Just out of curiousity, since I am hearing a lot about stealth bombers are useless and force recon ships are so expensive, does anyone actually uses cloaking devices on their ships frig/cruiser/BS?
Just because it is not nice, doesn't mean it is not miraculous. |

Yeah, lots of people use cloaks.
And stealth bombers aren't useless and recon ships really aren't THAT expensive. --- High quality pics of most EVE ships!

Sure, they are nice to get around, though it takes some cleverness. But if you're quick with it it can save your skin a couple of times. Also, it's a lot of fun cloaking a battleship at a low sec gate, wait until someone starts camping it, and then fly up to them and unstealth at 2km distance. The looks on their faces are hilarious! :) It takes an arseload of patience though.

yes.
check out the price on covert ops cloaks. And no, thats not just because one guy own most bpo's for them, there's demand to match that price.
Covert ops frigs are still essential parts of any pvp gang in Eve. Recons may be expensive, but that's because they're popular as hell. And lots of people fit prototype cloaks on haulers. BS, whatever for whatever reason (even only to annoy the hell out of hostiles that keep looking all voer the system for them not knowing they're cloaked and cant be found).
So, in short, hell yes. I wish i had a cloak bpo.

i could see someone doing this in a Gankraven, then having a corp/gang mate come through the gate and bait the camper into shooting. then its T2 torpedo time if its a battleship sniping the gate.

Can you just remain cloaked indefinitely? I don't see any activation cost or duration, just a reactivation delay. If you can stay cloaked as long as you want I assume you can't activate any other modules while cloaked. Can you move on impulse? And can you cloak while people are locked on to you?

I've never used a cloak myself, but, I have been told by others that as soon as someone has a lock on you, you can no longer cloak.

one thing that imo isnt clear is if the stealth bombers can use the covert ops cloak, or do they have to use a regular cloaking module?

You can stay cloaked as long as you like. You can also move while cloaked (although there's a huge speed penalty unless you meet certain requirements, i.e. using a covert ops cloaking device in a ship that can fit it, or when you're in a stealth bomber, which gets a special speed bonus while cloaked). You cannot activate modules while cloaked, and you cannot cloak while people are locked to you or even while they're locking you.

You can't use the covert ops cloaking device on stealth bombers. It takes 10,000 CPU to fit so you need a special bonus to fit it, and only proper covert ops frigates (Cheetah / Helios / Anathema / Buzzard) get that bonus. --- High quality pics of most EVE ships!

Stealth bombers don't have a bonus to reduce the CPU usage of the covert cloak, the covert ops frigs and force recons do, so the best cloak you can fit is the improved cloak II.

When you arrive from a jump cloaked, can you recloak with a cloaking device to escape a gatecamp?

You have to break your jump-in cloak before you can cloak with your fitted cloak, however with a bit of skill its possible to only be visible for about a second. Its not 100% secure and I don't think you can cloak within a warp bubble but you should be able to get away from most things.

You can cloak while someone is attempting a lock-on, from my experience. __________________ Inappropriate link description. --Jorauk mods - pwning sigs since 1943 |

I put a prototype cloak on my BS when I first moved to 0.0. It's fantastic for hiding when potential enemies enter your system, but it really gimps your targeting speed.
Cloaks may be good for sneaking up on someone to say "boo", but you're also giving them a lot of time to react while you wait for your guns to lock on.

If I have a spare high slot on my BS, I always fit one. Even if I don't have the CPU I fit one, just so that I don't have to warp between safespots when I'm camped/blobbed in.

yeah, you can cloak while someone is locking you, just not while you're locked. (i.e. when they are yellow on overview) ---

I have no wish to start an arguement however I do disagree. Cloaking is not overpowered and should not be nerfed. The whole covert advantage is that of stealth and high skill requirements. Just because you can't find and kill something doesnt mean that they deserve a nerf.
Imho if we nerf cloaking, the covert ops frigs should get a massive resistance bonus.

Cloaks are very useful in 0.0
And to be honest the recon ships aren't that expensive for what they can do

It's different when the cargo is worth 500mil. A cloak can and will save your ass when hauling. You can safespot and cloak if there's a camp nearby and outcamp the campers
