I guess it comes down to wether you like missiles or hybrid weapons more. The Astarte is definatly way cooler though, and I've heard you can get Blasterthron like damage with a full rack of Heavy Neutron Blaster II's.

flown neither, but only hear good things about gallente one while ppl ***** about the caldari ones
if i'd have to make the choice and equal skills in gunnery and missiles i'd go for astarte, according to its stats it should be quite a monster

In my opinion the Astrate is the sexiest ship in the game. Blasterthron dps that is fully capable of hitting cruisers with ease. This ship is going to make the HAC pilots scream for a nerf. Ship also has an insane tank with 2x MARIIs, can't wait to get my hands on one .

Go for the Astarte!
The Nighthawk is easily the worst of all 4 Field Command Ships.
I have fought an Absolution, a Sleipnir and an Astarte in my Nighthawk, and I have no fitting at all that can beat them. Not even remotely.
Even with the heaviest pure shield tank I could muster, a lightly tanked Sleipnir ate me up without so much as a slight problem. I barely scraped his shields to 50% before my armour was nearly gone. And my skills are very high.
Also, the DPS is extremely lacking:
6x Heavy Launchers II's are great, but a lack of a ROF bonus means that even with 3x BCU II's I still only get a 6.7sec ROF, which is absolutely appaling. This is actually less damage than a Cerberus can do.
The Nighthawk also lacks a missile velocity and flight time bonus, meaing it is an ineffective long-range fighter.
Combine this with its pathetic powergrid and rediculous "7th" high slot and you have a ship that is completely lacking.
Now, many people say "Oh, but its a frig killer" - I simply say this:
With a ROF of 7 seconds, coupled with the fact that one volley of any missile type wont pop a single T2 frig, you must wait for a second volley, meaning 14 seconds is dedicated to killing one frig. Near 30 seconds for two frigs. I find that almost any other ship can kill frigates faster than this. The Nighthawk is NOT an effective frigate killer. Not even remotely.
(I have discounted the Nighthawks effectiveness versus T1 frigs, because any ship bigger than a destroyer can pretty much pop a T1 frig in a few seconds. The nighthawk would still probably need 14...)
So all in all, the Nighthawk is completely crap, unbalanced and in need of significant boosting.
Dev Response please!!!!!!!!!!!

Replace the Nighthawk's Target Nav bonus with a ROF bonus!

Edited by: Techyon on 17/03/2006 23:41:17 The Astarte is able to put out damage that exceeds 1000 DPS with a full rack of Ion II's and drones. Which means that you can fit a mwd, med cap booster, 2x MAR II, and more.
Making it an insane damage platform within 10k and quite a nice tank to top that.
this however doesn't utilize its gang support abilities... although an Eos would be preferable for that anyway... ------
