State of DX10/11 Wine has taken the first few steps into this world but it will take some time before it will be ready, but at least there is getting some progress on that. Features & Ideas Tag shortcuts - Make an FC enjoy his position more! Overview - Show fleet members only! |
