Alright, so this is just a thread to warn other new players that this can happen.
Since playing, I was informed of four rules for EVE Online: 1. Don't trust anyone. 2. Don't fly what you can't afford to lose. 3. If it undocks, it dies. 4. Never fly solo.
Now, this happened to me:
I was flying a Kestrel in low-sec (0.3/0.2 mainly). I'm looking for people flagged so I can engage them without worrying about CONCORD. I spot a flagged Comorant so I fly in to engage, I lock my target and begin to open fire. A few seconds later, five or six ships enter the fray, helping the Comorant. I lost my Kestrel, no big deal. Then, they lock onto my pod but don't fire. They say they'll let me go for 1mil ISK. I pay it since I had it and...they destroy my pod anyway before I could warp to the nearest Jumpgate.
So yeah, to other new players, don't trust anyone who says they'll let your pod go for money. They will destroy you anyway. |

Why would you pay to save a worthless clone?

I had upgraded my clone without really thinking about the consequences (I think I paid around 6mil ISK for the clone), I did have one implant and my clone was 19 jumps from the area of space I was in when I was pod-killed. |

I don't trust people that ask for such a small ransom.
The ones that ask for a larger ransom - say 50m - I would respond to by saying "Accepted, conditional on a Google search not showing you dishonoring any ransoms within the next 60 sec". But the ones that ask for 1m or 10m are just looking for something to laugh about.
My favorite EVE rule is: "Don't trust anyone in game unless you are sleeping with them IRL".

That sounds like a really naive thing to do.

Concord only operate in 0.5 to 1.0 space, they're too scared to venture anywhere else.

Report the names of the Pirates that did this in the "Crimes and Punishment" forum subsection. Link your ship and pod loss (should be on zkillboard or EvE kill), and ignore any troll remarks asking for proof.
You won't get any vengeance or retribution, but it will let people know how much to trust them (should they do a forum search). |

A little additional info on this... there are a number of pirate corps that will release your pod for a ransom. For example, in our alliance not honoring a ransom can get you kicked. Just depends on the group, but unless you're in an expensive pod, it generally isn't worth paying. |

In my experience most people honor a ransom. Simply because if they do not, the population of Eve as a whole becomes less likely to pay ransoms in the future.
I personally prefer to be paid a ransom over a killmail whenever possible. Although usually the fight isn't so one sided that I can idly sit by and start up a conversation while they're still trying to hammer me with ordinance.

Funny how this works...
ironically I broke rules 2 and 3 on Monday and thought I could get away with moving 400 million isk worth of ships and modules to jita in a mammoth... thankfully a kind person in a vexor showed me the error of my ways and liberated me of my loot about 3 jumps from jita... I learned something (don't be a lazy noob) and the vexor pilot got a pay-day XD
Now I am sitting with only a few million isk in my wallet and a nice loss to reflect on as I go forward in my eve career. |

I'd ask 50m because they could be the alt of an established player, who would likely fit in five +4s (~105m). If they say no, that's fine - if I believed they were new I'd let them off with a warning. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=318489 - Proposal for a new type of tech 2 Destroyer If you want to mine in highsec, read www.minerbumping.com. |

Depends on who you are caught by. When I was in a low sec pirate corp, one of the very few rules we had was to honor ransoms.
Ransoming is often more of an RP choice than for the money. You're a pirate...doing pirate things. |
