Hey whats up guys? I had a question about something. I know this game has a lot to do with specialization considering skills are learned in real time, but my question can you have two careers or is it advisable not to.
Right now I've been training to completely master my Rifter and just pretty much being a good frigate fighter, but also want to get into being a in station Trader. So I made an alt for Trading but the problem is... unless I get PLEX... it's pointless to have an alt for me to learn anything because I'm so focused on one character right now with skills that take days or months to complete.
Would you say its okay to have a skill in combat and another one that helps you make ISK like mining or trading or should you just stick to one? |

Yes you can diversify on one character, the basic trade skills don't take long to train and will only eat into a small part of your training time. Time spent training the basics of a career path are never wasted, because you can upgrade them when you have the time or inclination. You can choose to have specialist alts at a later stage, even then the basic trade skills are handy for buying and selling stuff on any character.
Most people can do multiple things with one character, many mission runners will also do exploration and trading on their missioning character. |

Awesome. Thank god. I don't know if I have the patience to work on two characters. |

Most players will get "off-career" skills on their main eventually.
Whether it's better to use a 2nd character or your main, consider:
1) Whether you train trade skills on your main or your alt, in both cases you have to stop training combat skills on your main.
2) More skill points means a more expensive medical clone - if you get into a career where you lose your pod often (i.e. PvP in null-sec or wormholes), it might be cheaper to train those secondary professions on an alt.
3) Your main is where he is, while an alt can be elsewhere. This is IMO the most important difference. E.g. refining skills - if you run missions, you will loot a lot of garbage and it's nice to be able to refine that where your main is. So it makes sense to train refining skills on your main if you do missions. If you want to station trade, it's good to be at some trade hub, so you'd want to have an alt for that who's sitting in that trade hub. OTOH if you want to sell the loot you collected from combat, you'd want trade skills on your main. For production, you want to be where your blueprints are, so an alt is better. Etc
But when you're starting out, I'd focus on one career. Or start a couple of alts to see what career you like best. Remember that if you buddy invite yourself you get 51 days of play time almost for free. (It's not entirely free, because you get 51 days on the alt + 30 days on your main for ~15$, while otherwise you can get 30 days on your main for 11$ with a 12 months subscription.) |

There is nothing stopping you from being a jack-of-all-trades, it just takes longer to get good at everything.
Example: I'm primarily an industrialist, but also a jack-of-all-trades. After 5 years, I can pilot nearly every ship in EVE, and I'm training towards the last few, though it doesn't take long to pilot the vast majority.
The choice of whether to specialize or generalize is always up to you, and you can change your mind. |

It takes some more time but you dont have to be "maxed" in everything to be efficient in the professions you want to try/do.
I only have one character (this one) and i am able to do everything i want to do without having to worry about it. But as others have said, certain professions dont take that long to skill to the point you need. Trading, mining, hauling and industry are all professions that (when you look at the big picture) dont take as much time to "max out", as other professions. Don't underestimate this. Station trading takes a lot of maintenance, updating orders several times a day. Without remote trade skills (and even with them if you leave the region) you will have to return to the trade hub to do this. Flying back and forth to whatever else you are doing with your main tends to get old quite fast.
In most cases I would not advocate pausing your training queue on your main character. However, you can make a decent station trading alt with just a few hours of training (all you really NEED is additional buy/sell orders slots). Then you can go back to your main and never worry about training your alt again. The time you lose on your main is made up in reduced frustration by not having to fly back and forth to the trade hub several times a day.
One other reason I like having a separate character - when trading you tend to get a lot of your ISK tied up in assets and it can be difficult to judge how much you're making, ESPECIALLY if you are also buying ships and mods for personal use out of the same pool. Make an alt, give 'em a bit of start up cash, then multiply it and give it back to your main for fun and activities.

That is actually very good advice. I already have that alt made and with some trading skills already trained so it doesn't hurt to do that. Thanks for the tip! |

This game is mostly about patience, better work on that.

As for what I can do on this character:
- Excellent skills for Gallente cruisers, including all types of tech 2 ones - Excellent skills for Gallente destroyers - Solid skills for Gallente battleships (seldom used, not skilled into Marauders) - Tech 2 production including all subcapital ships other than a couple (an off-account alt can build those) - Acceptable trading skills (my off-account alt has better)
What I can't do
- Capital ship pilot - Tech 3 cruiser pilot - Use weapons systems other than railguns, blasters and drones
In short you can diversify, and the skillpoint system helps with this. It's ~460% more training time to get to level 5 than it is to get to level 4, so in a given timeframe, you can get 5 skills to level 5, or 28 to level 4. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. ...and of course having a PvP/trader character is always problematic due to sec standing.
Takes a month or so to build a decent casual trade character alt - more like a week for someone to sell your ore/loot. |

Thank you all for the advice. Yeah I think I'm just going to go with an alt to be quite frank. I'll put my main on hold and fund my alt with my main for his skill books as a In Station Trader. Who knows maybe I'll even bite the bullet and get PLEX to do it. |

I'm going to plex an alt for trade and/or Indy soon I think. Once you get up to where skills take actual time (weeks instead of days) you just simply don't want to throw a week into a secondary skill.
That said, taking many low level trade and social skills to 3 or so will benefit everyone, more or less. For example, stuff like Security Connections is great for PvE pilots. |

PS- You might want to reconsider rifters. Once upon a time they were the best frigate, but with the rebalance they became middle of the road. That said they are good at a lot of things which is good for a new pilot. But flying them tends say I don't know what I'm doing.
