I am relatively new, (1 month old) and perhaps this has already been suggested before.
I was wondering if ship painting or ship design modifications have ever been discussed by the devs as future possibilities. Here are my ideas.
The implementation would be something like the way SWG does their image designer. User would contact the painter or designer (in station)with the appropriate skills and make the changes requested. In the Gui a preview/trade window would pop up of the changes that this person was skilled to make before accept button was applied. This would be accepted by both parties so the trade of isk or goods would go through as well.
For painters, these skills would be under social. (gives a boost to social as well charisma) Skill ideas would be the following:
Primary: Charisma Secondary: Memory
Basic Painting Rank 1 This skill allows you to paint basic colors to entire ship. Each level and you learn a new color. 1 light blue, 2, light red, 3 light green, 4 brown 5 orange.
Advanced Coloring Art Rank 2 (Req: Basic painting lvl 5) This skill allows you to learn advanced colors to entire ship. Each level and you learn a new color. 1. Dark Blue 2. Maroon 3. Yellow 4. Charcoal 5 Royal Purple
Collage Rank 3 (Req: Advanced Coloring Art lvl 4) This skill allows you to combine more then 1 color on a ship. Each level will add 1 color. Max 5 colors on a ship.
Exterior Design Rank 4 (Req Collage lvl 4) This skill allows the painter to add patterns, lines, symbols, decals and corp. logos to their work. Each level will add more options.
Miners, I have not forgotten about you. Some new advanced minerals will be introduced that will have colors extracted from them when refined. For basic painting Example Azure Plagioclase can be used to refine an additional blue ore which will be used for light blue. For advanced colors new minerals will be used and will require new advanced industrial mining skills to mine them. Yes, you will make tons of money mining Ancient Purple Puroxynes in 0.0!
For design changes this needs to be fleshed out more such as if it should be doable at manufacturing only (like ordering a custom job) or as a modification afterwards (like a body shop similar to painting). The skills would be located in science and engineering.
Primary Intelligence Secondary Charisma
Basic Body Work rank 1 Front End Design rank 2 Wing Enhancements rank 2 Etc
You guys get the ideaà Anyhow, I would like to painting be looked at by the devs as an initial possibility. Feel free to flesh out the ideas, I would like to hear your feedback.
thks

the idea is ok - but your design for skills are poor imo and the idea about changing ores would be pointless imo --------------------

i think it would be really cool to have a paint job 'blueprint' that you use to paint your ships and it requires certain amounts of paint/minerals whatever. could open up a new mini-profession of designing stuff

This would be nice if they could put it in without causeing too mutch lag. Even if we could get our corp logo to show up on the outside of the ship would be nice.

To all ya'll who dis this idea for 'load' or 'lag', you need to think outside the box.
It could easily be added as something you could enable in your client and uses a whole different set of servers to send you the details of the other ship. It could even be done like our icons are done, and generated by your client when you want to see the details.
Little option in your 'general' preferences tab to 'show/hide customized ship skins' would do it.
If its on, your client/computer can make a request to the 'skin servers' and get the programmed skin for a certain ship. That skin doesn't have to a custom texture map, but just some simple instructions on the direction or light or the application of an existing decay (corp logo, item icon, character portrait), etc, etc.
Done right, it could be completely transparent to the game itself and add a lot of value for those of us who like form more than function.

Its easy to 'think outside the box' when you throw a ton of money on it. Sure having another set of servers would cause less strain on whatever database your ship information is stored. Why stop there? Why not have a completely seperate connection made to a completely different centre to make sure it doesn't even put network load on the game? Don't get me wrong I think more customization would be great, I used to love that aspect of SWG, I'd spend tons of time trying to find the outfits I was looking for. However it might not fit the EVE coding too well since there doesn't seem to be any indication it was planned for in the future.

I blame that darned Icelandic logic. It gives us GREAT game functionality, but not so much varied prettiness.

I would love to get paint jobs implimented and making skills for it would definatly add some fun to the game. I'd even go as far as to trade our avatars for this functionality
