I am trying to track down a possible hidden complex in space and I seem to be having a spot of bother.
I am in a system and I can see deadspace rats and structures using the range scanner. In fact I have got to within 50 mill km which is about 1/3 AU (btw type "50000000km in au" in google and you get conversions instantly). It is a hidden deadspace complex as far as I can tell as if you highlight rats they do not show up as mission drones.
My problem comes when i launch my probes to get closer. I launch my 3 probes, scan for cosmic signatures, and get nothing . In fact I have got nothing many times now and I dont know where I am going wrong.
I have tried lauching 3 probes in 1 place, or 3 around the approx location at moons atc. I have tried larger probes up to the 192 au probes. I have tried cosmic signatures and I have tried to scan for the rats directly. All with out success.
Any help would be appreciated

OK nobody is replying so either they dont know of the problem or cant help.
I have however just dropped 3 X 48AU probes. Its a small system which is less than 48au across so these probes give me full coverage.
I have scanned for BS, cruiser, frigate, destroyer, elite versions of same, and cosmic structures. I am not even picking up the other pilots in the system, so what am I doing wrong? Any guesses what may be happening here?
I have used probes when they where first new and although they where dificult to use I am sure I found at least something

Only Observator probes work in true 3D. Try with one of these first.

You can¦t scan for npc, only cosmic signatures, stations and player ships.
The probes scan a cylinder with 1 au thickness, except the deepspace one. Try to find out if the deadspace you are looking for is in-plane.
Or maybe it¦s only a mission deadspace and they don¦t have cosmic signatures. Try to find the hidden beacon in te scanner, it should have something like cosmic signature in its name.

Also note that the jump gate is not likely to be extremly close to your rats. So getting close to the rats and using the 3AU probes to scan for the gate is not foolproof.

Observator probes it is then - Ill try that tomorrow thanks folks - Im off to the pub now
p.s. I am pretty sure It is not part of a deadspace mission. I have it from 2 different sources that there is a hidden base in this system, and a right click on the list of rats from the range scanner does not show them as mission drones. I think there is a difference here. I am confused as to how I dont see the other players in this system though.

Just for the case your sources are not other players who actually found the deadspace themselves: There are some complexe dbs around that contain false entries...
Zrakor posted about hidden complexes four month ago and he said all of them are connectd to missions/agents Post 11. So it¦s not adviseable to look for these things randomly...

Also even though you scan at ships it doesnt work sometimes.
It seems that scan probes only works on plain levels. If the target is above or below it takes some skills to align it the right way in order to find it.

You can set the plane of scanning with the three probes. You are the one setting the plane the probes are scanning in. Though I suspect that each drone is just scanning its own cyclinder, and not the whole area they're supposed to scan.
They're a bit tricky to use and you have to practice quite a bit to get good results. But you can make them usefull when you add in a little old style ship scanning work. --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. yeah - but its difficult to make good old scanning when using the 192au probes.
1) You have to launch observer probe and get within 92 au from something.
2) Then you have to launch 192au and its almost impossible to make sure that they are within the right height (at the right level)
Some systems are not bad others are impossible to scan with.
Not even when launching 10 of the deep probes (that should triangulate the location) you can find anything.

If he is 1/3 au away he is in the right plane. Try to get some triangulation going, not dropping all at the same spot. Sometimes it it needed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

out of interest, how long would it take to fly 1au if you were travelling at 4.2km/s constantly?

As 1AU = 150,000,000km (as above), 150,000,000/4.2 = 35,714,285s.
Which is exactly 1 year, 48 days, 8 hours, 38 minutes and 5 seconds. Assuming it's not a leap year of course ---------

Boy, will you be disappointed when you realise the complex is onl; there because the boss's tag is used in a navy battleship offer that nobody takes. There are crap bounties, crap loot, no faction or special complex stuff and nothing of interest at all in the hiden complexes. Unless it's in a COSMOS constellation. In that case, there'll be some other crap related to a mission.
I really hope they do something decent with hidden complexes. Right now, they're all linked to missions and they're all static (and therefore have to give ****ty loot). Disappointing.

Probes are borked, even the 1 au cilinder isnt foolproof... so many times have I scanned a battleship from 0,3au and got "Nothing found".
