So, today I was thinking about how to explain New Eden to other mmo players, and this is what I came up with.
Other MMO: Give a group of kids sticks, tell them where the pinata is, and that it has enough loot in it to make everyone happy. Watch them go cooperate and break the pinata.
EVE: Give a group of kids sticks and tell them that somewhere in the neighborhood there is a pinata with just enough loot for one of them. Don't tell them what it is or looks like, or even that the pinata could be another kid. Just tell them everything is fair game. Watch as they beat each other, the ground, the trees, the cars, and some old ladys dog half to death before realizing that there was only a 50% chance that there even was a pinata to start with.
God I love this game. |

Add this:
At least fifty percent of you will get hit by cars or shot in drivebys
Twenty five percent will get killed in suicide bomb attacks
Fifteen percent will be eaten by flesh craving insects from beyond time
Eight percent will be shot by the police
One point five percent will get killed by other members of the group
Point 4 percent will die mysteriously in their sleep
point one percent will become MORE POWERFUL THAN A GOD *** Vote MTU For CSM *** "They feel the need to cover their ears and eyes in horror at your very presence." --áPontianak Sythaeryn Omnis nomiom nom nom nomi |

I think this too over-complicated. BLOWING UP SPACESHIPS. That is all.
You certainly wouldn't tell them about the awesomeness of mining. Imagine an Eve promotional video that just showed a guy or a group of guys mining for the 60s of the spot. Maybe have some rats show up and get killed by drones.
That would certainly get the people flocking to play. Wouldn't it?

Funny thing there are thousands - maybe ten's of thousands - of us that spend most of our EvE time doing this. Where do you think all those ships you blow up come from?
So I'd add "unlike other MMO's the crafting and financial system is realistically complex and actually impacts the game. In fact the financial and crafting mechanics and their skillful use has greater impact on EvE than any ship(s) you blow up. |

Sometimes he hits the mark, but there's a reason he sticks with 1P stuff; it's easier to play through and pick apart. EVE is often described by gamers as "the one game I always really liked but never tried", and there's a good reason for that. Once you get into the gritty details of time training, fleet compositions, politics, fittings, doctrines, and all that noise, it's a turnoff for the gamer looking for a quick thrill as opposed to a focus title.
I have always preferred focus titles, and that's why I'm here. |

To describe EVE to a non or new player you have to bring the sandbox comparison into it.
EVE is a sandbox, as a new player you'll start out in the middle of the sandbox, if you stray too far from the middle you will run into the bully's area of the sand box and he/she will protect their area of the sandbox by beating you about the head and neck with a large stick until you wake up safe and sound back in the middle of the sandbox. You will need to group up with others to protect yourselves and what you currently have. If you wish to be the bully you simply need to bring more friends than he has and take his area from him. His area has better sand and much better toys. Your new friends will eventually abandoned and betray you and you'll wake up back in the middle of the sandbox to start all over again.

"Traditional" MMO games are like theme parks: A nice, sculpted space with clear signage leading to the various designated rides, attractions (or quests and dungeons), and other elements of fun. You can choose which rides to go on, what food stalls to eat at, and so on. Then when you've seen everything, you can do it again, or come back another day (make a new character) and take a new path, or try the new rides if they've put in any. Play outside of the special rides and attractions is certainly possible, but it's not encouraged, and it might be frowned upon by the park employees.
EVE, on the other hand, is like a sandbox: There's a clear boundary within which the sand belongs, but nobody is going to yell at you for spilling it here and there, provided you're not putting it in your pocket and taking it home with you. Because if everyone did that, there would be no sand left. There are tools such as buckets and shovels at your disposal, but what you build and how you build it is entirely up to you. You make your own fun. If someone trips over or kicks your sand castle, tough luck. There's also a swing set and a see-saw (things like missions, anoms, etc.), and you're welcome to use them, but they're just meant to go up and down, not provide the limitless outlet for creativity like the tools and the sand. Do YOU like to undock? |

Easy.
EVE is a game about internet spaceships where everyone gets to be the real douche bag they truly are, but aren't because they fear society's repercussions. "Entitlement" is a euphemism for "I hate the way you play and it makes me cry like a baby". If you fantasize about being immoral it means you enjoy being immoral deep down.
