Exactly what is so wonderful about the Tengu? What is different about it than other strategic cruisers? The reason I ask is because my training plan currently calls for the Proteus, but I don't want to make a mistake. If the Tengu is just flat right out better than other T3's then I need to switch to it.
If somebody could do some sort of run down of the strengths and weaknesses of all the T3 cruisers or a link to some sort of guide, I would appreciate it. |

All t3 cruisers are only as good as your skills and what you are using it for. So to give specifics what do you plan on using your strategic cruiser for? Always willing to help all you have to do is ask, though if your in the other fleet I may not help the way you want. Just a heads up. |

Pre-nerf, the Tengu had the best damage projection and amazing tanking. There are still a lot of Tengu pilots around as a result, plus the Tengu is still pretty good.
CCP decided to balance all races, where previously they were racial counters to each other. Example: Caldari had long range superiority to counter Gallente short range superiority. Caldari also had a good resistance bonus to counter high Gallente damage when Caldari failed to control the engagement range. |

Because people love to perpetuate memes based on zero understanding of game mechanics, because that's for boring people. That is why people worship the Tengu.
Now onto your actual question; a T3 can be really good in a specific situation and decently ok in various others. The proteus is probably the least versatile of all the T3 and arguably the least useful, especially in pve. Also, don't be believe the hype about how T3 can kill people by the dozens, they only really do so when they have a massive advantage in regards to gang links, RR and uhm... player quality.
So, it really depends on what you want to be doing if a T3 would be logical at all and which one that would be, but as said; the answer will almost never be "Proteus". Having said all that, T3 rebalancing will happen shortly and I expect CCP to make them balanced and worthwhile. |

This was the best response so far. From what I can tell, the T3 ships have been balanced and are now more or less equal? Another person mentioned that the Proteus was the worst. Can anyone give me any current differences between the ships? |

T3 are to be rebalanced and no one knows what they'll make of it. Because of that I'd probably wait a bit and train up more support skills or other ships till we have a decent idea of which direction they want to take them. |

There will no doubt be another round of nerfs for the Tengu, this time directed specifically at all T3. CCP have pretty much stated so.
The previous nerfs were just general across-the-board to medium-sized (cruiser and battlecruiser) missile hulls, and all hulls with a resist bonus. However active shield boosting did get a buff, plus shield-tanking got a whole bunch of deadspace tanking modules.
Of the T3, the Legion is probably the only one that will come out ahead after a balancing round.

Tau Cabalander wrote:That would be the Navy Issue Drake. I suppose, if you configure it like a CND. I prefer to role it more like a force recon ship though, an alternative to the Falcon. Though rather than ECM, it gets a nice probe bonus (though you can still rig ECM's to it to meta tank). Then compared to the Falcon, it's harder to probe down. And a difference with the Tengu to others, it's a natural shield tank, so lows can be used to increase agility, which is good for this role.
But people want to hate on the Tengu and people that have use for them, they want a one all powerful ship for everything and roles be damned hehe. Me, I was just glad that finally CCP made something cruiser size like this, so I stick with it, and fly many other ships as well. imo WoW mentality, really...
But for those that need a certain job done, well there is a ship available for it.

Love my Tengus. Both my main characters fly them.
I'm actually surprised by your post though OP, all I ever hear is people trashing the Tengu, never worshiping it.
As the others said, a ship is a tool and it's effectiveness will depend on the situation, fit, your skills, your character's skills and more... There's a lot of ways to fit a Tengu out, so I don't think anyone could honestly say they are **** or great across the board. I personally just like shield tanking and missiles, and my characters themselves well they're Caldari patriots so...
But just quietly, I have an alt who flies Proteus and I actually 'enjoy' flying that more than my Tengu. Feel for confident in it (possibly partly due to it costing half as much lol) for some reason. Yeah you loose the subs, but then a well fit T2 frig can be a more costly loss. GÇö+¬GÇö |

Then let me chirp in with a more specific example: Exploration in dangerous places. The T3's seem to be the best option for this, but which of them is "better" at it? I'm able to fly a Loki reasonably well on my main at the moment, but I still hear that the Tengu is preferred.

The Tengu's been preferred by many fliers in PVE because of its standoff ability; with heavily bonused missiles, even after the heavy-missile nerf, it doesn't have to factor in transversal or falloff issues. Either a target's in range or it isn't, and if it is, the Tengu can hit it hard.
And the Tengu's popularity has probably led to a lot more theorycrafting; people look for new and interesting things to do with ships they're familiar with, which is how you get things like Tengus with 100MN afterburners, HAM Tengus, and stuff like that. I've always appreciated the Tengu for its ability to active tank a tremendous amount of DPS. I don't like trying to fight them unless I've got neuts on my side. I know violence isn't the answer. I got it wrong on purpose. |

It's worshipped because it was once so insanely good that a lot more people have good Tengu skills than have good skills in potentially competing ships like the Loki or the Deimos.
Because the post-nerf Tengu is still pretty strong, and so many people are skilled into it, it still performs well enough to be many a player's favorite ship. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. I guess I have my question more or less answered. Some people asked what I planned to do with it. My answer is that I thought the point of a strategic cruiser was that you built it out according to what you were doing. In other words, it could fill many different roles if you built it differently. I would be using it for exploration, dangerous scouting and logistic missions and maybe pvp. |

I think I own something like 8 Tengus.
* Two (three?) mission fit. * Two remote rep with passive resists fit, for C5 & C6 w-space sites. * Two probing fit. * Two travel fit.
I think the only other T3 I have at the moment are two Legions.
CCP has suggested they plan to make T3 more re-fittable, example: possibly allowing rigs to be removed intact. Right now rigs on T3 are rather limiting. |
