He paid me back the small loan I made earlier to him (organised in the minerbumping channel) and actually gave me a few ideas for new ways to profit from the blowing up of highsec mining barges.
I'd trust him more than most EVE players and if I had the liquidity I would have considered this. (I have all my capital tied up in t2 production at the moment, including the ISK I borrowed from you)
But of course, if you smell a rat, stay out of it. Maybe you are right and TJ has me fooled, we shall see. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. I certainly wouldn't go so far as to say I smell a rat and investments are often entirely different propositions from an information perspective for those who have other contacts with the borrower and, thus, more and better data. Indeed, I have no reason at all to suspect a premeditated scam.
That being said, however, there are many more dangers in the investment market than just people who set out to scam. I would estimate that probably something approaching half of the historical defaults on MD have been down to people who didn't initially intend to scam either burning out or just deciding that they have no real need to honour their debts any more or taking other actions that are detrimental to their investors. I have found that somewhat reliable indicators of increased likelihood of such things happening can be gleaned from the way in which borrowers interact with their investors and potential investors. Such indicators obviously don't always lead to defaults but borrowers who say one thing and then do another are signifying at least some degree of unreliability.
Refusal to engage with questions and blanking questioners is also a bad sign; it may look fine until someone who actually invests starts getting the same treatment but it also shows a lack of commitment to transparent dealings and a potential unwillingness or inability to deal with difficult situations (which is not something you really look for in an ideal investment, since things frequently do go wrong to a greater or lesser extent). The lack of commitment to transparency is also evident here in pursuing most negotiations off the board and away from public scrutiny. This last point is really the fault of the investors, though, as they are setting up an environment that makes them, and any one else involved with TearJar far more vulnerable than they need to be in a way that benefits no-one other than the borrower. Historically, keeping negotiations off the forum has frequently provided a foundation for misrepresentation and dishonesty. To give just one example, a fairly well-known scam some years back quadrupled its take from the advertised borrowed amount simply by not rigorously logging who the lenders were in the thread and taking isk on the basis of ingame discussions, meaning dozens of investors thought they were filling the GÇÿlast available slotGÇÖ.
In general, there are two important things in investing: the nature of the borrower and the information available on the borrower. As an investor I can only ever come at the former through the latter, which means the representation may often not really match up with who the borrower really is. But having only these kinds of details to go on, TearJar is not representing himself as a particularly stable prospect. Which is a real shame as I was quite keen on investing in this one.

Tear Jar wrote:Hello Market Discussion, I am Tear Jar. I am an inter-regional trader. I do not claim to be a market genius, or to have invented some amazing way to triple my isk, as some others do here in MD. My methods produce consistent results, buying particular items in Jita. Then sell them off in another market hub. I have steadily increased my income as I have trained up my skills and I have increased my net worth at a fairly steady pace, but find myself hitting limitations on free capital. Hence this bond offering.
Bond Details - 4 Billion ISK total requested - 1 month offering, closing on 2/13/14, 10% interest payed out on the 13th of each month. - Option for investors to roll over investment into the next month. - Increments of 100 million isk please. - Cash out available at any time with 24 hours notice, cash out will be paid prorated interest rate for the time invested. - I reserve the right to close the bond with at least 24 hours notice to all investors, returning all invested isk and interest earned.
Why a Bond?
I have been running into free capital problems for a few weeks. I was hesitated to come to the MD community for a bond. I have seen people get flamed when asking for a bond, and while I hope to fill this bond, I will not get into a forum argument over it. Constructive criticism is always welcome! I am hoping to expand my trading to an additional hub. I have about 30 free market slots and could quickly train more if needed. I did try to expand to another hub a few weeks ago. However, I could not reliably keep that one supplied do to money constraints, so I went back to just one hub. This infusion of capital should allow me to reliably start stocking a second hub.
Where is Your Collateral (and other security concerns): My collateral is tied up in the market. It would be counterproductive to expanding my trade to offer this. I know it is a risk to come to MD looking for an uncollateralized bond offering. I have thought of a few ways to combat this:
- I am happy to share a limited API for JohnathanGalt and Lord Azori with any potential investor with concerns. This will show skills and assets that should at least prove I have been actively trading and I have sufficient assets to repay if needed. -I have considered submitting to an audit with Vaerah Vahrokha, and while her price is not unreasonable for the service provided, it cuts into the profits that would be generated by the additional capital a bit much for my tastes. -I currently have the NAV to pay this back if needed, just by liquidating everything on my market character. However, as I am not doing anything in the market that is super risky, I cannot imagine it coming to this. -I use Red Frog Freight to move almost all of my freight, mitigating the risk of a hauling gank. -All investors will receive biweekly updates, with screenshots from EVEPROFIT as evidence of work put in.
Please feel free to EVEmail me any questions or concerns, as this is the best way to reach me because I can check it constantly. Also please feel free to post in this thread if you wish to invest, with the amount you wish to invest, or with any questions. I look forward to working with all of you.

There's no reason you shouldn't have any liquid capital available if you have that much isk invested in trading . Your obviously not taking item turnaround time into account with your inventory, OR your consistently overbuying stock. Bring it in and get it out. Which brings me to the point of your collateral (your stock) if you can't move it how are we going to.
I keep a 3-4 bil inventory consistently at 1 hub and turnover at least 400 mil of product a day at a 15-25% profit margin and I think that sucks, but I always have capital and I'm always making isk. |

Well having isk tied up actually isn't an 'odd' thing there though. , wich is not to say that it isn't a good 'excuse' for someone who wants to go out on a scamfest.
Hell i struggle a LOT of times to have some liquid isk myself and i'm not handling a few B playmoney .

I apologize if I misspoke. I did not mean to say that I have no liquid capital. I do have a steady flow of isk and goods on hand. Where I run into capital limits is in shipping. To keep costs down, I keep my shipments to as close to the 1 billion isk limit that Red Frog Freight offers. Expanding to a second trade hub doubles the number of shipments I need to make. Hence, the loan. I certainly could ship less often or ship lower quantities. However, that would hurt my profits more than a 10% monthly bond payment.
I would also like to apologize to anyone who feels their questions have been ignored. |

LOL this has win written all over it, which is nice because so much of MD is essence of fail recently. I don't mind scammers, a good scam can leave behind a great story, but only for people who put the effort it. The youth of today "I know I'll just copy and paste someone else's scam" - where's the glorious tale in that? If you can't be arsed to put the effort in and do it properly don't do it at all.

Mine was not a scam. If you read through the thread, I ran the bond for over 8 months and paid out over 2.5 billion in interest. i believe the OP just searched for a successful bond and copied it because he knew it would look legit. Maybe his was a scam, and maybe it was not, but he clearly did not put in a ton of effort into setting it up.

Apologies I didn't mean to imply your thread was a scam, but clearly my post reads like that. That was unintentional and sloppy on my part. I also meant what I said in a wider sense, scammers seem so lazy these days, it's all copy and paste. The really good scammers that form the legend and lore of Eve actually put original effort in.
Again clearly your thread has nothing to do with scamming beyond being copied by a lazy scammer. |

The one question nobody was asking: "Who is John Galt?" It doesn't get much more ironic than that!
I noticed the name right away due to it's nature, but I just assumed it was an appropriate name for a trading alt (although I suppose invention might be a more suitable profession yet). Due to the nature of the person who would name their character something like that I thought of going for it based solely on the name- I mean, who would miss an opportunity to invest with John Galt!?! But fortunately I forgot about it. I could handle it if I got scammed by John Galt, but an imposter would have been a low blow.
Too bad the Little Urban Achievers lost money too, especially so soon after Brint died. Hopefully they didn't really invest and money and just gave this guy a ringer filled with whites. |
